Dear Subaru, if you have to have an emergency release procedure like this in place, perhaps you need to reconsider the system's design and operation. Thank you for not being in the aviation industry.
Sooooooo much better to see your video than to figure out what the manual is saying. THANK YOU!!! My brake gets stuck about every three weeks. I simply unplug the battery... wait a minute... hook it back up, and it's fine. Everything is a computer these days. From our cars, to our watches, and almost to our shoes! And when you have a computer problem, the first thing to do is reboot. ATB from Colorado!
i was going to try that until i watched this video. glad to know that unplugging the battery works as well. if after subaru 'fixes' this, i run into the issue again, i will try that as it sounds easier if i am not in a place where it would be easy to perform the fix from the video.
❤👍🤩 This post helped So Much, as I was stuck in the Grocery Store Parking Lot at ~11pm!!! I'd just filled up the back with ~ 5 bags of groceries!!! Well, I didn't unplug the battery but I did "Turn Off the Car for ~5 min" when I turned it back on the Brake had come Un-Stuck!!! Hooray!!! Yes, Re-Booting was the answer!!! Horrible that this happens to U often!!! Thx again!!! 😘
Thanks for your input bc I'm at a new job and it's pouring rain after hurricane Beryl! I don't want to touch the battery in this weather!@@constanceinberkeleyca8685
Very helpful, but there was one important omission: The 200 turns of the release bolt need to be CLOCKWISE, which is the opposite of the counterclockwise direction in which you first have to turn the plastic cover in order to get it off.
Ridiculous that Subaru would produce such an atrocity that would require a manual tool and procedure to fix the crap that they should have fixed before manufacturing the vehicles. I had my brake regulator replaced, which cost over $700, and the new one is doing the same thing now! It's almost as bad as their being so stupid, they don't have a temperature gauge on the dash, which cost me thousands of dollars for a head gasket replacement that should never have happened. But on your end, GREAT VIDEO! Thank you so much.
thanks. great video. i have a 2012 outback that had the parking brake stuck. first time i watched it, i thought i heard to turn the the relase counter-clockwise but after rewatching, i heard you correctly to turn the white protective plug counter-clockwise to remove the plug. i read the owners manual and the procedure is in the manual. they have a warning in bold letters to not turn the release nut(not the protective cover) counter-clockwise. the release nut must be turned clockwise. the first 175 or so turns, it felt like i was not doing anything but i eventually felt resistance to turning the nut. i actually checked that the parking brake was still engaged after about 150 turns(by starting the car and trying to move in reverse. sure enough, it was still engaged. after i felt the resistance i turned it until turning the nut felt difficult. now the brake is released though the brake light is still on. i just thought i would add this comment for clarity but your video was well done. thank you again. now i can drive the car to subaru to get it repaired.
Thank you for the video!! Instructions in the owners manual weren’t very clear. I watched your video as I was doing it! I got stuck in a parking lot with my son today! I had the recall done on the e-brake 2 months ago...time to bring it back.
I had lifted the rear passenger side to remove/repair a tire. When I put the car back down I had the stuck parking brake problem and thought I would have to insert and do the 200 turns solution. Instead, I lifted the car up again, tuned the key (electric power only) stepped on the brake, and the parking brake then released. I believe that this stuck brake problem happens when the park brake is on, and there is pressure in different directions against each tire as it sits on the ground. relieve the pressure (jack up one tire) and the stuck parking brake will release.-Just a theory
If you’re stuck in a parking lot like me, just keep pulling the E-brake release WHILE shifting and backing out. It will automatically shut off the E brake that you accidentally hit with your leg.
After emergency parking brake would not release, I viewed this a couple of times, then when I went through each step I was happy that everything was just as described and shown on the video, all except for the final step. Emergency parking system would not release or turn off. Looking to have this pos 2013 Subaru Outback towed somehow if I can find some tow company that knows how to get the pile of garbage towed without harming it you know, since wheels won't turn. Also, learned that Subaru has a service bulletin and extended warranty to address the blatant failure in auto engineering. Stuck. 40k miles since new and stuck.
Thank you so much for this! My parking brake was not stuck - my shifter was stuck in park and I could not get my key to turn in the ignition (either way - to get it out, or to start the car) - it's that same tool that you use to release the shift lever and I found that tool thanks to your video. Thanks!
A friend told me about this... then I read the *Manual*... yup... 200 turns. I'm just imaging the engineers at Subaru rolling on the Floor Laughing at the poor schmuck stuck in the snow bank, trying to get this tool in the hole and turn it 200 times!!!
wow another bad idea - I have a 2014 and the manual release is inside, but still 200 or so turns - ugh a very bad idea it is. thankfully there is a tool in a pouch and I have seen folks use a drill to aid it moving it faster. But NEVER was this an emergency brake!
What is the main fix beside releasing that unit by turning it 200 times? What parts need replacement? Would it be the main e-brake unit? Or something else like brake cables?
Hi There , thanks for the video, so I can use this method if I want to do the rear electric parking brake disk replacement without using the scanner on my 2019 Forester. What is in the tip of that release tool, is it allen key?or this is only if parking brake got stuck?
I released the electronic parking brake on my 2013 Outback using the manual. Then I watched your video which is very helpful. - After the electronic parking brake is manually released, is the car still safe to drive. My car is an automatic, so don't really need a parking brake. Thanks.
thanks....what a crappy car....do you have a video for when the engine light, traction control light, abs light all comes on and the regular brake like stays flashing>??. i will check out this stupid electronic parking brake since you made a great video
Subaru...As for me I am off to self remove a tooth ground out of my mouth by my hand and an exact match to my old tooth as a new cap casted , then ground when using a hand held mirror because it is easier than this E-Brake release procedure.Yes I am speechless from both procedures efforts.
I HATE the electronic parking brake (NO emergency brake?) extremely unsafe! :O that is the biggest complaint I have about the modern Subaru cars. also have a 2019 crosstrek for my wife and it has an emergency brake :) plus better mpg and a fun car to drive. Subaru should never have an electronic parking brake it is unsafe and fails when there is no power [DC] an emergency brake is for Emergency use when all else fails to stop you. [just keep the cables in good shape to be safe] the E-brake can only be operated manually with great difficulty (try operating it during an emergency, the port is behind the drivers seat and operated with an alen wrench [which is hidden in a bag] the E parking brake is NOT an emergency brake
Terrible video because you didn't say which way to turn the tool 200 times. Is it clockwise or counterclockwise??? You did say to unscrew the protective cap counterclockwise, but said nothing about the brake.
Dear Subaru, if you have to have an emergency release procedure like this in place, perhaps you need to reconsider the system's design and operation. Thank you for not being in the aviation industry.
😆 🤣 😂 😹
OMG I was thinking "Subaru! Seriously!!???"

