  • My 2011 Kia Sorento washer sprayer stopped working. Sticking a needle in the nozzles didn't fix it..but cleaning the screen on the pump did. Here's how.

Thanks for posting this! My daughters 2010 Kia Forte did the same thing and was astonishingly easy to fix after watching your video. If you are ever in Canyon Lake, Texas drop by and drink a case of beer with me.

Couple tips some might find helpful:
That filter screen is mounted in a plastic holder that is easily pried off the the pump with a fingernail for cleaning.
You'd be amazed at the amount of crud that can grow in a windshield washer fluid reservoir. You can drain it into a bucket (or siphon most of it out first as I do), then flush out the crud by pouring clean water through the fill tube. Or use a hose. Catch the flush water in a clean container and you'll see globs of crud - mold, fungus, bacteria - I don't know, it's just more stuff to clog that screen.
When putting the fluid back in, or even when using new fluid, it helps to use a funnel with a filter (cloth, paper towel, coffee filter, whatever) to catch any impurities. I find if I allow a container of new fluid to sit in the garage for a month or two, it often has some ... stuff ... that settles to the bottom of the container, almost a gel consistency. I don't want that in the reservoir. Clogs the pump screen and the nozzles.

I wanted to say thank you for posting this. I just used the same approach to fix my 2011 Kia Soul. I also wanted to add that it was worth it to me to drain the whole reservoir so I could take my time cleaning the screen on the pump. I had gelatin-like buildup on both sides of the screen, so I needed to pop it out and run it under some hot water.
    Thanks again.

Thanks for this. Have just done this thanks to your video. Tank was full of sludge. Didn't have to take the whole cowling off (couldnt get the screws out), just the 2 screws at the front, and pealed the cowling back.

A quick fix I found was to use canned compressed air to blow into the pump side of the washer hose line connection (located by the passenger side windshield just under the hood.) If the reservoir is full the air will push the contaminants to the top of the container allow them to spill over the top. Thanks for the video!.

A superb help! I too only removed the two bottom screws and inserts, and two at the back of the wheel well. i was able to wrestle it down enough to clean the screen. Job done in 45 minutes, including cleaning myself off. Thanks a million for posting this!

Good explanation, clear and to the point, I didn't think I could do this, but I followed your video, and managed to clear the pump filter and flush the washer tank out too, advice from another u tuber, much slime and gunk in tank, refilled with new and clean antifreeze wash, now working great ,the washer pump. Saved me £££££££,well chuffed, lady DIY car mechanic. Thank you.

Amendment, still happens now and again, had a 💡,I put a teaspoon of bleach, yes, bleach in to water tank, left overnight and tried next morning, it worked, it cleaned the filter inside the tank, working great, have done this twice since. Just an idea.👍

Bought a old Kia Cerato Sedan 2006, hear the washer motor running but no water coming out at all, no water leaking at the bottom of veh. Think most likely the same problem as u - clog washer’s screen filter. Thank u very informative and clear vid.

Thanks very much. The part about the screws / fasteners was very helpful.
Used this guide for a 2006 Cerato (Spectra in USA). The problem felt like it was exactly the same. I didn't take the whole wheel liner off. Loosening the side near the pump got me enough access.
Feels so great to have a properly working washer pump again!

hey thank you for this. sure enough the 8 month pregnant wife's '11 stopped working during a snowstorm and extreme cold temps. I was able to do this fix in no time. two things I found. the clips in cold temps strip easily (I have to change two) and I didn't have to take the whole wheel well out. only that side. thanks again you saved me some $$

Had the same problem with My 2014 Optima and your method worked. Like others mentioned, I only needed to remove 4 of the screws to gain access to the reservoir. After removing the pump, the filter was covered in calcite and goop.
    Thanks again! 😄

Thank you for this video. I have a 2011 Kia Sorento and when I pulled the pump out all this black jelly substance washed out of the reservoir with the blue washer fluid so I'm glad I let it drain a bit till it was coming out clean. Then like u said I scraped the mesh clean b4 popping it back in place. Great job u saved me a couple hundred dollars.

  • @flashgordon6238
    @flashgordon6238 Před 9 lety +3

Thanks, just what I needed. Pump would run and I could pull washer fluid from the connector near the windshield with a vacuum - but no fluid would pump out of the connector. I jacked up the car to drop the front wheel and suspension a bit and was able to pull all the fasteners, but found that I only needed to pull the fasteners from the shock strut forward and the front part of the wheel well liner dropped enough to access the pump. Found that a # 2 rubber stopper will plug the hole perfectly when you remove the pump for cleaning. There was slime and washer fluid crystallization on the screen. An old toothbrush fixed that.

This can actually be done by only removing the two screws from the bottom of the cowling and then holding them back (I used bungee cords). Great video and probably saved a $50.00 service call.

Thank you. Once I figured out which 3, saved me from taking out entire inner liner. Too bad I’ll have to do it again, the pump itself is bad and I’ll have to replace it later. Tried running it while I was next to it, heard a click and then nothing. Fuses are good. Hoses look good, pump isn’t clocked and filter is clean.

Thanks from Australia. Worked a treat on my 2014 Sorento. Unscrewed the front half of the wheel liner cover which gave me access to the pump. Also jacked up the wheel as someone suggested to create a bit more room. I would describe my blockage as a jelly like blue crud substance! I'd be curious to know if washer additive helps create this crud or prevents it from forming.
