- This year I did better growing potatoes in grow bags than I did growing them in the ground. I grew 3 types of potatoes, Purple Majesty, Red Pontiac, and Kennebec. In this video, I'll show you the harvest of one 10 gallon grow bag with Purple Majesty potatoes. We were very happy with what we got from such a small space. Let us know if you've ever grown Purple Majesty potatoes. Thanks for watching!

That sure is quite the harvest for three seed potatoes. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Katie! We were happy with what we got.
Beautiful,
Thank you!
We grew purple majesty for the first time this year and we were very pleased. From 5 plants we got 24 lbs...each plant gave us between 25 and 32 potatoes. We also tried amarosa for the first time and were very impressed with the production.
Thanks for sharing that. Glad they worked so well for you!
Never grew these but they sure look good. Stay safe and have a great week!
Thanks! Yep, they were good. Have a great week!
I've grown purple majesty potatoes very successfully the first time in an old recycling bin. I was having great success growing them in a garbage bag next, but had to unexpectedly go out of town and that was that! They turn grayish when boiled, but retain the beautiful purple color when roasted.
Thanks for sharing your experience with growing them, Adair! Much appreciated! Sounds like they did very well for you.
When we make our homemade Garlic Mashed potatoes I love that it turns grey I pretend it's "the Grey stuff" from beauty and the beast 😂
I bought some roadside in Maine while working there twice on the border. Never knew the name. Grew them twice. Best home fries on earth and cook well without oil. ( Im vegan/Nutritarian). Thanks for this I’ll try again here in Boston next year. 👍
You're welcome! Glad I could help!
Nice harvest! I bought ten from the grocery store two years ago now I have an endless supply. Great for roasting.
Thanks Brent! That's great to hear. It's hard to be a crop that keeps on giving.
That is a great haul for only a few seed potatoes. Thanks for the share!
Thanks! Yep, we were pretty happy with what we got. Wish we had some more.
I love a potato reveal! What a good harvest this time. Congrats!
Thanks! It's fun to harvest them, and fun to watch others harvest them 😀
this year I'm satisfied with sweet potato and the topinambur harvest.
Nice! Glad your sweet potatoes did well for you!
Good harvest & good it yielded better this time 😃 mmm this makes me excited to harvest my 2 purple potato varieties next month!
Thanks! Good luck with your harvest! Hope you get a bunch!
We are still enjoying Our crop. It was harvested in July, just like you said. We still have a couple lbs left over.
Glad you had a good harvest, Linda! It's always a little sad to eat those last ones.
Your success at growing potatoes makes me want to try growing them again. I failed early on this year when chitting the potatoes. Take Care - Larry
Thanks Larry! Yep, it never hurts to try.
I only grow magic molly for my purple potatoes the flavor is wonderful and the color is amazing!
Thanks for the tip!
Trying out these this year. Just a bit longer for mine ❤
Hope you get a bumper crop, Tracy!
@@MidwestGardener thank you 💜💜
@@tracycrider7778 You're welcome!
Jim, that was a great harvest for only planting 3 seed potatoes! I wonder how much larger the potatoes would have grown if you hadn't harvested them so soon. I have never grown Purple Majesty potatoes. However, since I found out that I'm diabetic, I no longer plant potatoes or other starchy veggies. I hope you and Mrs. Midwest Gardener have a great weekend! ~Margie🤗🦋💐🐝
Thanks Margie! I'm not sure if they would have grown much larger. A couple of them were trying to sprout already. Sorry to hear that you can't grow potatoes anymore. We do what we have to do though. Have a great weekend!
I grew them too in 10 gallon grow bags. Planted at the beginning of June and harvested September 13th and most are the same size as in this video and some were tiny little ones about half inch. I think it was still growing new potatoes, but the stems were looking like they were dying. I do have another bag that still has healthy leaves and stems. I will see if they produce a bigger yield and size.
Awesome harvest. Majestic colour on those potatoes indeed. Happy weekend. Cheers!
Thanks a bunch! The color doesn't really hold when they are cooked, but they do make some dishes a little more interesting.
Nice harvest !!
Thank you!
Absolutely amazing harvest. I really like the color, it's very interesting. I keep saying I want to try purple potatoes but haven't yet. I tried store bought purple sweet potatoes, I wasn't impressed, however I did plant some. I'm hoping home grown will taste better. Do your grow bags get floppy if they are not filled to the top with soil? The ones I have I had to stake open so they didn't flop over. I started my potatoes in a net laundry bag in a PVC frame. Some are poking up out of the soil. I hope it's not too cold up there already. Have a wonderful weekend 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Thanks Shirley! Some of the grow bags want to flop over if they aren't filled all the way. Some of them aren't too bad though. We have had several freezes, but we aren't going to get real cold for another week or so. Have a great weekend!
Very nice. 👍👍
Thanks Bob! We were happy with them.
Those are beautiful!😍 I may give potatoes another chance.
I grew a mix from a big box store seed and had a couple blue ones, no sure of variety but I harvested too early 😔most of them were golf ball size and under 😂 lots of them though, since the plants were dying I thought they were ready 🥹
Yep, it's probably worth another try. That is what I usually tell myself anyway :) Getting lots of them is half the battle.
If you remember I had a couple tomato plants that had 3' stems that I planted. I've dug them up and they had roots all stem
Thanks for sharing that with us, Eleanor! Sounds like that worked out pretty well for you.
I’ve never grown them but they look amazing. 😂have to harvest my potatoes soon. I’m waiting for the stems to turn brown and they haven’t yet.
Thanks! Good luck with your harvest! Harvesting potatoes is always fun.
I grew them this year for the first time and I’m quite pleased I think there’s a lot more I left in the ground. I wonder what will happen to them?
Glad to hear how well they worked for you. The ones you left in the ground will probably sprout next spring.
Good Morning - awesome harvest! My red potatoes did not do well this past season but I have never grown purple potatoes so might have to try those next year. What brand of sulfur do you use to lower the ph and how often do you apply? I used a special potato fertilizer last year but did not get much production. I also think larger planters might help but I have limited space. Hope you have a great weekend and thanks for sharing.
Good morning Sue! Thanks! I will have to check the brand of sulfur. It is out in the garage. I applied once when I planted. Have a great weekend!
How was the flavor of purple majesty?
We thought it was good. We ate them mostly fried with meals.
