- I Installed the electriQ iQool 10000 BTU Wall Mounted Air Conditioner with Heating Function. It took about an hour and with the correct tools is an easy job. Otherwise known as an icool AC unit.
I live on the 37th floor, know for a fact I cannot have this fit in, but I still watched the whole video 😂. Amazing instructions and review!
Thanks for the great video. Looking at the price 10 months later, they're now £799 for this model. Now that's what I call inflation!
Please could you confirm the model number?
Thanks for this video; it’s interesting.
However, my heart sank when you started drilling with no dust sheets to cover your bed, bedding and furniture! 🤦🏻♀️
I know how much dust that a core drill generates!
Many years ago, I rented an industrial diamond core drill for a day, from HSS Hire, to drill through my kitchen wall for my tumble dryer vent. I sectioned off the area under the kitchen counter by attaching an old sheet to contain the dust completely, even though I drilled from outside. HSS staff mentioned the risk of the drill snapping my wrist but I was careful and used it without any problems (I’m a female DIY’er).
Also, I wouldn’t be keen on using the roll up plastic vent sleeves as they’re not sealed like a vent pipe. You can buy solid plastic pipe in that size which won’t allow any of the exhaust moisture to get into your wall cavity.
I do really like the design of fitting the vent grilles from inside the room, as it certainly saves climbing high ladders outdoors!👍🏼
great video mate - especially about the drill. thanks
You've covered everything I could think of, great video, hats off to you sir
Hi, thanks for reviewing this! I’m currently torn between this unit and midea U. I know midea is super quiet according to many reviews. But this one is just so much better looking and I can still use my window.
Glad it was helpful!
what a fantastic vidoeo, i need to install some air con units in my new house and was wondering how i could do this myself! Great tutorial thank you for sharing!
You keep waking my google home thing up 😂
Oops Sorry 😂
Brilliantly explained
Thanks 🙏
I installed one of these over a year ago. Fantastic unit a bit noisy but does what it’s supposed to. I have since bought two more electricq mini splits and they are also fantastic. For the money they are great.
Agreed. A bit noisy but do the job nicely for the cost.
Are the mini splits more quiet
That looks a really good unit, was that brick you were cutting through, I hope you wore a mask, thanks!
Do the massive holes in the wall not cause a cold bridge in the winter?
I can’t see any insulation or similar? If the unit is not running surely you’re just encourage cold air and moisture build up around the back of the unit.
I live in a block of flats. How loud is the outside noise for neighbours in the summer when their windows are open? If the vents are positioned within a couple of meters of the open windows, is the noise likely to be clearly audible from inside their flat?
Easier to install than I originally thought! I’m considering getting the 12000BTU version for my living room 👍
Hurting my hand aside took me about 1-2 hours. Through breeze blocks.
What is noise like compared to portable aircons ?
@@veneration1I have a portable 14,000 btu unit and although I don’t have one of these mini splits I can tell you they’re significantly quieter.
What is the coolest temp that this model can blow out ?
Nice video mate - and I can relate to the dangers of torque on SDS drills! I've built myself a fully insulated garden office around 24m2 in size. It's getting toasty now (and frankly difficult to work in) in the heatwave we're currently having in the UK and this heatwave is only around 30 degrees. I'm dreading the 40 degree days that we seem to now get each summer. I've seen some poor reviews online of this product at keeping the temp down properly in these heatwave conditions. Have you noticed any issues in the last couple of weeks of warmer weather? I'm keen to do the install myself, hence unfortuantely won't be able to do a 2 part system. But if this type of model isn't going to be good enough then I will just resort to paying a qualified installer to do one of those systems instead.
I would say our space is about 60m2 and it gets down to 22 from 30 in about an hour or so. The house is well insulated though so for full effect you may need to ensure your office is well insulated.
@@Dad_and_Dexter_Chores thanks mate. I put 100mm PIR boards in ceiling, walls and floor so insulation not too bad (probably better than my 1930s house to be honest :-) ). 60m2? That’s a big room! Sounds like the kit should be more than adequate for me. Thanks again
Can you buy covers for the exhdust in winter
Have you too experienced that the unit will not heat with outside temps of 5degrees or lower? ❄️
Did you also look at the Unico air range? It’s 160mm deep & only requires 162mm core holes… plus quiet @ around 23 decibels or so
I didn’t. Will take a look though.
Hi there,
I’m trying to get this air con, but my studio is 14Sqm, but the distance between my wall and the window are about 90cm, this says it’s 100cm width but would this still be fine to use?
Hi, thank you for making this video, it’s hard to find people with experience with these through the wall units!
Do you find that the holes have increased the amount of outside noise in the room (when the unit isn’t running)? Or have the holes made the room have more of a draft/heat leaking out again when the unit isn’t on?
Good questions Kira.
There is a very slight increase in noise coming in from outside when the unit isn’t running. We haven’t noticed any draft at all, as there’s a foam seal on the back of the unit that seems to stop this occurring.
Is it possible to bend the power cable horizontally along the bottom so that it comes down centrally, or would that obstruct how the air conditioner functions?
Hi
Yes this is possible but you may need a cable tie to hold in place.
