- I demonstrate how I painted a Rhinoceros in watercolor on Fabriano Artistico soft press watercolor paper. I use a limited palette of only two colours. I'll show you how I painted the grass, how I mix my paint, the cast shadows and why I painted them on before all the wrinkles. I also use some watercolour pencils at the end of the painting.

It's a lovely painting. Beautifully done.
Haha love the blooper scenes. 😍
I love the work you’ve created with only two or three colours and it has influenced my way of painting a lot. Thank you for sharing your painting process, it’s always a joy to watch!
Fabriano soft press paper is my favourite ever … it’s unique paper surface.
It is unique. Thanks very much Rosa.
I just love watching you paint. I love all your work. It's so beautiful, simple but thoughtful. Im not sure how to describe it. I learn something every video.
Thank you so much Louise you always push the limits and inspire me to do better and that is amazing 👏❤
This is fantastic! It’s wonderful the range and textures you achieved with the two colors. Plus who doesn’t love a rhino 🦏
I absolutely love the colors you selected and I love the range of brights to the neutrals they create :-) Your drawing skills and your eye for color do nature justice, which is very difficult to do :-) thank you for sharing
Can’t wait for this to come to Patreon. The paper gave the rhino a real sense of it’s hide. 😍
One of my favourite animals is the Rhinoceros just cant get enough of them
I just caught the brilliant use of highlighting the geometric shapes of the grasses. Wow. See... I wouldn't have thought of that. Thanks again!
Happy Easter Louise!!!
Lovely rhino.
I have watched this twice now. I am waiting, with bated breath, for the Patreon class!
Thanks so much Kileen.
Another fantastic video! Thanks for sharing..
Thank you Louise. I love your channel. So sorry that you got COVID. But I am so glad to have you back.
Another wonderful piece. I really loved how you explained the process and the use of other mediums. Certainly looking forward to trying this one. Thankyou so much for your work.
Rhino with only two colours wow! No wonder why this has such a beautiful colour harmony Louise
I’ve never tried soft press 🤔
Hello from Rhino land 🦏 South Africa 🇿🇦
I learn more every time I watch one of your wonderful videos!
So excited for this tutorial on Patreon! Just gorgeous!
A wonderful tutorial & painting Louise. Thank you so much. 😊
Such a beautiful painting! You have done it again...I absolutely love your paintings, you are very talented and inspiring. Thank you.
How amazing!
I love it!
I LOVE this one!! 💕
Fantastic, a rhino!! This was my "main" animal to take care of as a zookeeper! Yay Louise! 💜💛💚
Toujours aussi intéressant et formateur ! Merci pour vos vidéos inspirantes 👍
Wonderful video. Thanks for teaching us.
Stunning Louise 🥰
Love the way you did the grass👌
As always, Louise, fabulous🎨🤗.
Louise you are such a wonderful teacher and I always learn something new from each of your tutorials. I’m looking forward to this one on Patreon! And I love the texture of the paper. It almost looks like you’ve painted on linen!
Beautiful.
Love everything 💖
Beautiful
I love all your works, always beautiful❣
Beautiful texture to the soft press paper ! Lovely end result !
Amazing as always Louise! Love your work.
What a pretty painting!
Thank you for sharing
that is a wonderful looking rhino 😀
Thank you for this tutorial 🙏
What a beautiful painting! It reminds me of the elephant you painted (using cling film) which is my all time favourite of yours 😊 The paper sounds like something I would enjoy. I recently tried the Hahnemühle Bamboo and it gave me a similar impression of painting on a soft velvety fabric.
Very helpful tutorial. Thank you
I love this painting will def try!
This is so grand. A really stunning painting. Excellent job
ein grossartiges bild und viele anregungen... danke, jamie
Stunning painting. Thank you Louise.
My pleasure. Thanks Jena. 😊
Luv your recap at the end. So fun. Thanx for wonderful teaching skills and beautiful paintings.
Most entertaining and informative has always Louise 🙂
As always, informative and entertaining. The RINO took me by surprise. 🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks Roger.
Grateful
I have bought two eradicator brushes because of your recommendation - they work well if used carefully. I had not heard of soft press paper before but like the idea of using pencil alongside watercolour - Lovely 🥰 overall result. You are a great teacher - thank you.
Absolutely amazing Louise. 😍You are a real inspiration. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 💖💕💖💕💖💕
:17 seconds in. Loving this!!!
Plus, you look like my friend, Rhonda❤
Bravo. Ms. Louise. I am going to try using three colours!
Louise, this is the most beautiful painting. You definitely created one of your very best. Subject and background are fabulous!
Another fabulous watch. I always learn something so thank you Louise.
My pleasure. Thanks Michelle. 😊
Wow
Very good
Firstly, another gorgeous painting. I had not heard of that paper, but sounds like one I would try. Love the effects you get from your paints separating on the paper. And I agree that the addition of the colour watercolour pencils added to it, but I know I would have to stop myself from fussing too much.
