  • Massive PURPLE Potato Harvest 2021 | Magic Molly Potatoes Container Gardening | Guten Yardening | Zone 5 Gardening
    100 days ago, we planted our first ever crop of Magic Molly Purple Potatoes in 50 gallon food safe plastic drums.
    This provides us with a total of about 22 square feet of growing space.
    This is the second time we have grown potatoes in this style, and the results this time are better than we have ever seen!
    Magic Molly potatoes are a relatively new variety that were developed in 2007, and they are a vigorous plant. The stems on this variety are the largest we have seen, and from this harvest, you will see that each plant has large production capabilities. The potatoes themselves have a deep purple (almost black) looking skin, and an incredible deep purple interior.
    We are harvesting now, even though there is still some green left on the stems because we are moving on to our next set of crops, and we have a large number of potatoes growing in other mediums and styles around our property.
    We are confident that you will love these potatoes if you give them a try.
    Thanks for watching.

      Hello! Great question. We grew these from seed potatoes that we purchased from our local greenhouse. But, next seaon we will grow them from the purple potatoes that we got in this harvest. It is also possible to grow them from seeds (those form inside of berries that sometimes grow at the top of the plants), but they will not be exactly the same if you do it that way, so the best way to ensure a good harvest is to grow them from the seed potatoes. :)

Let us know if you have additional questions. We routinely fertilize with bone meal and a good all-purpose fertilizer once the plants starts to flower. A bi-weekly application of supplements at this point should promote good tuber development and healthy plants.

Question: Do we have to wait for all of the potatoe plants to get yellow and sort of dying stage to harvest..? We fertilize every two weeks and we check for moisture and are covered in black mulch, almost 6 hrs of sun.. We can't wait to harvest.. we're just city folks from The Bronx NY.. our parents planted many fruit trees in Puerto Rico.. we are trying try something new..! We started planting in a 5gal container and it's been 8 weeks and we are amazed how they grow especially over night.. I guess we have two more months give and take a week more.. we need the stalks to die off a little more. I wish I could send you a photo..! Thanks..!

    I don't think I've ever grown a variety of potatoes that were truly ready to dig in less than 120 days.. Even the supposed "90" day varieties will go 120 days most of the time.. Letting the plants go those last few weeks can make or break a harvest.. That's when the tubers are growing at their fastest rate.. That's why the plants die, because they are putting every ounce of energy they make into the potatoes at this stage of their life.. The potatoes can actually double in size every few days during that period if the conditions are right..

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Před rokem

      I don't disagree with you at all. Unless we are having a hard time with voles or some other critters, we like to leave our plants as long as possible regardless of the start date. I could say the same for sweet potatoes (even though they are a different family). We try to take advantage of as much of the growing season as possible here in zone 5. That being said, especially for the shorter seasons, I can see where people could run out of time and need a variety that could at least yield a decent harvest sooner. Thank you so much for the comment Mark!

    • @MarkLada
      @MarkLada Před rokem

      @Guten Gardening I'm in East Central Indiana, zone 6.. If we have a late spring.. I usually have to dig my potatoes before the plants die back all the way.. Because I need the plot for fall crops.. Normal weather years, which are becoming less and less frequent around here.. I have just enough time to let my potatoes finish, and then plant broccoli and cabbage.. I've never grown the magic mollys, but I found a blue variety called Adirondack Blue that looks very similar to them.. They seem to do really well also if you have to dig them early.. They've yielded better than my Yukon Golds the past couple years, but not as well as my pontiac reds..

      Hello Deb! If you were in the US, we would send you some, but I don't know about sending outside of the US. :( We got these from a place called Jungs, and it is possible they will have them again next season. Here is the link to their website: www.jungseed.com/product/J04622/614 They are so worth it. I believe we will continue to grow this variety based on how prolific they were this year. Thank you for watching!

      @@GutenGardening Hi, no way to get to me, but I appreciate the thought. Sorry, I was thinking you were in Eastern Canada....then realized you're over the wall. Thank you for replying....I'll continue my hunt. I grow way too many varieties just to keep heirlooms going, but decided this year to stop growing varieties I don't actually care for and just keep 15 or so favorites plus my tps. These look really intriguing, kind of a cross between my Purple Peruvian and Russian blues....could be a new fav if I can get my hands on a couple. Happy growing, Deb. ✌

    Hi new subscriber, are these determinate or indeterminate potatoes ?
    Thank u

      @GutenGardening  Před 2 lety

      Hello Josette, we are not actually 100% sure. It looks to me like they are likely determinate, and so you can see when didn't mound them at all. But in researching them, that was one answer that was really hard to come by for us. One thing is for sure, though, they are great producers!

    how deep was the container? does it have a bottom. I've got 3 types of purples and I've never grown them before. there is almost no one growing mini tubers on you tube. I wish I could get a good mini tuber video. I'm excited I hope I have the same luck as you. How long did these store? If I pull them in August or October then How could I store them to last till March again for planting? I read purple doesn't store well but I spent $35 for mini tubers and I dont want to sound that again next year. ??

    where can I GET seed

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Před 2 lety +1

      We purchase our original magic molly seed potatoes from Jung Garden Center. Usually they are available in-store during the early spring months. According to google Urban Farmers online store is accepting preorders. You could try looking around online for other suppliers. Most places will be accepting preorders and might not have them in stock.

      I think you are going to find that most places are out of stock right now, but the least expensive we have found is about $6 per pound from Jungs.

      The nice thing is, if you plant that once, you will have plenty of seed potatoes for the following seasons.
