The X-T4 is one of the best cameras ever made irrespective of sensor size or resolution, but it is a KILLER camera for street photography - especially with the lenses I recommend for it. But a used X-T2 is just about as good, and you can pick one up used (and the lenses to go with it) for a fraction of the price.

The X-T2 was the camera that brought me into the Fujifilm universe after decades of Nikon shooting, both film and digital. That experiment has led me today to owning 5 Fuji bodies (X-Pro2, X-T3 and several X-E class bodies) and 10 lenses.
The cool thing, that beat up and well worn X-T2 is now giving me some of my best images. Why? Because I have already got my money's worth from it, and therefore it is no longer something to protect and coddle. It is a true tool, that never gets left behind. The image quality is still fantastic and while I have the newest sensor bodies, I've never felt that my images from the X-T2 were "less than".
Once you stop caring about the hardware, you can really start caring about using it.

I simply love both of them - but somehow my heart beats a wee bit more for the x-t1. Why? The colors!!!!

What do you think about x-e3 x100f and x-t2 , the x-t2 is too big for travel and walking or not? Id like to find a universal camera for travel, walking and some family photos. I already have 5d mark2 canon, but it is a big for everyday walking and traveling. Thx for response
@@heythere1151 I came to Fujifilm from using full frame Nikon DSLRs, so for me the X-T2 (and X-T3) is still small enough to be a good travel camera. The X-E3 has the same sensor as the X-T2, and I'm glad that I own it, but if we're talking "travel camera" then I think that weather resistance should be considered. The X-T class and the X-Pro series have the ability to tolerate some rain, making them desirable in a travel situation.
After the large, heavy DSLR, I don't find any Fujifilm X camera too big.

Watching this in 2024, this is even more true!
And if you go old school with manual vintage lenses from the 70ties with an adaptor you can have glass at a similar cost as a premium caffe latte :)
Ansel Adams went into the national parks and made these iconic images with equipment that was 100% manual and where one needed to think before pressing the shutter button :)
Especially in today's fast moving world it is good to take a step back and slow down and then you start to see also completely new things especially as a street photographer.
Mastering manual focus will help you a lot to slow down, certainly in the beginning.
But in the 70ties that was what people had at as gear and there are fantastic street photography pictures from that aera.
I am not an enemy of technology but as you said rightly, it is not the features of the camera that count, but what you need to do your photography.

Great series idea, Hugh, and I agree the X-T2 and the (pick your lens) makes a capable, compact, and affordable street kit. I feel the same way about the X-E2 and X-E2s. Both great choices for (say it with me) 99% of people 99% of the time, I’m also a fan of KEH. I’ve sold plenty of gear to them when I wanted a fair price and was more interested in an easy, secure sale than absolute maximum dollar. I’ve bought from them too and find their rating system to be spot on if not a little conservative (my “Excellent” PEN-F looked more like “Like New Minus” to my picky eye). Honestly would grab X-t30 with the 18-55mm f2.8-4 and later invest into the 16mm f1.4 and the 56mm f1.2. Been walking the streets of Toronto with the X-t30 with the 18-55mm and been loving it. Also been playing around with the 56mm f1.2 and it's been solid for street images.
Just picked up an xt2 used and have been using it with a vintage Minolta 50 1.4 and loving it. With the focus peaking I don’t feel I really need at. And with the Fuji build it feel like I’m using my canon a1. I want to pick up at least one Fuji lens for stabilization and weather sealing when I need it but I love using vintage lenses on it so far!!

I totally agree with you about the xt2, I recently brought one. I was looking at the xt3 as I consider the xt4 is made for people who are interested in video. I was watching you tube and realised that the xt2 did more than I would ever need.
I picked up a barely used xt2. I’m more than happy with it.
I’m glad to be off the hamster wheel that the manufactures have us on, I didn’t even realise I was on it!

Great video, looking forward to future episodes. With a similar thought in mind, I recently acquired a pre-owned X-Pro 1, which has given a new lease of life to my unused and largely forgotten XF18mm f/2. Flawed beauties, both, for sure, but beauties nonetheless, and now always in my bag as I venture back out onto the streets of London.

