What it was like being on Casablanca Records. The Angel live show. His invite to audition for KISS, replacing Ace Frehley, and exactly what happened during that audition. Even what character he jokingly mentioned to KISS he might become. Lots of KISS, Angel and rock n roll talk this week.

I really like how he mentions that while they're following was not huge, the followers that angel had were extremely loyal and passionate about the band and the music. and the fact that Punky said he's grateful for that tells a lot about his character. Very cool down to earth guy.

Very nice interview. I love to hear Punky talk about the '70s. One thing I always like about Angel was that they loved and appreciated their fans. You didn't see a lot of arrogant behavior. Those guys are survivors. Angel had such a mystique and mystery about the band. So great to finally hear Punky tell all these great stories.

Incredible show! Caught a guitar pick at that show, which I still have! I dug listening to your conversation with Punky. Interesting guest. Great guitarist. Seems like a really cool guy. Brought back a lot of great memories. Thanks boys.

This interview is a great testimony as to what a wonderful guitar player Punky is. Despite the questionable production of the Angel albums, people still loved Punky's guitar solos. It's a shame they weren't able to pick their own producer or produce their own recordings. Still they should be very proud and they have nothing to be ashamed of.

Think Jerry Garcia said it best when he was asked about people liking their music:
“We're like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like licorice really like licorice.”
That can be said about many of the fans of many different bands...including KISS. It is hard to have an objective discussion on music as it is hard to overcome our subjective opinions due to the emotional and visceral response that music can bring to those who listen.
Stumbled across the new Jeff Beck Album "Loud Hailer" today (I know it is not KISS related, but it is just adding to Mark's point about chocolate. This is an exotic dark chocolate with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, smoked Serrano peppers and a hint of cilantro). and would have to say if Tommy should listen to any Jeff Beck Album, this is it as there are vocals throughout. I cannot believe that a 72 year old man has this much modern musical sensibility. Rosie Bone's vocals definitely adds a different dimension to his music....and he has not lost one bit of his chops. Try it out Michael, Tommy, and Mark as I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Can easily see a Grammy nomination coming for something off this Album.

A Really Really good episode this week Guys!! I cannot emphasize that enough! Punky was a absolutely terrific guest. I really love His new album and I am so glad He is back in the game again. Such a terrific guitar player and He seemed so nice and down to earth during the interview. His playing, look and stage posturing has been such a major influence on so many Bands especially in the 80's. A true Rock star and a great musician, Mark I always heard Blackmore in His playing too especially in His new single "Straight Shooter" that has a really nice Rainbow feel to it. He's got a really good singer in His Band! I totally would have loved for Him to take over after Ace, He has a similar classic style of playing and shares alot of the same influences plus His stage performances would have fit in with KISS's love for showmanship! Out of KISS'S roster of opening acts I would have to stay in the 70's and go with Blue Oyster Cult and Cheap Trick as a alternative for B.O.C. I would love to see SWEET (they might fit in better with Cheap Trick). Imagine hearing "Windy City","Southern Girls",and "Detroit Rock City " all in one show! Great show Guys!!!!! AAAAA++++!!!!!!! -Andy.😈

Great show as always. I haven't heard Punky's new CD but I am going to check it out because of this episode. Would Punky have worked in KISS? Hard to know for sure, but I would have loved to have seen it. Even though Angel was popular, they weren't popular enough for it to be a factor keeping him out of KISS. I also agree with Mark that the first three Angel albums are the best. After that, it just got too generic for me.
My dream farewell KISS tour line-up:
    KISS
    Cheap Trick
    Uriah Heep
Cheap Trick is a no-brainer. If it hadn't been for KISS, I would have never discovered Cheap Trick. They are forever linked in my mind. I add Uriah Heep for two reasons: (1) KISS opened for Heep in 74-75 and Heep opened for KISS in 76-77. (2) My first KISS show was with Heep opening in January of 77, so they hold a special place for me. Not only was it my first KISS show, it made me a Heep fan for life. Plus, they are still active today, although only Mick Box remains from the 70s era of the band.

Ace's laser shooting guitar has become somewhat mythical among the KISS ARMY. I was fortunate to see it used on night one of the Dynasty tour in Lakeland, Fl. That said, have you considered John Elder Robinson for the show? This is the engineer that built the laser guitar that Ace only used once or twice on the Dynasty tour. He also built the Rocket shooters and the New York Groove lighted front panel guitar.I have chatted with him back and forth regarding the laser guitar, he's accesible and friendly. It sounds as if there was a mutual respect between KISS and ANGEL Whether it was the right decision or not, you have to respect Punky for his loyalty to his current band members at the time (rather than just up and leave to join KISS). It sounds as if deep down, Paul and Gene were hurt that Punky didn't jump at the chance to join KISS. Usually, under that anger is some sadness or hurt. But again, I have to respect Punky's loyalty to his original band members at that time.

Talking about the farewell tour i would have rather just have KISS play and have it be a longer set with songs they rarely played live. When i saw the farewell tour here in the Twin Cities i wasn't upset about how they were onstage it was just another show and nothing special about it for me. Plus for me it would be very hard for them to top my first KISS show which was back December 1976 still the best KISS show ever

I agree with Mark; however, I think "sophisticated " is the wrong term. I think "technical" or "technician" may be what you guys are shooting for. For example, Vinnie Vincent is a more technically accomplished guitarist than Ace, but I prefer Ace's playing. Aerosmith may be more technically proficient as a band, but people may like Kiss more. Being technical does not equate to superior art. Just examine Y. Malmsteen.

Cheap Trick and Blue Oyster Cult. There is a difference between sophisticated and complicated. Usually simple songs are more sophisticated.Of course there are pseudo intellectual bad science fiction songs.Kiss' new stage ...have you seen it? Nothing. Tommy singing Shock Me is bullshit! Eric singing Beth is stupid! They seem bored and distracted.Ticket sales? WE will see.I do like to know about ticket sales because Kiss is my team.Although,I think the whole army thing is dumb. I get the feeling Punky thinks Bon Jovi is great. I hate Bon Jovi all the way.SUCKS!!!! Many CHICKS love Rob Zombie; I know this because I worked in a strip club and all the strippers loved Rob Zombie. Kiss right now seem bored and even depressed. Damn let's do something because they becoming boring.I love Kiss and want them to be creative and imaginative again. Punky, you were never on the same level as Gene or Paul.

I worked in a strip club and got free drinks and unfortunately free medications. They all liked Kiss too. Insane.

  • @UnderSprayedWhiteSkies

Big Angel fan, but honestly, Punky's CD is absolutely horrible, embarrassingly bad.
