  • Hello friends ! I’ve taken quite a long hiatus, but I’m back!
    When I was at ANEXT2015, I had over half a dozen people ask me how I made my Gambol Shroud.
    So..here’s a little tutorial of how I made my Blake Belladonna cosplay from RWBY! This tutorial was filmed in the course of 2 summers. Summer 2014 was when most of the costume was made. Summer 2015 was when I made the weapon + sheath and remade parts of my improved Blake 2.0 top :3

    Note: Though I wish I was, I am NOT studying fashion design in school. Sewing/cosplay making is just a hobby, so anything I do or say in this video cannot be treated as a golden rule. If you have a better way of sewing something/making something, then go for it!
    This video is merely just a step by step guide of how I managed to finish Blake’s costume ^^;… I hope this video at least helps someone~

    Note that the yardage is an approximation. This will vary depending on your margin of error and your weight/height. For reference, I'm about 5'4" and a U.S. size small. The sword is 37″ and my sheath is 30″

      I didn't do anything fancy! I just folded the raw edges and sewed a straight stitch on the outside. The pieces of the shorts are double layered with a main white fabric and a lining fabric. I zigzag stitched those layers together. So, that's the other stitch you see in the video :)

    nice job, I was wandering if you made the weapon template yourself or you got it from some where. I am planning to made the sword myself so I thought I might ask

    • @RainingCation
      @RainingCation  Před 9 lety

      +Scarrlet Witch I drew the weapon template myself by using pencil to sketch it out first and then tracing over my final pattern with Copic Markers. The pattern is on regular 8.5" x 11" paper that I taped together and then cut out with scissors. When drawing out the pattern, I was looking at weapon reference images on Google. (I just googled "Blake Belladonna Gambol Shroud".) This blog was also super helpful for closer up reference pics: herotetsuro.blogspot.com/2013/06/rwby-gambol-shroud-variant-ballistic.html
      Hope that helps. Good luck!

Unfortunately, I noticed the link for the shorts pattern doesn't work anymore and that is the only part I have left. I've looked around but the other shorts I've found just don't look as good. Is there anyway you could post a summarized version of how the pattern was made? It would be really helpful. Love the video, your cosplay is awesome. :)

    • @RainingCation
      @RainingCation  Před 8 lety

      ing o+Taylor A I'm glad that I was able to help you out :). Ahh sorry! I know the link doesn't work because the original blogger who made the post ended up deleting it :(. However, I just found a similar replacement link for how to make a shorts pattern. The updated link is in the description box, but I"ll also put it here for convenience: the31woman.blogspot.com/2011/08/dulce-taylor-basic-shorts-pattern.html
      Alternatively, you always just use a pair of shorts you own that fit you, flip it inside out, lay out one side flat & trace around it w/seam allowance. In my experience, I find that works better than pre-made patterns because you're using something that you know already fits you :). Hope that helps and good luck with the rest of your cosplay!

    • @RainingCation
      @RainingCation  Před 8 lety

      I used a plain cotton no stretch fabric for her top. Non stretchy material is a lot easier to sew for beginner cosplayers! But, looking back, I would recommend you using a slightly stretchy cotton or knit fabric just so it's easier to slip in and out of the top.

It's exactly like Blakes but without the triangles. I have white shorts that can be modified. Boots aren't too much of a problem, and Amazon has like 10 dollar curly long hair wigs. The bow is easy enough to make. The sword and sheath will take me 5ever so I'm gonna work on that with my cosplay group. Who are also going as the others from Rwby

      It can be whatever you want it to be! You can use 100 % cotton or any other fabric type of your choice. I just happened to use a cotton poly blend because those materials are easy to sew and that's what my local story carried!

      A) I know that cosplay can be an expensive hobby, but you can set your own budgets and save up money if you really want to do it! I also always make cosplays under a budget and Blake was no exception. Don't let the material cost scare you away!
      B) Don't be afraid to try! You can make cosplays, no matter what your skill level is. Practice makes perfect and I believe in you =). I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have! Feel free to pm me here or on Facebook. Good luck, my friend !