Hi Hugh. I don´t normally comment. I did however feel like doing so today, simply to say thank you. Your work is nothing short of outstanding. I've become used to your quality of work these last 2 or 3 years. So no surprises there. I dont always have time to photograph, but manage to slip in 1 or 2 of your podcasts. Then again these are not pod casts. But your voice and assurance alone, well, would surely provide for great content. Keep that thought :-)

I will agree that, as a stills photographer, there is simply no need to covet the latest and greatest digital camera. You can purchase any flagship camera made in the last 5 or 6 years and get everything you'd ever want in a stills camera. Great selection of glass, great auto focus, flexibility to shoot jpg, raw, or with a picture profile. I shoot with an A7iii and an A7Riii (Sony) and feel absolutely no need to upgrade because I can't imagine ever needing anything more from any of their subsequent, newer models.
I do however salivate at the thought of also investing in a fuji xt series camera. Half the time I shoot 35mm film cameras anyway, so the fuji appeals to my other half!
All this being said, don't fall into the trap of obsessing over the latest thing, because you'll be happier and financially healthier buying something that sometimes is only a year or two old.

You should get a used gfx. I had one and had to decide btwn that and my a7rIII but now I miss it so much and its been 2 years since I sold it. I only used MF lenses on mine BTW.
Used A7iii is 2x the price of used X t-2. Why would you even think of upgrading?

Another solid video as always. I sold my X-T2 just yesterday. Don't need it since I have the X-Pro3 now. The timing on this video got me feeling a bit bittersweet about that transaction.
Not gonna lie, started this now and probably gonna use this instead of the headspace app to fall asleep to. Your videos are always super interesting but also happen to have (probably) the most zen audio on CZcams. It's just so measured and beautiful. 😅

As prices have risen over time for cameras I have changed from waiting for the latest iteration to drop in new price to getting the second hand copy from a reputable source. So far so good for the last three purchases!
Until this year, I had shot street exclusively with my Fuji xt3 or xt20 - in addition to occasionally shooting on film. Honestly, as much as I try to convince myself I prefer shooting with my new to me Leica m10d, I truly adore using and prefer the results I get with the xt3. You make great points about using the xt2, especially for street photography. If one has an xt2, they’re pretty much set until the really just want to move on to another camera. The Fuji xt line is very easy to love.

I love my xt2. Because I do have a champagne taste, but only a beer budget. Lol. My current favorite lens is my 23mm f1.4. It's the perfect set up for me. Great video. Can't wait for next episode.

I am one of those who spent thousands over the years searching for the best next thing, and all that GAS stopped when I finally settled with the X-T3 and 18mm f2, 23mm f2, 35mm f1.4, and 60mm 2.4. probably I won't ever sell that kit it has served me well on my travels ( just as I don't think I would ever sell my M8 and M9P beauties).

I Just bought a Mint XT2 , very Nice camera
Great message. Nothing wrong with new gear. Love that fresh from the factory smell. It just doesn’t have a lot to do with the purpose, intention and results of photography. If you are spending all of your time reading reviews and comparing specifications then you are not spending that time figuring out how to communicate your message through images or creating opportunities to capture your vision. Where you go, what your eye sees is far more important than processor speed or the difference between 16 and 24 Mega pixels. Sure some specs are important but only as far as they allow you to capture your vision. Frames per second for a sports photographer comes to mind.
This is going to be a nice series, I’ll watch it if I’m not out making photographs. Leaving for a trip tomorrow with hopes and plans for some nice images that speak my language. Charlie in Virginia

This new series is exactly what i need. Looking to buy used mirrorless as can't afford new and considering Fujifilm x-e4, x-s10, x-t2 or Nikon z6 or Sony A7r ii etc. Used to shoot professionally for 25 years with canon dslr's and now wanting to get back into photography just for my enjoyment as well as digitizing old negatives.

Thoughtful video. I love my X-T2 and bought it new when they were first released. I remember buying the prime WR-23 1:2 and the salesperson letting out a whistle at the price...but Fuji primes are amazing and worth the costs.

Oh, also bought an adapter for my old MD glass to use on my Zs through KEH…..using old opticss on new cameras can create effects that have been engineered out of modern glass! I now love mixing old and new!
Had an x100f but sold it after buying a used xt2 body for around $400 and the 16-55 new. It just does everything and more than what I need.
Yes. KEH I have never had the slightest problem with.
Also the Olympus Pen F is a very good choice. Very unique camera with many features to create your own color and monochrom settings. In addition the prime lenses 12 mm f2, 17mm f1,8 and 45mm f 1,8.Corresponding 24, 35 and 90 mm in terms of full format.
not a fan of the preset dials, much prefer to have iso, shutter and exposure compensation dials on the cam than a pasm dial

