  • Welcome to the eleventh episode of my audio-only podcast, FILM SHOCKS! WITH HITCHCOCK! For 2022, every week will be devoted to a film from the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. Today, it's MURDER! & MARY!
For future episodes, I ask that you view the next movie in Hitchcock's filmography before the next episode. Send your thoughts and I'll share them during the discussion. For today's episode, what do you think of MURDER! MARY and Hitchcock in general?

What do you mean this was Herbert Marshall’s only credit in a Hitchcock film? He also has the juicy role of peace party leader Stephen Fisher in Foreign Correspondent, as well as being one of the great actor of Hollywood’s Golden Age (Trouble in Paradise, The Little Foxes, The Good Fairy, Mad About Music, The Secret Garden).

I watched Murder! this morning … did not watch Mary yet. I especially enjoyed the jury deliberation as well as Sir John’s attempt to unravel the mystery. It did drag slightly for me around the 1 hour mark … did Mary seem more evenly paced due to its shorter run time? My Juno and the Paycock DVD arrived this week … just need to decide which region free player to pick up to be able to watch it. The french Universal DVD release of Waltzes from Vienna also arrived :)

I actually didn’t find that the pacing improved in Mary. Some scenes were shortened but I think it slows down in both versions after Diana (Mary) is visited in prison.
