    Okay after procrastinating and fearful of doing the mod with the Thermalright ILM I did it. 12700K overclocked to a 5.2GHz on two cores and an all core at 5GHz I was getting temps in Cinebench at 90 to 91 degrees. Once I installed the ILM, I am down to 79 to 80 degrees, a near 10 degree drop!!!! Very impressed with Thermalright and great job both on the ILM and price...Will do what it says..

      I need to get one of these, I process a lot of high res photo raw files from a canon 5D mark 4 and I literally have to take my side panel off, and have a large floor fan blow in there at full speed to prevent thermal shutdowns, I watch my temps and some of the cores still hit 100 C for a moment here and there and mostly stay super high during processing. Granted I just use an air cooler but still i want to see how much this thing helps

      @@lander77477 hey don't know if it helps, but I'm waiting for this and a new cooler and in the meanwhile I've kind of solved the temp issues by limiting the power on the bios... not undervolting or oc or complicated stuff and 0 guessing or stability issues, just enter on the cpu power consumption and lower the max turbo to 200 watts from the 240 stock, and the constant turbo from 200 to 160.... it's a bit slower on 3ds vray renders and just as good on after effects but way cooler and with less fan noise

The only thing I can try is to boot with the CPU socket empty, but i won't bother with that unless I need to update the bios. I bought the thermal grizzly contact frame which I heard is higher quality, and bought a double tower cooler, so when I install them, hopefully that will bring my temps within reason

    Then i replaced the white cable binder with a 40x40 ground down chipset aluminium cooler.

      Don't bother. The normal bracket of Intel is also just tight mounted without torque at all. • @stevesls007
      @stevesls007 Před 2 lety +11

      YES! The bolts can be overtightened and cause several performance issues including system instability and boot failures. I understand the tightening procedure is to FIRST tighten by holding the tool ( torx key ) between thumb and index finger ( "finger tight"), then AFTER all bolts are "finger tight", tighten each bolt an ADDITIONAL 1/4 turn. I have read that the torque load is a scant 0.03 to 0.06 NEWTON METERS - but I do not have a micro-torque wrench that can be accurately / reliably set that low. The "good news" is that if the bolts are over-tightened, backing them off slightly ( and uniformly) seems to correct any performance issues. PS: I am not an engineer, but I slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night!

    X shape or pea sized amount in the middle of the CPU is the way to go with thermal paste. This lines of dots method seems almost intentionally designed to create air bubbles which lead to uneven cooling. Think of a dozen blobs heading towards each other from different directions and you will visualize how the air in the middle sections gets trapped.

      I forgot the channel but dude tested all methods and ran benchmarks for temps, his verdict was, the way you apply doesn't even matter. Another takeaway was, too much will neither help nor will it hinder the heat dissipation. The only mistake one can do when applying thermal paste is not putting enough. Crisscross, Bean, X, using a spatula to spread it like a toast, doesn't matter, all temps with these different application techniques were within 1 degree of each other.

      @@okinawagaijin9344 this one? czcams.com/video/ofyNgJyhGuc/video.html it seems that if the paste is fluid enough and the heatsink pushes sufficiently on the heatspreader and the contact surfaces have favorable geometries, any potential air pockets get pushed out. There is still an untested possibility that maybe with a denser paste, insufficient pressure or wrong surface geometries the air pockets might not be completely eliminated

      Technically No. Your computer will last for 5+ years without the modification. But for me personally, given the amount of abnormal heat that is generated, Yes. You could argue that the longevity of the CPU isn't an issue since you'll likely upgrade well within 5 years - and there's no evidence that these CPUs can't handle 5+ years of normal operation without it (Overclocking is a different story ofc). But again, for me, I'm not comfortable with taking that chance with these cores running at 125W on extra "E cores" - there's comparatively less head-room for the temperatures. I admit, it's just an "emotional judgment", but I'm used to my processor never touching 60 C. It kinda sucks that Intel and the Mobo makers are offloading the excess cost of a few dollars on its customers - a market efficiency that Thermal Grizzly and Thermalright are capitalizing on), but hopefully they suspect that their consumer base is wise enough to be irritated by the extra hassle (I'd happily pay 5 bucks extra on my Mobos for this to come pre-installed).

      @@Theprince92 Crap. I tried the washer mod and it made my system stop booting entirely, giving me one hell of a scare. I'm not eager to take the risk again just to see zero improvement...
      To anyone reading, torque is VERY important. When I reinstalled the original bracket back into place it wouldn't boot either until I tightened the screws very gently.

      Maybe your washer too thick, cpu not making good contact to the socket pin... well if i didnt get any thermal improvement at least my ihs wont bent overtime..

    did the same to prevent my processor from bending, I bought this thing and now my processor goes from 70 to 80 degrees, this went up 10 degrees plus my processor, before it didn't go above 72 degrees, I don't know what I did wrong, don't press the screws with force, precisely because when I put it on I heard a small creak on my motherboard, does anyone know how to solve it?

      Clean thermal paste
      Unscrew bracket
      Screw bracket back on and tighten each screw slowly in a diagonal pattern
      Apply mx-4 thermal paste
      Attach heatsink

      Did you use a torque screwdriver?

    • @OCXChile
      @OCXChile Před 2 lety +1

      @@florian1427 Nope, I didn't. Have mounted this frame twice without issues. My recommendation would be using just 1 hand (maybe just 2 fingers) to do the final tight. Also always tight each screw with 2 complete turns and in diagonal. You need to apply an even pressure to the socket, else some pins might bent. Regards

    Absolutely useless instructions with no details on buckle tighting torque. If you try to tighten buckle all the way down, the CPU won't boot and may actually get damaged. Second paste application is absolutely incorrect. Overall my advice is don't do this at home.