I did this and it worked! Now I can safely drive to my mechanic. Thank you!
This did not work for me. The brake was still stuck.

Also, you will hear the brake gradually releasing as you turn the knob clockwise.
Thank you , I forgot to mention that !
What happen if only releases only 3 the front driver side got stock, can you tell me what’s the next step to do?
@@gladiatorxxx7520 awww man!!!...what a nightmare....these cars should be banned from the usa
Idk about banning ALL of 'em. Wife has a 2010 Legacy sedan. 185k miles and never a problem out of it. It's been very dependable.

Thanks for this vid. It was a service to me.
IT IS A FANTASY SUBARU DECIDED TO DO THIS, WHAT A SIMPLE HAND E-BRAKE LIKE IN THE PAST?
Very good. thank you.

Which direction do you turn the thing 200 times?! Haha
Clockwise according to the factory service manual
@@stevenjulie4698
200 full turns? So 360° * 200? Thanks!
You are right about the manual instructions 😫🤭
Thank you. My daughter’s car. I put on the brake but then,,, Good presentation
I was wondering what that rod was for!
So, is it CLOCKWISE OR COUNTER CLOCKWISE? ALSO, WHEN YOU DO THE 200 TIMES, IS THE EMERGENCY BREAK DISABLED UNTIL YOU TURN IT BACK?
Bring back the parking brake lever! Electronic sucksssssss!
This has to the greatest, clearest and most helpful on you tube ever.

Turn which way after protective layer if off
Thanks
Thank you! ,the video is clear
Thank u very helpful if I have a problem
Thank you for the insight
Great vid thank you
should i tell people that doing this PERMANENTLY DISABLES AND BREAKS THE UNIT..so he just broke his hahahaha
Yup I just disabled my unit. Anyone know what that unit is called so I can replace it?
Nice work!!
What year suburu is this disaster parking brake installed in

very informative
Another reason why I won't buy an Outback.
Well my tool is missing.. awesome
Thank you!
Do you turn the tool 200 times to the left, or right???
Clockwise according to the factory service manual
Thankyou!!
Thank you
..
Thank You
What is the purpose of doing this? Sorry newbie
Lets put this dumb idea of a handbrake on the side of the road in the dark! Subaru will never darken my driveway ever!

Check it in the air. If the brakes are holding it and u got it in the air it wouldn't budge lol
Or!, just disconnect the battery, wait a minute. And reattach. Done.
The engine can easily overcome the parking brake. The brake will quickly fade out. Just drive it.
I really hate it when I offer to help someone
Then find out this bullshit
200 times!?!? Fml

Too long and very tiresome. I fall asleep 3-4 times during this 'lecture'.
