    "A smooth, German-style lager with slightly sweet roasted malts, notes of caramel, toffee, and a distinct noble hop character with subtle piney citrus. It ends with a crisp finish that makes you want another."

    Hi Jay, I’m 19 days into a 30 day cleanse that includes eating only clean, healthy foods and no alcohol. Your reviews are really helping me through this and to reach my goal. When I watch your reviews I feel like I’m hanging out with a friend having a cold bottle of frosty suds, but actually I’m having a Perrier. Thanks for your reviews and your very informative style.

    Glad you got around to reviewing "The Remastered Boston Lager" Ron. I`ve been drinking the original since the early 90`s. I love the Remastered version! I also enjoy the dry finish on this one. It`s delicious, and easy drinking for sure! Cheers, from Joe in North Carolina.

    Seems like the ethics of brewing would be against remastering a long appreciated classic but it's been through many remasters lol

    I went on a brewery tour in Boston, and asked the guide about what they did to change the beer. She said all they changed is the way they get the pH balance. Something to do with a biological approach vs. using brewing salts, or something like that.

    Agree with your assessment that they "tweaked" it but it does seem just a fraction lighter and less robust than it used to be. I have had the remastered on draft 2 or 3 times at a place in Chesapeake VA. Still tastes good & holds very similar flavor profile as before but seems but less robust. If go onto BA and read some reviews, you will see regular Sam drinkers (I was only occasional) detail the altered product better than I can. In my mind the old rule "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" probably would apply here.

    • @ronaldtheriot

    I just had this. My impression is I'm glad they didn't make it less good lol. But i think i used to get a bit more hop aroma with the old version. I read that the difference is they used what seems to be the german sauergut technique, where they add soured wort (prepared before hand) to bring the mash ph into proper range, as opposed to using modern acids like lactic or phosphoric. It's supposed to yield a cleaner tasting beer and perhaps leave it clearer without needing filtration, so maybe now they're not putting it through a filter before packaging. This beer is certainly still excellent, but i'm not sure if it's better.

  • @JD-qh3sd
    @JD-qh3sd Před 9 měsíci +1

    Interesting. I tried it for the first time today and found it noticeably less flavorful than the Samuel Adams Boston Lager I have known for decades. Greatly disappointing. It's almost like they tried to blunt the distinctive flavor to appeal to a broader customer base that finds lighter, less flavorful beer more "approachable," whatever that means.

    • @ronaldtheriot

    I was waiting for your review, Jay. It seems, as others have said, slightly less "dark malty" and a little more clean. I think it's not worse, and maybe even better, but I was not a massive fan of the original, so those who do love it may be a little more disappointed.

    • @ronaldtheriot
      @ronaldtheriot  Před rokem +2

      It's certainly generated lots of controversy and commotion, Jeremy. I don't know if it will end up helping Boston Beer Co., though.

    :29 Easier drinking? Hmm... Isn't that the market SA Light Lager is suppose satisfy? I'm drinking this remastered version and its real good, ill buy again, but it's obvious that the flavor intensity has been turned down to a 7 from the original.

      @ronaldtheriot  Před rokem

  • @BillWilsonBG
    @BillWilsonBG Před rokem

    I never drank it that much, and I am not the greatest descriptor of taste, but in my opinion I would definitely say it's a downgrade. Lighter in color, more mild in taste. I don't remember the Remastered that well since I had it only once and it takes me a long time to really know something by heart, but it wasn't as flavorful as the original. I wouldn't say it's bad, but it's enough of a downgrade to make me not want to buy it. With prices the way they are, I definitely could see myself buying Boston Lager more since a lot of the imported 4 packs of beer have gone up 20-25% around here, but this modification makes it from a good, mild beer, to a bland one for me, which at the price point makes it a hard sell. A shame too since it's the only Samuel Adams Beer that was in 12 packs year round that I would say I enjoyed.

    • @ronaldtheriot
      @ronaldtheriot  Před rokem

      I saw no need to change it, but my impression is that it is such a minor tweak as to be virtually a non change.

    Boston Lager has always been my favorite American Lager. They usually brew it w Krausening like Anchor Steam but now they are using Biological acidification which is also a German brewing method. BL is a victim of its own success. Its somewhat of an anomaly of a beer and that keeps it interesting.