Love this new segment. I have great new bought Nikon Zs, but lately, I have stepped back to dabble where I started using my 1980s era Nikon & Minolta SLRS. I have purchased a number of used F mount AIS optics (many through KEH) which I could not afford as a teenager, for a song! With a bad back, I find that a film body and a handful of super small primes has advantages…..forget an Fuji Neopan Acros simulation, I used the real deal!
There is something deeply satisfying about owning what one couldn’t afford many years ago. The perspective that comes as result? Even better!
Thank you, Hugh, for your valuable suggestions like before I'm a huge fan of Fuji film's X-series cameras and X-T2 has been one of my favorites but the lens selection, as it always has been, is of utmost importance than the camera body of a kind and I'm immensely benefited by this video. I personally feel that fuji's XF 18-135 f3.5 IS WR lens is a much less expensive alternative to bulkier much too expensive lenses to carry in the streets and I'd like a precious insight about the lens from you.
The 18-55 kit lens punches above its weight class, but I've never had the 18-135 in hand (and have never met a lens with this kind of focal length that I like). I also prefer primes as I'd rather keep the combo over my shoulder, happily carrying a second lens in a pocket or small bag.
I had been window shopping on a used camera site and put an XT2 in my basket. A few days later I was back at that site and made a smaller purchase. When the package came I removed the lesser item and then nearly recycled an XT2 that was at the bottom of the box and which I accidentally purchased not noticing it was still in the merchants basket. I was considering sending it back but once in hand there was no way this gem was going to be returned. It’s now 2024 and sure cameras improve every year but to be honest there is nothing on this camera that feels dated. Very well built, fast AF and if you can live with 24mp (enough for what I do) then yes this is the best bargain of a used camera out there. I teamed it with a Fuji WR 16 F2 and a Sigma 30 1.4. The total package ran me about $1300. Not bad👍
Lovely camera, but a tag heavy, which is why I liked the xt20 more. Those prime lenses are beautiful and I wish Olympus had revised their standard primes to match them .
I also shoot on an EM 10 Mkii because it is so light and small .
My first camera was a Fuji , then 6x6 , 5x4 and I had used Nikon and Canon film and digital pro cameras.

And... it was exactly this that you got me to spend that £850 on! Following that X-Pro 2 review and - as the same sensor - an ex demo, otherwise unused (3 shots apparently; we’ll see when it arrives, EBAY, sigh) and an “Immaculate “ (we’ll see when it arrives, EBay etc!) 18-55mm zoom.
Let’s see if it rekindles my love of photography which the departed A7R3 didn’t. Really glad to see it only shoots in BW too...

I have surrendered all my fuji and moved back to nikon but nothing will make sell my X-pro 2 in monochrome I have never shot a camera that is such a great experience
Totally agree ! In my opinion the XT2 (made in Japan) is the best build quality X series ever made! I have owned an XT3 and the build quality was very poor. I have also used XT4 certainly better than the 3, but you are very hard pressed to see the difference in photo results so for about a third of the price by far the best value is the XT2 and use your spare cash on glass.

My used XT2 with 35mm is a great street camera and my XT20 with a Zeiss 50mm macro is another favourite

Bought a xt2 from offer up for 350. Picked up a fuji 18-55 lens for 250. Great kit on the cheap. Funny thing is the seller gave me a xt3 on accident and called me up a month later wanting to swap. Seller was thankful I met up with him to exchange but in the end I got a great camera at a great price.
I wish I would of bought the X-T3 brand new when it was on sale for $999

Definitely a great camera. I own the X-T1 which I reckon still holds up relatively well for a 7 year old camera, and more recently was considering an X-T2, but ended up with the X-Pro 2 as I prefer the rangefinder styling. It's amazing to see how well these older cameras hold up years after they were released.
Yes, I'm lucky enough to own both but the Xpro 2 along with the 3 are my go to gear. Use the XT2 for landscape at times but less and less these days - enjoying street much more.

@@PunjabiGymBeats Hi, unless you want to use a range finder particularly and would use the hybrid system regularly and are right eye dominant, then for simpler and more straightforward use I would go for the XT2 over the XPRO2. Either way the images will turn out the same. The other plus on the XT-2 is that you can purchase a battery grip which means three rather than only one battery. Handy if you want to blast away photographing the kids sports day - XPRO 2 is limited in that regard. I use my XPRO2 for street. Hope you get a good deal on your purchase.

Great video! Though I’m a forever Canon DSLR shooter, I have a huge respect for Fuji cameras in terms of street photography. For the money the XT-2, or a discounted XT-30 or even the X100V (if you don’t need various focal lengths) are the way to go. But to tell my sin… the only reason to leave my Canon would be a Leica (that way my life’s savings will be spent)!!

