  • Spruce Creek is a fly-in community located in Daytona, Florida. It is a residential airpark, where cars and trucks give way to planes, and you can taxi right up to your house. Former residents include John Travolta, who owned a house here and kept his Boeing 707 and Gulfstream 2 here.
    I was lucky to have the opportunity to fly in and out of Spruce Creek onboard a Grumman G44 Widgeon, an amazing experience. We taxied right out of the garage of the aircraft's owner, and took off for a short flight before coming back and landing, taxying back to the house outside people's houses before parking right back up in the garage!

      +Infinity Plus Yep can't disagree there, I think the noise would get a bit annoying after a while though :)

    Very cool video. This reminds me of the videos my Grandpa shot while in Talkeetna, Alaska in the summer flying old float planes from lake to lake. He also had stunning views of the glaciers and other places they flew over with trained instructors who knew the area well. A must for all aviation lovers.

    Lmao; I was in that community delivering food the other day and got turned around and ended up almost on the run way. I wasn't expecting to run into a freaking runway in a neighborhood.

      +WeFlyEMA Thanks! There are quite a few places on the airpark you can fly with, this is a guy who does experience flights and floatplane training in the G44 and you can book it, turn up and fly with him :)

      +Henning I Yep it was pretty close! We saw him a way out and he popped up on the mini TCAS transponder, so we altered our path slightly to avoid! They airspace around there is very busy with light aircraft!

    Wow. A 707? I'm sure the residents enjoyed that one :) I'm surprised the runway is long enough for it.

    Does this aircraft have IO-470 or O-470? I’m assuming O-470 since the props are going much faster hence the higher takeoff pitch

    Cool video but those homes are so close to the field. My neighbour's lawnmower annoys me, imagine someone starting up a plane a hundred meters from your house. I couldn't take it, and I love planes.

    • @noelphilips
      @noelphilips  Před 8 lety

      +Jillaroo79 Yep I guess you have to be pretty invested in your love of aviation! I read that the reason John Travolta left was that the residents were getting fed up with the noise of his 707 or G2 taking off every day!

    Rather close 1:00-high head-on traffic there at about 05:35... what, about 200 feet difference? eeks!
    My Dad would have liked to lived in a place like this... but he loved open spaces more... he considered putting a grass strip on his property (100 acres), but it would have been too short for many of his projects, and no good (level) access from his workshop. I assume there are plenty of Experimental builders there at Spruce Creek?
    He built a YAK-11 from basically junk, as it sat since decommissioned and disassembled after WWII by Turkish air force . He "slightly" upgraded it to an R1830-75 (forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?39869-Yak-11-in-Kansas-City-(2005-Zombie-thread).
    Also rebuilt a "Casa" HA-200 Saeta... which ended up being the biggest discouragement in his life. First cross-country flight after all certifications, heading to Sun-N-Fun, had a fuel transfer failure down around Tennessee, one tip-tank full, other empty... had to practically fly it into the ground to keep it level... 120kt... bounced (of course), folded one main gear, slid sideways to a stop in the grass. Successful landing... since he and my uncle both walked away unscathed. Plenty of damage, but repairable... until the small airport owner decided on his own to drag it further away from the hard surface strip... buckling the fuselage... all done.
    He had many other projects, but these were his last two, and most important to him. He'd had probably 15+ V35's and a couple Deb's... loved them, rebuilt them for resale. Various and sundry Cessna's: 140, 150, 210, 337D; an Aero Commander 680 (gas HOG!), and his original 'love'... his Beech Staggerwing... Red/black. Built many homebuilts... 2 Steen Skybolts, a Smith Mini, Cassut racer, oh my... I can't remember them all... lots of good memories.

    • @noelphilips
      @noelphilips  Před 8 lety

      We were fairly close, when flying in light aircraft I've been pretty close to other aircraft a few times, as you'll know so long as you both follow the rules of right of way it's usually non-eventful :) Sounds like you have a lot of good memories with your Dad :)

  • @DAV632

    Interesting clip but ... PUHHLLEEAASEE the person filming these types of clips remember every jerk of your wrist, every twist and drop and angle change in multiplied when you watch it on a small screen. One goes from watching an interesting clip to reaching for their gravol. Also when 3/4s of the screen is firewall - too high to see the instruments and too low to see out the widow ('cept for a sliver) you might as well record the sound and leave the cam in your lap!
