Season 5 Episode 9 'Last Resort'
A man (Željko Ivanek) takes over Cuddy's office and holds House, Thirteen, and several patients hostage, demanding a diagnosis. To make sure that the doctors are not giving him poor treatment, he forces Thirteen to act as a guinea pig for his treatments. House has to find a way to end the standoff before Thirteen becomes seriously ill, and before SWAT start their assault.

For those of you who want to know; The diagnosis was Melioidosis, caused by infectious bacteria he got in Florida, he had never mentioned the trip to any doctor, and therefore it was missed in screening.
See, this is why you tell your doctors any recent change in your routine....

im guessing alot of americans wouldnt consider florida tropical though, im just guessing there though because im from england though
Florida is not in the tropical zone, but it could still be called tropical because it lies square in the middle of the subtropics.

The SWAT team literally heard that nurse tell Cuddy that the guy doesn’t have his gun anymore and yet nobody moves in to apprehend him 🤔
All for the plot
Would you, as a SWAT member, put yourself and others in lethal risk, based on what a nurse may have seen?
Joe Zombie well a logical person would have asked the nurse for specifics and she would have told them he laid into the machine which would give me all the clearance I need
@@nanaki5308 And thats why you are not swat, i mean no offense, im not either, but normal and untrained people tend to crumb under pressure of extreme situations, you cant trust any of their senses, thats why ocular witness for example, its the worse and lowest kind of evidence, you cant bet your life on a random nurse description, who might be wrong and you might end up getting shot
Joe Zombie considering in that episode the SWAT move in while the guy’s gun is right at Thirteen’s head, I dunno about that one.
The man that suggested he “take it out on the doctors” deserves a swift kick to the balls
doctors are usually healthy and the patients are sick so it's a bigger risk for the patients
Why? It's every man for himself at that point.
They deserve it more than random sick folks
@@ClubPenguinMaster88 the people who try to save those random sick people deserve to be shot more than the random sick people? why?
@@kage3587 Because the sick people are completely irrelevant to him. He has no reason to care about them, no reason to harm them, compared to doctors who have been unable to diagnose him. "Taking it out on the doctors" was supposed to be getting an injection, in fact, it's an implication that House would rather risk a patient than one of his doctors.
Neither is fair, one is more reasonable than the other.
House is so obsessed with his mysteries he's a willing hostage. Lol.
Honestly lmao
@@TheSyngirl Well house doesn’t care whether he lives or dies. He’s literally just here for the puzzles. It makes him a more interesting character really. He’ll solve it even if he dies for the right answer.
@@ladycarmillasanguina Oh House, your Sherlock Holmes is showing again! XD
@@ladycarmillasanguina You’re wrong, watch 3:24 - 3:27. When the gun is cocked and directed towards Dr. House, you can see him fear for his life. So yes, he does care if he lives or dies. At this point he doesn’t know the extent of the mans illness. As the episode progresses, the mystery of it captivates him, once it captivates him, he doesn’t care if he or anyone else (in the room) dies.
He really needed a therapist and a psychiatrist giving the guy his gun back was unbelievably stupid.
3:39 "What are you doing? He didn't do anything." That's one of the rare times House shows genuine concern for someone.
Too bad that brief moment was all he could muster in this episode because he had no problems with turning an underaged boy a hostage again after that CT scan.

Hostage: He gave up his gun!
Guard: So he’s unarmed?
House: Well yes, but actually no
House lowered the guy's risk of getting shot by letting SWAT think he's unarmed.
@@Ole_Rasmussen Wait wut?
I mean if the SWAT thinks he's unarmed but then bursts in there and they find he is still armed wouldn't that make it more likely to be shot?
Grand Meister they see him with a gun they will shoot, plus there's cameras everywhere. they can see exactly which way he's facing, who the gun's pointed at, etc. they could easily get him as long as there's no more hostages. and he would've had house's trust bc house gave him back his gun.

That was his girlfriend and she was pregnant
@@zainabaria6838 yea I was just about to say “isn’t she the one who’s pregnant?”
This episode was actually freaking intense. And what gets me is House literally still poking fun into the guy and not fearing that he pulls the trigger.
that's because house doesn't care whether he lives or dies. He's literally just doing the doctor thing as a hobby because if he didn't the only thing he'd have left is sitting at home watching friends. All through the series it shows he's actually struggling with serious issues psychologically and covers it up with his wit.
House only cares about solving puzzles. It's his drug.
Atria Wulf lol! Hugh Laurie appeared in friends in tow ross' wedding part 2 where he tells rachel, "I'm afraid i have to agree with your friend phoebs, it makes it perfectly clear you were indeed on a break"