What a great painting Louise Thank you for sharing all your tips xxx Happy Easter to you both xx
Thank you Amanda. 💕
Amazing painting Louise and I love the addition of the light blue watercolour pencil to add highlights and a bit of texture! I’ve not tried the soft pressed paper before but being that I like to add coloured pencil to some of my own paintings, I might have to try it out. Have a lovely weekend 😊💜
Thanks so much Sarah. If you do try it I hope you like it. Thank you- you too! 😊
I love Fabriano Xtra white soft pressed. It’s heavenly.
Thanks Sue. I love it too. 💚
Hi, thanks for this delightful lesson using 2 of my favourite colours. I appreciate how you describe the process, very helpful. I have tried painting a rhino and found it very difficult to achieve his character, found your video a joy to follow. Thanks again, have a good week and take care..
Thank you for this very educational video and I love the finished painting, very lively. I have used the Fabriano Artistico paper in the past and found it did not handle well the many large washes I used for my landscapes.
Magnificent painting. And the paper looks awesome. I really like Fabriano cold pressed and I was thinking of trying the soft version. Very appealing indeed
Thank you very much. It's definitely a paper I will use again and again.
You remain my favorite instructor artist on CZcams both for your beautiful paintings as well as your thorough explanation of your techniques. Your calm sweet voice is enjoyable to listen to and I'm happy I joined your patreon group. I enjoy wondering what you are thinking during your outtakes. LOL!
Thanks very much Carl for your lovely message.
Very pretty Rino. Happy Easter to you also. 😊💛
Thank you Sharon.You too!
Hi mam your paintings are amazing. Iam following you. Your explanation is really helpful. Thank you for making sucha a beautiful videos.
Oh Louise, you create such beauatiful art! tI seems so easy but it is not!!! Lovely - many years of learning and doing, I am sure. Thank you for sharing your techniques and your painting. Always, always beautiful
Thanks very much Deanna. 💕
Lovely! Reminds me of your elephant tutorial with the cling wrap, which would be fun to do with a rhino as well!
It does! Thanks Casandra.
I just ordered that Soft Press paper off of Jerry's! I saw that Fabriano had it and so I looked at the description and it said "Good for beginner's" which I am not, BUT it made me think the paper was very forgiving and easy to use and I really just wanted to try it TBH cuz it just sounded interesting. I love detail and using pencils/ink/etc along with my watercolors so I prefer hot press, but I also have a thing for granulating colors which just look better when you have the hills and valleys of cold press to really show them off. I figured this might be perfect for both! Smooth enough to use my other products on it, but just enough tooth to show off granulating colors! Ooooh, now I'm excited and can't wait for it to get here!!
I hope you enjoy painting on it Amy. Let me know what you think.
so amazing ^_^ sometimes less is more🤭👍
This is my favorite paper but it's little bit of challenge .
The paint seems to glisten
Beautiful painting Louise! I just heard about soft pressed paper not too long ago, It looks like a happy medium for someone like me! I love the texture from a cold pressed paper but I'd like to add a bit more fine detail. This paper has a beautiful fine texture that didn't distract from your painting.
Thanks Nathan. Yes exactly! It gives you the best of both worlds. I'll be using it again.
Thanks for showing me what I can expect from this paper. I'll have try it for sure! and the fact that the price is quite a bit less than my usual Saunders and Arches is also quite enticing!
😻😻😻❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏
Hi Louise, I am watching all your utube videos and really enjoying them. I have just started with water colours and am enjoying them. Unfortunately I am a pensioner so my resources are very limited. I am based in South Africa and have access to all our National Parks. I am a wildlife photographer. If you are ever looking for something in particular to paint please dont hesitate to ask. I can supply any images to you free if you wish. Thank you for your inspiring work and lessons.
Love your art work s lot.
May i ask, what blushes brand do you use ? Thanks
Hi Louise, I have recently subscribed to your Patreon classes. My expertise is with coloured pencils and pastels so I am looking forward to learning a new medium. My previous sole attempts at watercolour has been disaster. this is because I was trying to put in all the fur details etc. I like the idea of the freedom allowed in the watercolour painting that you have shown.
Can you please let me know where I can source the Fabriano soft press watercolour paper too as that is something I would like to try. I live in Perth WA. thankyou in advance.
I’ve been in love with the soft press paper for quite a while ,I don’t understand why you don’t hear about it very often. I have not been able to find it in blocks, does anyone know where I might find that ?
Hi mam iam watching your videos. They are amazing. Can you suggest which water colours are best. Tanku mam have a great day.
I love watching your videos and soft pressed Fabriano paper sounds great to use, I work with watercolor but also like to combine with pastels , I have tried different papers and really like Fabriano. Will it be possible to know where to purchase this paper please, as I live in England, UK and tried Amazon and Jackson Art supplies and had no luck finding soft pressed, only cold, hot and rough. Many thanks.
Louise....is a person able to use the watercolor pencil in any part of the painting and then still be able to enter it into the Transparent Watercolor Society yearly show in Kenosha, WI. ?
Does anyone know where to buy Fabriano soft press in Europe?
I dont seem to be able to find the paper you used
Are your Patrean videos more in depth and the utube same videos?
Hi Ann, yes absolutely. I take you through each painting step by step. The videos here on CZcams are just teasers.
Perfect. Thank you
Soft press? What's this?
Come to al Islam n success
Stunning Louise 🥰