Ive got a couple Fuji’s and my only real gripe is sometimes critical focus feels out of reach. I do love pic profiles and shockingly affordable lenses
I really felt the need to upgrade from my X-T2 until I got the XF90 about a month ago (and the 35f2 shortly before that)..
I bought one as the weather sealed grab, to save my xt30,my xt30 has sat in the cupboard ever since no matter what the weather.
Aside from ibis and 10 bit, still don't feel the need to update my XT-2 and XT20..... fell n love with Fuji with XE1 and the wonderful lenses that were made in Japan. Those lenses still are all that I use. Although I'm starting to shoot some wildlife video and may move away from Fuji. Don't really want 40mp stills...... Never thought I'd say! Thanks for your thoughtful commentary!
Oh and for street imaging the Japanese 18-55 is amazing..... Amazing for anything really. That lens started me down the road of ditching all my old Canon L series lenses

Still loving my XT10 X70 and tiny Lumix lx3. No need for new yet.
I would love to see the original X-Pro 1 sensor in a new x-pro body with current evf's as well as current film simulations. They (IMO) have made better this and better that but the original x-trans sensor was the best.
I also liked you thought about slowing down. Adapting old lenses to modern mirrorless cameras is a great way to do this if the evf is top shelf (a limiting factor for the ex2 and x-pro 1) like the current cream of the crop. I have been pairing Leica 35mm summy with the Z5, and the 21mm Voigtländer color skopar with the Fuji's and just zone focus at f8. FUN!!!
I have a video request. I would love to see a video (with your spin) on post processing. Software used workflow, I don't recall ever seeing one on your channel. Just thought it would be interesting.
I’ve stayed away from my post processing and most other “how-tos” because the idea of routinizing one’s art and artistic vision doesn’t feel right to me.
Can't believe I recently bought a nearly-new X-S10 with the mindset of replacing my X-T2, which I've really liked for a couple of years. Thought I needed IBIS and that larger grip/lighter body would be a benefit, but I've found that I missed the analog controls and the X-T2's flip screen. I'd still like to get an X-H1 in my hands, but I have a feeling that I'll be keeping my X-T2 until it craps out...or until the X-T5 gets cheap enough to be compelling. I don't need better image quality than the X-T2 provides, even for large prints, but I know eventually I'll be able to convince myself that an upgrade is very necessary...

I think this is going to be a good series Hugh. Regarding the x-t2 as a budget camera, I think it's a good choice. I would add this however: The X-S10 would also be a good choice. It's lighter, has ibis, flip screen, and has the same specs basically. I know, the shooting experience isn't the same. But, that might not be a bad thing since the Fuji system isn't for everyone. The X-S10 might bridge that gap. I know you mentioned it, but very quickly and maybe further exploration of it might have been warranted. Still, I love your choice of the X-T2 as the first in this series. I love that camera.
I say this while owning the X-T2, X-T4, X-S10, the X100t and X100f and have owned other Fuji's too. Yes, I'm a bit of a Fuji fan.
and the amazing grip for ease of carrying it around all day and perhaps even better with gloves on too

The XS-10 IS a sweet spot in their lineup; especially for hybrid shooters THE sweet spot, I think!

@@3BMEP Hi Hugh. I have the XT-4 and the XS-10, which I got as a second body. Guess which one goes out the door with me most. Even balances really well with the 70-300 and x 1.4. If I had to go to one body that would be the one.

My favorite kit from the days I used Fuji, is the X-Pro2 combined with the 23 and 50 f2 lenses. It’s still in one of my bags whenever I need something truly portable for the day. Beautiful small package and -esp used- very affordable. Similar IQ as the X-T2, but I love the ‘rangefinder’ style of the X-Pro’s.
I occasionally think about buying a second system "just for fun". But, I always end up adding a lens to my main system (Sony) or upgrading my cameras. If I did buy a second system it would be the X-T2 and a few Fuji lenses.
I think an A7C with a Zeiss loxia could be fun. My hands are a bit big for the A7C but feel perfect on the XT4. Just grab the Loxia 35 F2 😄for your A7iii
Just did a NY city street photo shoot with a LUMIX GX8 and a 15mm f/1.7 lens with fantastic results. M43 worked great. We make too much of the number of MPs.

