    Understanding the fretboard is one of the biggest fundamentals to ever unlocking guitar, bass, or any other stringed instrument! Awesome work as always

    Great job, Mark. Your ability to break-down technical aspects of music and the bass and then teach them coherently is outstanding. Be well.

    That tip of concentrating on certain "areas" is what helped me start to kind of lock in locations for sure. Just concentrating on frets 1-5. Still learning, still memorizing, still feel like I'm terrible at it, but playing every day means constant progress!
    From playing piano as a kid and Trombone in school I remember how it FEELS to be able to smoothly read music, but I forgot the notes. I definitely wanna get there with the bass. I mean come on it's only one clef it can't be THAT hard right?! Say no to plateaus!

      I'm learning at 36 with no past music experience. I am also only trying to learn parts of the fret board because looking at it all is so overwhelming. I'm also having trouble staying on time with the song. Good luck with your bass journey!

    Mark, thanks for posting this; good lesson. @10:08, "We're gonna look at the first 5 frets here, no open strings". Then the first note you play is an open E string. Cracked me up.

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  Před 4 lety +3

      Ha ha. Yeah, I meant no open strings but the E string. That's just to get rid of any choices you have to make between open strings and 5th fret alternatives. My bad.

    Something I’ve also learned is literally getting a chart with all of the notes on the neck and going down each fret saying the note name until you memorize it

    On single tip: do not use tablatures, only sheet music

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  Před 4 lety +4

      Yup. Tab has no place in learning the notes on the instrument. Quite the opposite and the reason bass players and guitarists often suck at knowing the fretboard.

    What if yer bass only has one string and no frets, an it used to be mamma's washtub?
