This song is written from the perspective of Betty, who is one point of a love triangle portrayed by 3 songs on the folkore album. They are supposed to be around 17 so what taylor means by “when you are young they assume you know nothing” is that people underestimate or invalidate young love because it’s “not real” or “young people don’t know what love is yet” and they don’t take it seriously. However this love that Betty is experiencing is real and she KNOWS that which is how she is so sure that even though her partner (James) strayed from her (“chase two girls, loose the 1”) he will come back (“i knew you’d come back to me”)

the “when you are young they assume you know nothing” ties into another song in betty the narrator says “i’m only 17 i don’t know anything” so it’s basically that narrator is like “it’s not my fault bc i’m dumb and young” and in this one she’s like “that’s not really an excuse bc /i/ knew /you/ and it hurts even more bc you should have known me”
I would definitely recommend checking out the longpond studio sessions (for this song, but also august & betty - the other two parts to folklore’s “teenage love triangle”)
It’s fun to see Taylor explain her ideas and songwriting process, plus live performance in studio with Jack & Aaron. The whole thing is great ofc but a song you’ve already heard maybe a good starting place
You should listen to the entire Folklore album if you like her lyrics and this vibe. Entire album is like this, telling amazing stories. You can watch her lyric videos followed by her live performance of the song in the Long Pond Studio sessions in which she explains the song prior to performing it with the 2 co-writers/producers on this album. There is a reason it it is one of the highest acclaimed albums and won Album of the Year at the Grammys. Due to Covid there was only one official video done but she has nice lyric videos and you would be missing out on an amazing album and the stories in it just because it doesn’t have a lot of MV. But the lyrics! The lyrics!!!!
If you love the song Lover so much you will probably like most of the Lover album. I think you got the premise of Cardigan, when you were younger, didn't you think that you knew it all, and your parents, or the ones that raised you, didn't think you knew anything. Anyway, I am glad to hear you are still going to do the live performances, Taylor really does put on a show, and I have really been looking forward to seeing your reactions. I feel like you are really understanding Taylor more so than some of the other male reactors.

Cardigan is part of a trilogy of a novel. Cardigan is in perspective of a girl named Betty. The characters in this story must be around 17 years old. And talks about how Betty's boyfriend cheated on her with another girl who is featured on the August track from the same album. Here taylor talks about how Betty's boyfriend played with her feelings and her heart, but knows that when he falls he will come back asking Betty for forgiveness and a new beginning. Here talks about how people use the phrase "you're young, you're still learning" to excuse any blunder a man commits against someone. Cardigan talks a lot about the feeling of betrayal and confusion, as when Taylor is in the ocean with the piano it shows that things have gotten out of control (James' betrayal) and that Betty doesn't know what to do in this situation because it's something new in life her.
Cardigan, Betty and August is the trilogy that is talked about. Cardigan in Betty's vision, Betty in James' vision and August in the other girl's vision. This trilogy is part of folklore, a very heavy and dense album, which addresses depression, loneliness, social isolation, wars (in the physical and metaphorical sense), references to suicide and the feeling of feeling empty or incomplete. For anyone who has had depression like me, it's the best album to listen to

ETA: I think the black lipstick part is a callback to her Met Gala look in 2016. It could also be a reference to her album Lover.
"When you're young they assume know nothing" is a response to another song from the guy's perspective when he said he cheated on her because he was young and didn't know anything. But she knew him well enough that he will come back to her once the thrill is expired so it's like calling him out for making an excuse. He exactly KNEW what he was doing but did it anyway.

It's great getting to watch you discover Taylor Swift as a recent convert myself. This song is off of her album Folklore, and Taylor Swift filmed a live session of the entire album, where she discusses the creation and production of each track. It's called "Folklore The Long Pond Studio Sessions" and it is beautiful to listen to her live. Officially it's part of a trilogy of songs with August and Betty on the Folklore album. But there is a whole lot of her real-life stuff in here, the play on words is crazy. Sequin smile black lipstick sensual politics - google her look at the 2016 Met Gala where she met her boyfriend Joe. Dancing your Levi's drunk under a street light - she refers to Joe and his jeans and dive bar in Delicate. Her wordplay is crazy how she spins this from a fictional story and double entendre to her life. The video for Willow continues where this video left off, and that's almost certainly about Joe. Folklore is some of her best work, you should listen to the whole album. (Exile is required listening, also)
I haven't seen anyone else mention it, but you could actually buy that cardigan on her website - that was some of the limited edition merch for folklore, and I've kind of always regretted not getting one.
