    Unconvinced that it's a good plan to play a completely different opening in classical chess just because others have seen your normal openings online. You'll be less familiar with the type of positions arising and what to do in them. If you're happy that your online openings are sound and safe, stick with them! Opponents can prepare for them but you will still be in a position where you feel comfortable. In this game it feels as if Anna's opponent is more comfortable with the strategy of what to do in the position than she is. He has a clear plan, she can't find one (and indeed there may not be a good active plan in this line - another reason for not just following book theory if it leads to positions you're not happy in). So she gets short of time in a tricky position where she's on the defensive. Simon Webb's "Chess for Tigers" made interesting points on finding openings that suit your style rather than trying to play the "best" book moves.

    • @pglover64
      @pglover64 Před 2 měsíci +3

      Well said Ian! I wish Anna had confidence in her game. Question! How many moves ahead do you think someone should hypothesize/strategically play-out? I ask because I feel a player not only loses time pondering each move but they also become mentally and physically fatigued worrying about moves that never come to fruition.

    • @iankemp1131
      @iankemp1131 Před 2 měsíci

      @@pglover64 That's a very good and interesting question. If there's complex tactics you have to analyse key lines several moves deep if you can, especially if sacrificing material. In Anna's first game in this tournament (against the Cow) she sac'd 2 pieces but missed one resource that allowed White to give one back and have a won ending. But for a strategic plan in one sense you're seeing many moves ahead in principle, but only checking for immediate tactical reasons which might refute it, maybe a couple of moves deep. "Tactics is knowing what to to when there is something to do, strategy is knowing what to do when there is nothing to do." Try to form a plan and stick to it unless something major happens that forces you to change it or gives you a tactical opportunity. Sometimes that plan is to sit tight because there is nothing better. I think that was the case here and Anna got into a time-losing spiral while trying to find something to do. Maybe that would not have happened if she'd played the lines she's used in blitz games so that she has seen the shape of the positions hundreds or thousands of times before and you can tell instinctively by gut feel whether something's likely to work. Also interesting whether she has a different approach from playing most of her games as quickplay unlike those of us who were brought up on classical chess. Simon Webb quoted a classic example where he got into a "nothing" position against a known time-trouble addict, waited for him to use up all his time trying to work out the best plan, and then opened up the game so his opponent couldn't work out the best tactical lines with a couple of minutes on his clock for 20-odd moves. Sorry about the long essay!

    I'm always rooting for Anna. I love her smile and her beautiful adoration for the game of chess. I will give some tough love here and say I don't think Anna will ever go much higher in her rankings for the following reason. I always hear her say how "nervous" different players or situations make her. Those who are really higher ranked players are usually fearless when it comes to their opponents.
    Her lack of "time management" demonstrates a lack of confidence in her moves and overall play.
    But in the end I don't care if she is 2200 or 1200. She is still my all-time favorite chess player. Go Anna. We Love You!!!

    Hello Anna !
    I think the turning point of the game is at 4:51. The situation is bad for you, because you have 2 knights, against 2 bishops, which always offers better zones controls.
    But, when the black bishop steps back, you have one option to retake the initiative.
    It’s time to be aggressive and force the opponent to trade their bishops with threatening knight positions (or lets you retake center control of chess).
    The best move, for you, was Black knigth c5 at 4:51, and target e4 with knight or pawn (depending on the opponent’s response).🧐

    • @iankemp1131
      @iankemp1131 Před 2 měsíci

      Although c5 looks a thematic square for the Knight, surely it is just met by b4 driving it away again and gaining time. White has absolutely no need to trade bishops. So it seems to just help White's own initiative by giving an extra tempo for c5. I think the position is difficult because Black has no obvious route to counterplay and just has to sit tight and await events. So not convinced this is a great opening to choose, especially against a lower ranked player where you want to win.

    This line just looks difficult to play for Black because around 4:45 it is a solid position but there is nothing obvious to do and seemingly no good plan. I can see why Anna spent a lot of time here trying to find one, because it can feel demoralising just to sit tight and wait for your opponent to do what they want. White exploited his positional advantage well. I personally don't like the e5 variations of the Sicilian giving a backward pawn on d6 and a White outpost on d5; the e6 variations seem to give Black more counterplay options - like the Cow!

      @@AlanTov He will definitely earn points this tourney and you are correct he has played well in this tourney, but I was referring to his rating not as a knock on him but more so on Anna’s rating. I really like Anna’s game but she is not playing like a mid-2100 player. Once she is able to time manage better and not over-analyze every conceivable move that her opponent may or may not make, then she deserves that rating! Anna is 3-1-3(wins-draw-loses) against players rated 1850-1900. Do I feel Anna has the skill level to perform at 2140, sure she does, but having the ability is one thing and performing consistently is another. I’m still rooting for you Anna! Please please please, just make the moves you already know and have confidence in yourself that no matter what move your opponent plays that you will counter-act their move with a better one. You play each game as though you are losing from the beginning. Just have fun! What’s the worst you can do, lose! If you can’t enjoy the game then you have already lost.

    I know that feeling, what Anna had in that Game. It´s sad that she loosed this Game. The only possibility were not to play the Afternoon-Games and make an Rest.
    If I have such an Feeling I don´t go to the Martial-Arts-Training.

    It is impossible to play Chess without making mistakes.
    And you know what is the biggest Chess mistake of all? Not playing Chess.
    So go and play, because it makes you feel alive. And it is always a pleasure to listen to you telling us how it went and sharing your experiences. And in my personal case, since I have a great deal to learn, it is also a learning experience.
    Cheers.

    3 hours of sleep?? It seems Ana was in a catatonic state.
    I know after driving 22 hours, the world seems dreamlike. Your brain know what's going on but everything in in slow motion. Nothing seems real and time flies by. If you shut your eyes for a second, all hell is going to break loose as you swerve back and forth on the highway.
    Yep, I know when you don't have your faculties bad thing happen!
    Good luck next time!

    That guy straight up knew his theory and after he traded off his 2nd knight he had easy moves on the board.
    Not sure why Anna lets comments about her being easy to prep against concern her when the games were announced 30 mins before they start. Surely you play your strongest lines?
