Drago (Dolph Lundgren) hones his physique with sophisticated gadgets while Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) chops wood and pulls sleds.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The third sequel to Sylvester Stallone's boxing blockbuster combines the ringside sports melodrama of the previous installments with the Cold War patriotism of the star/director's other motion picture series of the 1980s, the Rambo saga. Stallone is back as Rocky Balboa, the heavyweight champion of the world and now good friend of his one-time nemesis, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). Creed is brutally slaughtered in the boxing ring during a lop-sided exhibition match against the superhuman Russian boxer Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), an event that Rocky takes personally. Vowing revenge against Drago in the name of Creed and the United States, Rocky is invited to the Soviet Union for a matchup and hires Creed's former manager (Tony Burton) to get him in shape. While Drago trains using the latest technology, Rocky's ascetic preparations are a low-key affair of carrying logs up hills through knee-deep Russian snow.

Everyone thinks Regan ended the cold war, they were wrong. Rocky Balboa beating the Russian on Christmas day in 1985, that was the crack in the Iron Curtain which caused it to crumble.
The Cold War theme is really ridiculous today.
The Curtain didn't crumble, the communist block did. All because an Italian American faced with no easy way out, showed he had the eye of the tiger, and the burning heart to defeat the Soviet Giant.

I think the difference here is that Drago trained to reach his limit, while Rocky trained to exceed his.

With the training rocky did I believe he fortified his body to the point where he was able to take drago’s punches and counter with stronger punches than drago could throw, Drago’s body had not developed that stone hard body as rocky’s because he simply increased his strength in the gym, Hard labor often adds resistance to a person’s body, this is especially true for construction workers who have to handle different types of materials in different types of weather.

My fav part noone writes abt is when he helped the guy get the horse out. Even as a champion is still had a heart. That was nice of him.
I like how they showed Drago training
He isn't just some random big brute who's super strong all the time, he trains hard too (albeit with some drugs). It hypes up the fight more, knowing they're both working hard for this.

Favorite part when Rocky is doing pull ups at @1:30 mark and Duke gives him that sign of respect like Rocky really is built different. Duke raised and trained Apollo so he’s seen the best, but him giving that small acknowledgment in that moment just let’s you know Rocky was built different.
Since the first fight Duke feared Rocky because he would not stop. Rocky took the beating from the greatest Heavyweight Champion and all he wanted to do was prove to himself that he belonged in the ring with the champ. Duke made it clear that Rocky was built different and was dangerous. He worried for Apollo like a father would to his son.
Love how the American is training like the Russian actually would back then with the Russian training as though he was the American. That, in its essence, is the great paradox of Rocky 4. Yet with that said this training montage was & still is phenomenal in its power to inspire, to motivate & to mesmerize. Just astounding, & very transcendent for its time.

I remember after watching this as a kid I went out pulling sleds and lifting rocks. Turns out chopping trees down was a criminal offence though, especially as there was a group of greenpeace warriors living in a treehouse that day. I killed one tree and five people that day. Thanks Sly.

Amazing how I was a teenager and going through breakups and family problems! They these rocky movies specially rocky 4 kept my motivation and mental health in mind! To be fair, Rocky's extensive training under those conditions was enough to have him overcome Drago's seeming invinciblity and mammoth strength. He trained 4 times as hard as Drago and had very little breaks overall.
Yeah this montage gives me the vibe of "you train smart, but I train hard". Not that Drago is not training hard both train hard but Rocky trains harder and the fancy stuff is not enough to make up for it.
The Rocky 4 training montage is by far my favorite.

Drago was simulating suffering, while Rocky was feeling that in a natural way, doing more natural exercises, that's why Rocky became stronger mentally and physically than the russian guy, so he got the crowd and the christmas night. he's the real boss
Every time I go snowshoeing during this pandemic. I don’t want to expose myself in the gyms that are rarely open. I think of this scene. You don’t need fancy equipment or machines to exercise.

Made sense for Rocky to train with purpose something that Drago was obviously lacking during the entire fight until the last round. Drago was fighting with pride and that only fleshes out the purpose for so long. Its a great lesson even in life
