- There's a town in between Columbus and Dayton, which gets rave reviews from just about everyone who visits. Yellow Springs has history, art, nature and an overwhelming sense that people can be whoever they want to be.
I spent the day there on July 4th. It was a celebration of independence unlike any I've ever experienced.

Come along and travel the world with Richard Green. Retiring in the spring of 2023, I am embarking on full-time world travel. I'm going solo, but the idea here is not to focus on me so much. It's about the places and the people along the way.
The title Old, Alone and Far From Home might initially come across as a sad state of being. My mission is to show that it's just the opposite.
Thank you for another excellent video. You are an amazing video tour guide!
You are too kind. I think I've just been fortunate to visit some extremely beautiful and intriguing places!
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome What state are you from or do you call home? Is it Ohio?
I grew up nextdoor in fairborn and frequented YS multiple times a week as a kid, mountain biking in the parks, riding on the bike trails, and eating at the local spots. Now that I have a family of my own, it would be a dream to live in and make an actual home out of the “home away from home” that this place served as for me when I was young. You captured the beauty of YS perfectly 💞
I'll bet that you have some fantastic memories of the place! It is a wonderful town that I can't wait to visit again in the future!
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome I definitely do! And thank you for such an awesome video! Did you get to go inside any of the shops?
@@fal5174 I did go into a few shops, but it was July 4th and I was busy much of the time. I would actually like to go back someday and just enjoy the town, without my camera!
Great video! Looks like a fun place to visit!
It was a really great way to spend the 4th!
Thanks for the heads up
I appreciate you watching!
What a wonderful visit through a magical place.
I appreciate that! Such a wonderful thing for you to say!
Thank you for watching.
Yellow Springs is my home town but it has changed. The village is what is known as a tourist trap. It is too expensive for many people who grew up there to continue to live there.
But, you have staved off the sprawl of the village and from getting swallowed by Fairborn. Whitehall Farm could have sprouted houses instead of crops?
Lived in Yellow Springs for a few years in the late 90s while I was in the Air Force. It was a wonderful town, and I wish I had stayed longer. Rumor has it that Ye Olde Trail Tavern was frequented by Charles Manson before he went to Cali.
That is quite interesting about Charles Manson. I really enjoyed Yellow Springs!
Thank you for watching!
My home town! Great place!
I truly enjoyed my time there!
I've heard from a few people that they want to plan a visit after seeing the video.
I'm just here because of Dave Chappelle.
lol! oh yeah...Dave's taking over the entire area, pretty much.
🤣🤣🙌🏼
Grew up in Dayton. My mom was a big hippie. We visited frequently. Smoked my first joint in YS. When I revisit my old hometown, I always revisit YS. Wonderful place!
@@stardust949He's spending his money in the village rather than another municipality. Be grateful and thankful.
You should wear an undershirt if your going to walking round in the summer sun - Is it that humid??!
You are probably right, but I've never been an undershirt kind of guy.
Great retirement plan!
Live 5 min away. Better be rich to live there. Every house is half mil minimum and up. This hasn't changed much since the cost of housing went up. Don't get me wrong, it's a cool town. I Go there regularly. But the vast majority of the people you see in the town at the stores are visiting.
. . Yellow springs tho?!. . Lol
. . The best golden shower's in the state.
Stopped going when they mandated mask to be in the town.
It’s a “diverse” place and they like it that way, provided the white folks who have the BLM signs in their yards don’t actually have a black person within a mile of their property. You’d also be fine there as long as you are pro-illegal immigration, vaccine mandates, believe J6 was an actual insurrection and think MSNBC is legitimate news. These are people that can live in a fantasy land while being protected against people like Joe Biden because they live in a “red” state. Their lives and livelihood are also protected for the same reason. Move to Gavin Newsome’s California if you want to be a blue speck in different kind of red state (the communist variety) and see how that turns out for you. Gorgeous place though, but there are a lot of gorgeous places in Ohio.
You did a great job capturing the colorful aspects of Y.S. I'm a permanent resident, my husband and I are homeowners and have raised our kids here---went through the whole 9 yards of decades of involvement. But now, while I still appreciate the friendships developed over the years, and SOME of the atmosphere here---I am not on board with about 98% of its political stances and attitudes. Some days, I would just love to wrap up all the "blue dot" idiots and chuck them into a communist run country and see what they think about their wokeness then. Yes, a pretty harsh statement, I know---but---you don't know what it's like to live here, surrounded by their clap-trap and deluded preaching. lol!! Your film footage of Clifton Gorge and Glen Helen was gorgeous---spot on! John Bryan State Park connects Clifton Gorge and Glen Helen---so we have a marvelous band of natural woodland beauty that is preserved here. 😊
Damn I saw the woke flags , etc. Just what I don't need
Well its better to be woke than Maga moronic. At least the"Woke" still believe in free and fair elections! 🤣 I mean Grumpie caused an insurrection, and your worried about being too woke! You need perspective!!
YS’s political culture has been a part of its identity since its founding. Between being the first to pass anti-discrimination laws for a town of its size, coexisting with natives in the area during its founding, and being a welcoming point for black people when neighboring towns like Fairborn were still sundown-towns even for black service members and their families, of course the atmosphere has a “blue” aura. Why does that surprise you? It’s not a recent movement, it’s been going on for over 200 years in YS.
Millions of people have died with social justice and equality as an excuse. Jesus Christ what a downer to hear that language
Don't come, it's not like it seems
Lets be fair while its a great small village theres.not a lot of diversity. Mostly white people. Tons of alphabet flags .
Hi, I was considering visiting and saw your comment. Could you explain what you mean by alphabet flags and go into more detail about the diversity?
@@na_k Yellowsprings is a predominantly white progressive village aka people who pretend they're diverse but really aren't. Alphabet flag is just a cheeky way to say lgbtq flag. I live in a low income working class neighborhood in ohio and it's way more diverse than yellow springs.
@@kaeserdwhat’s the crime like there ?
@@jackrader4428 I have no idea. I only go there for weekend and day trips