I looked 2 months ago about this unit and couldn't see any videos, thanks for posting. Can I ask, it says it is 38kg, did you lift it up okay ? Do you think it would be okay on a insulated shed wall at that weight ? Also what is the cooling like ? I have a portable 14,000BTU for my summer house and it makes a racket. I wanted to go for split but I was interested in seeing this, I have no idea whether to go split or this, have you experience in split to be able to tell the differences ? Thanks !!
Hi Venny, your welcome. For the weight, i lifted it by myself and also onto the wall bracket with a little help from the wife. I would say its not that heavy at all. Its very quiet, i opted for this as in the UK you can only get splits fitted by a licensed FGAS installer. with this you dont. I have installed a split years ago and i would say this all indoor unit is better because with the split, the outdoor unit goes rusty after some time, also the pipe insulation starts to fall apart from the sun.
I got one of these last year for heating rather than cooling. It's great for the shoulder months, but I find when it drops below 5C outside it stops working, or at least delivered a lot less heat for the amount of energy consumption. Constant defrost cycling. The heat exchanger is probably too small and compact to be able to defrost effectively. I'm sure it works well for cooling though.
Yea. It’s doesn’t seem to heat as good as a split mount for sure. I have the same thing.
That's interesting. I was thinking of getting one primarily for some extra heating to try and reduce amount of gas heating I use. The summer cooling being just a bonus. Is it a waste of time as a heater or just not enough without a radiator on too?
@@eughrologh it's just that it's primarily designed as an air conditioner (it's Chinese tech) and the heating functionality is implemented as an afterthought. So the heat exchangers aren't sized appropriate. I use mine for half the winter to supplement my oil and it helps reduce my consumption. But no good during the worst of the winter.
@@eughrologh for heating go split mount. I don’t think this will work well enough for heating to be honest.
We found exactly the same with ours. In fact it’s on now - I turned it on 45mins ago (garden room). Started out at 8c, now at 14…. It just doesn’t get hot enough in cold temps. Works well for cooling though.
Hi, thank you for your video it was very informative, 🎉 my question is I'm about to set one of these up in kennels,, will this let smell that is inside of the room out? Any information would be much appreciated, 😊
@@Jakz-Treez the inside and outside air flow is separated so won’t blow out smells.
Yeh thats exactly what you want a evaporator & a condenser rattling away in your bedroom 😂
What’s the cooling like now? Does it work well? I’ve got someone coming tomorrow to quote us on air con. I might ask him if he’d fit ElectrIQ units as they’re more in my budget 😂
Used it a couple of nights when our bedroom was at 29. Cooled it to 22 and took about 30 mins.
It’s a tad noisy and slower to cool a 60sqm room to be honest however compared to the 10k I was quoted for a 3 way spit system I can cope if it’s cooling me down.
it's alright but you have to put huge holes in your home to fit the thing, and it's just one unit.. you are better off paying a tradesman to do it properly and kit your whole home out with an external + internal system .. you can just put one smaller hole for slim copper pipes and electrical cable to pass through via trunking, then you can have 3 to 10 indoor units depending on the outdoor capacity of that outdoor unit
Yep they are big holes. However my quotes came in at 10-14k gbp for 1 outdoor unit and 3 internal with pipes run through the loft.
@@christopherballard1933 those quotes are a complete rip off when you can get an multi split 3 unit with dehumidifier function for around 2500 usd .... i could fit these myself .. why in the blazes do we need a gas engineer to fit something that runs on electric?
A portable air con unit is noisy typically about 60db, the one in the video is 58db so is still VERY loud. Safe yourself £800 and two holes in your house and buy a portable one, they're just as bad. If you want PROPER air conditioning that's quiet get a split system.
Also get a branded make that actually has a warranty and available spare parts. I've worked on 3 units from these manufacturers 2 DX splits and a Multi split 2 of the three lost their charge from leaking condenser coil after 9 - 10 months the other indoor pc board failed after 18 months. No after sales tech or spares utterly crap
Good video and nice install but the power cable looks crap
Yea. I ran the cable down the corner now so less of an eyesore.
Great vid. How long is the power cable?
It’s about 2.5m.
It's like having a portable AC hanging on the wall sounds noisy you couldn't do a mini split
Do you know if the unit is an inverter?
Have u used the machine for heating these past days?
Hi, not really as it’s been warm outside.
Fair enough.
Please tell me where you brought the drill bits as has this machine 1 year and haven't been able found 180mm drill bit. Have sds plus drill🙏 found it thanks
Tool station. There’s a page image in the video.
I'm ready to buy this but externally theres a gas pipe, i think it will miss it, would you be able to tell me the center distance between the two 180mm holes on the template if you still have it?
Hi
After a rummage I found the plan. From centre to centre it’s about 35.5cm or 14”
Hope this helps you out !
@@Dad_and_Dexter_Chores Appreciate that, thank you for your help
Have you used the unit for cooling down ?
We did an initial test and it worked a treat. Just waiting for some warmer weather !
Hi are you happy with heating from this air conditioner?
Yes. It takes a short time to get going but works as a heater well for us.