He's very protective of them. More so than they actually know
I agree with the upper comments.
House really cares for his people... in his own twisted way, but he cares nonetheless.
Just a reminder that House literally broke and touched deep ground when one of his colleagues committed suicide.
It haunted him so hard he forced himself to genuinely ask for help for the first time in his life.
I agreed with that until the point he gave back the gun. He killed thirteen. Her not dying was just because she managed to hold off on taking the drug otherwise she was dead, because of House.
What was the docs name who was sick
You know after house getting shot you think that they increase security and have metal detectors but no you can bring a pistol to the hospital no matter what
it would be illogical to have metal detectors in a hospital. there is too much metal; gurneys, wheelchairs, walking aids like crutches or zimmer frames , prosthetics. metal structures keeping bones in place. all set off metal detectors.
Not every hospital I've been to has had metal detectors, but they did have metal detectors / security guards at Cape Canaveral hospital. I'm sure plenty more do.
i once went to a hospital in the US at the emergency room .. they had metal detectors and x-ray machines like the ones at the airports ..
the sign on the door takes of this...
I think this might be the third time that House has had a gun pulled on him in the hospital too. At the very least, it's the second, because a gun does get pulled on him once without House getting shot, before someone else comes along and actually pulls the trigger. So this hospital is just really slow on the up take.
I love how house knew exactly what the guy wanted to do with the gun at the end... just simply handed it to him and looked away
11
I love that one dude who stayed in the room like I got nothing better to do might as well see what he has
The craziest thing is that House gave the gun back not only because House needed answers but also because he recognised that same drive in the shooter. And in that way they were alike. I honestly think House may have felt a bit sorry for him and really wanted to help.
Personally, I thought it was a little bit crazier that the kid stuck around, at the very end -- the nurse and Jack from Lost ran for it, but the kid was like, 'well, you took the gun away, now I wanna see what happens'. And then, House gives him the gun back...
I think it just boils down to House needing to solve the mystery. The guy gets arrested and there is no chance House sees him again. They won't let house continue treating the guy so the only logical solution is to resume the hostage situation.
Another fact that until he racked the slide the gun was never ready to fire. They could have fought back or tried.
House didn't want to help the guy, House isn't interest in helping all he wants to do is solve the puzzle. Before he gave the gun back he honestly did not know the answer and that's what drives House, he always has to know the answer. Even if someone dies he'll do the autopsy himself so he can find the answer that he couldn't find beforehand.. it's all about solving the next case for him.
I thought House gave him the gun ro he could kill himself. Haven't seen the series, just this video
Thirteen was a champ in this episode she took heavy narcotics that could kill her.
Knowing she had a terminal illness that was going to kill her in the long run anyway.
Well she was not a champ in the end. Anyway she was just reckless

On a long enough timeline everyone’s survival rate drops to 0
Anthony Mcqueen , I loved Thirteen even more for this.
House was so invested in this case he just couldn't end it right there in the MRI machine without NEEDING to know the answer.
He lives off of his cases and he needed that answer to be able to function, he gave the gun back so he can get his answer. What a phenomenal storyline
CT, with an MRI, no metal is allowed in the room. Or even people.

Omg this is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE episode in the whole series. Thirteen a ways put up a front. She appeared confident, even though she had Huntington's, a serious, life-threatening desiase. This was an amazing episode. Zeljko Ivanek does an excellent job as an actor. I can truly see the desperation in his eyes when was talking to House.
Just FYI. After this end part, he is with 13 and House, and then try drugs on her and himself. Then he trades house for the shot that turns out to be the treatment. Tries to made 13 take it, she refuses and then he just takes it after some chatting. Then the swat blow out the wall and arrest him. Then before leaving, from afar house breathes in heavily, so does the the guy and he can breathe in properly. He then smiles. Then 13 is shown in the hospital, foreman says after some treatment she should be fine. :)

Starscream91 what was wrong with her in this scene?
Who would have thought, a show about a hospital could have so much intensity.
Seems that people still misunderstand House's character and his mental status. Of course he cares about figuring out the puzzle. He always has. But It sometimes becomes much more than that. In this scenerio he empathized with the patients need to know what no one else knew about his disease. The patients desperate desire to know that led him to throw his life away and shoot other people. He wanted to help him in addition to figuring it out. At the end you can see the patient feel happy, actually smile, when he finally knows what he has and can breathe clearly.
I love how this obviously unstable desperate guy is holding a gun and House is just calmly 'what seems to be the problem?' with the same expression/tone as always.

Guess it really depends on the country, here we went to hospital for several months and stayed with nurses, learned to do most of the scans etc
I don’t think it’s a good idea to put a gun near an MRI. It could cause it to fire randomly or at the very least throw it around the room and hit someone, probably hard enough to kill them and likely destroy the MRI machine

Este episodio es de los más brutales de dr house por qué te mantiene en suspenso, drama etc, sin duda de los mejores!!!!!!
Absolutely. One of my favorite of all time

So what House is saying is he shouldn’t be holding people hostage...
He should be making and selling Crystal Meth.
BLUE and 99,1% pure crystal meth
There were so many episodes that pushed the limits back then for a medical drama. Hostages, suicides, pill addiction by a doctor no less. Other dramas did the routine stories. House did as well BUT with one major addition. The issue was always amped up 10-20x the norm. Issues that took place on House always took weird and unusual turns. Which is why I always loved watching it, and STILL DO TO THIS DAY.
David Shore created a BRILLIANT medical drama. I really wish they'd do a mini series bringing House back.
House showed he values solving problems more than saving the lives of patients. The moment House decided that a correct diagnosis was his first priority and he willingly endangered lives by putting the gun back into the hand of hostage taker. When the man later on decides to force 13 to keep taking his medications and she almost does because he had the gun again, that was not an unforeseen situation nor was the possibility that the guy could've opened fire starting a shootout between he and SWAT as the situation turned from desperate to dire, in no way did House do the right thing. In fact, he did the worst thing he's ever done, IMO.
This was one of the best episodes
you missed Thirteen's great speech
What did thirteen say exactly
Haven't seen anyone mention this yet, so, Quicksilver is one of the hostages :)
Justin Magno X-Men Quicksilver or age of Ultron Quicksilver
AceOfSpades2398 Days of Future Past
OMG what a crazy little cameo coincidence thing
best episode ever
I like how the first 20 seconds are like a cutscene to introduce the final boss
9:40 The moment Thirteen realises the patient is not the biggest psychopath in the room
