So the circle of holes on the back of the unit don’t need to be exposed to the air? If you sit it flat on a shelf it’s blocking the holes.

Our measurements are Bg/m³. Your measurement of 4 being bad is equal to our 200 Bg/m³ being the same level of alarm.
So, you being 0.5/4 is only 1/8th the danger level. Be happy with your results.
Where I live, we can see 100/200 Bg/m³. (Which would be 2 on your scale). That is 50% of the critical level for concern. 😬