    Hey, I've been planning on making this cosplay, and I have a huge question. How or what did you use to make the shorts stay on?

    • @RainingCation
      @RainingCation  Před 8 lety

      +Elizabeth Olson The shorts are pretty well fitted to my body, so just like any other pair of well-fitted pants, they will naturally stay on your hips! There was no need for any elastic or hook & eyes. The material I used is not stretchy, so I get in and out of the shorts with the two zippers on the front.
      If your shorts are falling off your hips then your pattern might be slightly too big and you need to readjust it to make it a bit smaller. Try using a pair of shorts that already fit you pretty well and trace around it + seam allowance for your pattern.

    • @RainingCation
      @RainingCation  Před 8 lety

      +Dominga “Happy Ice Cream 19” Chamorro I did not use a pre-made template or stencil. I made my own pattern by taping together regular 8.5x11" paper and looking up references of her weapon online. Then I drew the shape of her weapon by hand with pencil and then traced over it with marker. This link herotetsuro.blogspot.com/2013/06/rwby-gambol-shroud-variant-ballistic.html was really helpful for reference pictures. The weapon cost me less than $50. I did have a lot of things at home that I didn't have to buy though (i.e, paint, gesso, sealer, etc.)

      @RainingCation  Před 8 lety

      +Shawna Thunderbolt I made the paper pattern on my own by taping together pieces of paper, drawing it with pencil, and then tracing over the pencil with marker. When doing this, I just looked at a lot of reference pictures. There is a link in the description box under "Useful Links" that shows pretty useful reference photos by another cosplayer who also made Gambol shroud!
      As for length of the sword, I tried to take into account my height so that the proportions would look accurate. I'm 5'4" without heels, but with my heels I'm about 5'6" ish. I also took into account the size constraint of my Elmer's foam board because I needed that to make my sheath. I bought the largest Elmer's board (which is 32" by 40"). So, my sheath was about 30" and my sword was 37". Hope that helps =)

      @RainingCation  Před 8 lety

      +AbbieGoCrAzY It really depends on your skill level for sewing time. I was still learning a lot of things when I made Blake, so much of my time was spent compensating for trial and error when patterning. (I remade the vest twice.) I also sew godly slow because I film at the same time. My best advice is to try to give yourself at least a week to complete it so you don't feel like you're rushed. You still have 3 weeks left til AnimeNext. Good luck!! :)

      +RainingCation also the black vest is a bit confusing 😂😂

    • @RainingCation
      @RainingCation  Před 8 lety

      +Thecatgirl2462 I made a lot of Blake's patterns from scratch so it takes a lot of trial and error to get the perfect fit. For patterning, I generally use clothes that already fit me and trace around it. I pattern by taping together normal 8.5 x 11" paper to form one large sheet. Then, I folded my fitted croptop in half and traced around it. Afterwards, I add my 5/8" standard seam allowance. When I cut out the crop top, I folded the white fabric in half and placed my pattern on that fold and cut it out. ( If this concept is confusing, it's like drawing half a heart on a folded piece of paper and cutting it out. Doing so will result in a full heart when you cut and unfold AND it will be perfectly even.) This will be the back of the croptop. The front is a little more complicated to pattern, but it's made of 3 parts. ( If you look closely at Blake's top you'll notice there are 3 seam lines there.) Once you've cut those three parts out, sew them together as I stated in the video. Then sew the front and back together. Blake was my first cosplay I made and finished! She was a lot of work, but it was a really good learning experience. Good luck!

    • @RainingCation
      @RainingCation  Před 8 lety

      +Rwby Memelord It depends on your sewing and weapon ability ^^; I'm still a novice so I did a lot of things over because I wasn't happy with how it came out/found better methods through trial and error. I worked on her cosplay very sporadically throughout two summers (2014, 2015) so I honestly have no time estimate for the sewing.
      I completed the weapon in 2.5 weeks, working about 6 ish hours a day. Mind you, I work really slowly so this will depend on how quickly or experienced you are as well! Over 50% of my total work time was dedicated to making a pattern that I"m satisfied with (for both sewing and prop making). Good luck with your male version of Blake!