@@christopherballard1933 how noisy is? Can you compare to something?
@@kowalkomar4917 very quiet indoors, no loulder than any split mount. Outdoors you can just about hear the air flow through the grate from ground level.
I wonder if this woukd be ok on qn extremely thin wall. The outer wall of my house is upvc couple inch think at best. Can i shorten the two vent pipes that easily.
It’s easy to shorten the pipes.
@@christopherballard1933 may have to have a look cheers for the reply.
Where can i buy this and how much
I’m looking at one on same website it uses 1.5kw which if running for 24 hours wud cost a fortune how efficient is urs with getting to temp and cutting out etc thanks
mine uses 850 watt max... then once the room is up to temperature it reduces down to about 200watt. it wont run at full power all the time.
Can I ask how it joins up to the two big vents in the wall? I can't see that the air won't escape into the room from the two outlets on the unit.
There is a foam seal on the back of the ac unit that stops outside air coming in. Indoor air is separate.
@@christopherballard1933 Thanks a lot. Many say they are noisy do you find it noisy?
@@derekhollis4962 it’s a bit noisy. Maybe louder being mounted high up. However having a cool room when sleeping is worth it.
@@christopherballard1933 Have you tried it in heating mode? If so, is it equally noisy?
Hi i have had one of these units for a while now am i right in thinking it does not turn itself off when it reaches the desired temp because mine stays on the whole time please correct me if im wrong but arnt heaters surpose to turn them selves off once thy reached desired temp
it doesnt turn off .. its reduces power to the amount just enough to keep the room at that temperature.
Can it be fitted to a inner interior wall? Where do the vents go? The other side of the wall I want to fit it to is my hallway.
Hi
Not really. A split mount would be better for that I think.
Thanks
@dad and Dex chores. How is this performing now you've had it a year?
We don’t use it in the winter. It’s not good at heating. On the few hot evenings we have had I set it to cool about an hour before we go to bed. Works a treat if a little noisy. I can cope with the nose better than melting from being too hot in bed !
How did you get on with connecting the Wi-Fi any tips
No issues once I realised you have to press a button !
Does anyone know how to take the casing off these units? I'm on my second one (replacement) and this one's going the same way as the first one. It's got a lot of gear noise - sounds like a gear train with no oil or grease
Did you ever work this out? I have the same problem - crunching gear noise coming from the fan which started a week after it went out of warranty :( - So far i just tried to unscrew the screws on the vent at the top of the unit but this didn't do anything. I'm going to take it off the wall tomorrow and try and access the fan from the back... will et you know how it goes
@@NickV973
Sorry - up until now I have put up with it - mainly because I put it high on a wall and need a second pair of arms to take it down to look in more detail . The noise comes and goes.
I would be very interested in how you get on
the fan is rubbing against the polystyrene just push on the top of the plastic the noise will go away
Does it heat with an element or as a heat pump?
As a heat pump
How is the unit performaning in thisbwarm weather?
Schedule it to come on an hour before we go to bed and by time we are up there it’s perfect and cool. It’s a tad loud high up on the wall to run all night but compared to our old rattling fans is lots better.
We turn it off then back on if we need too.
I should also say it’s very low power consumption.
Hi how long did it take you to install from start to finish pls ?
About 1-2 hours. With the right drill
6:20 I wonder how many air conditioners that one command turned on. My smart speaker turned on a random radiator valve.
Haha. Sorry about that !
Any update on how well this works in this heatwave ? Any comparison to a split air con for cooling ? Thanks !!
TBH it’s a bit loud at night when mounted this high up, however it does cool the room well without issue. I have it scheduled to turn on an hour before bed and turn off at 1.30. Works a treat.
We have had a split before it’s was quieter than this but nowadays you have to pay an Fgas installer, so your looking at about 3 to 4 times the cost of this unit I fitted myself.
@@christopherballard1933 Thanks. I have a portable one right now, an electricQ and the noise is awful, at 28 degrees right now it is cutting out and rattling as it can't seem to cool very well, I have cleaned the filters. It takes it from 32 degrees to 28 degrees but that is it, and it is 14,000btu. I am hoping to move to a wall one but like you say, they seem to need an F engineer, except the "electriQ Easy-Fit DIY split" one, which is out of stock until December. Which leaves the unit you have, noise is my main concern as I have hyperacusis which I got in 2021 and since then any noise is annoying to me to the point of pain. Do you have a dB meter on your phone to see how loud it is 1 or 2 metres from the device ? Thanks.
How's it been so far, any updates? Good or bad
It’s fine for heating and cooling. Bit noisy though to a fan, tad noisier than a split.
Dunno about 2 massive holes in my wall for a machine that might last 5-7 years then you can’t buy the same machine again. Not a concern?
I kept the block cut outs and cladding. Just in case
What the lowest temperature it goes?
16 degrees C.
Nope , definitely not as efficient as a mini split. Not much better than a cheapy from homebase
Can't hardly hear a damn word with the poorest audio possible.
Yea, we fixed that with a mic on later videos.
you will need to get used to that if you want one of these units lol
can you re gas these units?
Most likely but would need some disassembly
its noisy as fuck