I bought into the Fuji system with the XT2. It is still hard to beat and always my first choice when I walk out the front door ( despite owning an XH1 and a Nikon System ). Two weeks in Japan (2019) with the kit lens and a Samyang 12mmf2 was a joy. Compact? The 50mm f2 is the best Fuji lens IMHO. Lighter, sharper and better flare control than the 56. The XT2 capability exceeds the capability of 95% of photographers.
I’ve owned three 50s and three 56s. both are sharp but the 56 is sharper if you find a good one. A youtuber recently did a 1;1 comparison between the 50 f1, 50f2, and 56 1.2. guess which came out on top for sharpness.
the 90 f2 is sharper than them all.
the xt2 is easy to beat. xt3 and xt30. any 26mp xtrans camera destroys anything 24mp.

Many people can go out and throw cash at tech and get great results. The real world requires most of us to look at pre-owned and we want to get the most for our buck ! Ty for this series

@@GrandHuevotes have that one too but the focal length makes it a bit more specialised and it’s a bit too sharp for portraiture. Flare control is just as important as sharpness ( resolution). I had the 56 for a few weeks. Not overly impressed. The 50f2 gives me results I love.

It's currently 2023. Thanks for your video. I will definitely buy the fuji xt2!!. Just one question, I a high school student and I want to shoot portrait (especially my crush, I want to shoot in secret), my school is large about 23000m2. Should I buy the XF 50-200 or the viltrox 85mm f1.8?

I've had an X-S10 for just under a year with many lenses and just scored an X-T2 and am grabbing that more now and the S10 might be a permanent Webcam at this point especially after I added the Meike vertical grip to the T2. What causes this to happen? You can almost feel the "density" difference between things made in Japan and things made in the rest of the world. I believe the T2 is the last Fuji camera to be made in Japan but correct me if I'm wrong. The only problem I have with my T2 with latest f/w is that the first 3 or 4 custom lens focal lengths seem to be fixed with the remaining ones I'm able to change. Any ideas? Thank you.
oh, so you think the X-T2 is the ultimate budget king of street photography? Well I would agree on that, but let's take the point of view of an absolute beginner that wants to go into the Fujifilm system.
Fujifilm lenses are expensive. I mean really expensive, that's the price to pay for better than average sharpness whe it comes to common lenses. There is a few exceptions here and there where Fuji lenses can be cheap AND affordable (namely the XC 35mm F2 and the XC 15-45. Honorable mention to the XC 16-50 as well) but most of the time, even old Fuji designs like the XF 18-55 lens hold their value a lot despite their age, a thing that camera bodies aren't following, the price of each generation dropping considerable each time a new one is released.
So for a beginner that don't really have a lot of money to spend in a camera system and still wants autofocus and decent sharpness out of a lens, well he'll have to pay extra for a few lenses compared to Canon / Nikon systems (if you go EF / F mounts obviously). So paying around $500 for a camera body can be a bit much, especially if you're a beginner, where resolution, dual card slots and that kind of things aren't really a priority.
Because there's another X-T camera that is an awesome deal since it can be bought for dirt cheap these days : The forgotten X-T1. Yeah, you loose a bit of resolution going from 24MPx to 16. Yeah, you loose a card slot. But you have a camera that takes wonderful pictures, and with its X-Trans II sensor with a very special color processing and no AA filter, this is one of the les camera bodies that truly have a soul in my opinion. Despite its age, the autofocus still works well for street, the only downside is video where it tops off at 1080p60, but even then that's enough for most people.
I'd highly recommend to get one even for people already using an X-T2 or X-T3/4, because the camera is that much different and unique in today's market
The XT2 was really good for its time. The 3’s were significantly better though.
If only KEH had a European branch. Time to revisit my X-T2.

I had the xpro1 it was nice but lacking in some respects, but when the Xpro2 came out I bought it along with the XT2. Full stop, for me there is no need to upgrade t o the XT4 , it does all I need and want, so why spend cash on bodies, I spent it on glass instead, done and done. 23mm f1.4 and the XT2 does 80% of what I do. I dont worry about weather sealing too much, it seems to work tru all weather condition, save the cold kills the batteries up here 🇨🇦
Street camera’s usually are small with fixed lenses inconspicuous and 1 hand controls 😊 with shoot by the hip mainly. XT2 is a legend for Fuji (I have the XT1, X70 ) and the X70 is the one I use for street, small and no one cares if you use it. As soon as people see a Zoom look alike lens .. you get noted. Love from Australia.
I like a very small compact carry for street when I travel: the XT1 with battery grip (it IS very compact, more so than the XT2-4 with grip) and the 27mmf2.8 pancake lens. This kit gives me all day battery life with the W126S batteries. Around town at home it's hard to beat the XPro3 with the 23mmf2 or 27mmf2.8 or even the much maligned 18mmf2.
