    Hi Maarten
    The first time in 15 years of using youtube that I actually hit the subscribe button! Amazing videos!
    I am incredibly glad to find you among all this "unboxing-and-review"-crap where the "influencers" just read from the manual or spec sheet but most likely haven't even turned the camera on before. They do not have any idea about the camera and they do not care as it's just about "click my affiliate links in the description so I get a comission".
    You on the other hand know what you are doing and found a great way to "transport and deliver" this knowledge to the audience. Your videos are quite long compared to what others with the same topic offer - but as they are packed with useful and valuable content it's easy to watch them for hours where others just get super boring or annoying within the first 30 seconds. I really enjoy all the little details you explain. I also appreciate that there are no "special effects" or annoying intros shown in your videos. Also no "desperate begging" for subscription or likes like most others do several times during their videos! You just keep it simple and smart - the way it should be.
    Thanks for putting all the work into the videos so we can all benefit from your knowledge and passion! :)
    PS.: What do you think about the performance of the 16-80F4? Lot of people complain about soft edges and heavy vignetting on both extreme ends? Do see any issue here or would you recommend the lens? I am quite interested in the lens as I am a full time traveller for over 3 years now so size and weight matters.
    PPS.: I immediately liked your name because I grew up in Heilbronn (german city) :)

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 3 lety

      I'm honoured - thanks for the kind words and the subscription!! The 16-80 is not a great lens, particularly for video. I prefer and use the 16-55, although it's Fujifilm's primes that get the best ratings.
      I've never been to Heilbronn, are there are any Heilbrons in town?

    • @footlooselife5004
      @footlooselife5004 Před 3 lety

      @@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for your judgement on the 16-80. Unfortunately the weight of the 16-55 scares me. Have you used the 18-135? I am also thinking about 18-55 + 55-200 combo as I could need the additional reach. Any ideas on that? I am asking as I am currently using Sony gear but ditch that in 2 weeks as I move to Fuji with the X-S10 as body. I mainly do stills and video only occasionally (about 90-10).
      To be honest, I have never heard "Heilbron" as a name before ;-)

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 3 lety

      @@footlooselife5004 The 18-135 is (in my opinion) even less desirable. The 18-55 is a good lens, I have no experience with the 55-200. Wow, strange, I've heard it all my life!

    Thank you for the incredible effort you put into these in-depth videos Maarten! I hope to see you test the "webcam" option too, once it finally works. But in general, i think you have convinced me, even with some of the minor flaws, the X-S10 is the perfect camera for me to hop on to the X-system train.
    By the way, does the 16-80mm still have the focus-issue when zooming during recording? I've seen in multiple reviews, that it was very unpleasing when zooming.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 3 lety +2

      I would not expect a lens of that type to perform well while recording video - that's a need, as demonstrated in the video, that's met by a parfocal (cine) lens.

    Thank you very much for your detailed information. Very handy for a beginner of the Fuji X-S10.
    Just one note: the shutter speed of 1/60 by 30 fps in 4K does not work in Europe as it creates a flickering if one uses artifical lighting. A shutter speed of 1/50 works better.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 3 lety

      It does work if you are using appropriate video lighting. Here in North America, it's also sometimes necessary to adjust the shutter to avoid flickering.

    Great stuff, even if I know most of the information, it's great to listen to a pro explain it. I'm looking at switching from my A6300 to two of these as my primary video cameras, since I just have one native e-mount lens. How does F-Log compare to S-Log2 in 8-bit? How about the externally recorder 10-bit F-Log vs 10-bit S-Log? How's the XS 10's AF and low light performance compared to an a7iii or an a6600?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 3 lety

      F-Log (10 bit at 200 Mbps) is superior to S-Log, with less noise.
      The results for external are similar, also F-Log is less noisy.
      The AF on the X-S10 is better than the A6300, the low light is better on the A7III and A6600.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 3 lety +1

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 2 lety +1

    Thank you for all that you do on this channel! These videos are top notch quality and provide so much information that I've yet to find elsewhere.
    I do have one question though: I am very interested in upgrading from my Canon M50 to this body here as it seems EF-M is almost completely dead in the water. A few reviews have mentioned that there's no subject tracking in video besides for face and eye detect. Is this true? I currently have this feature on my Canon body and I can just tap the touch screen to focus and track any subjects until I tap and switch it to something else. I tried looking at the manual and I found this: "When CONTINUOUS AF is chosen for FOCUS MODE, the camera will continuously adjust focus for changes in the distance to the subject at point selected by tapping the display." It sounds like there is tracking in video but I figured I'd ask.
    Once again, thank you for all of your help. I look forward to all of your future videos! - Jonathan

      I would take a careful analysis of the real deficiencies of my current camera and the benefits I would achieve before deciding to upgrade. It's not that I don't believe the X-S10 isn't a better camera - but it's not that much better that, unless there's a very specific problem, an upgrade would actually be a material improvement.

    Hi Maarten! What SD card should I buy for this camera? I will be using it for both stills and video so I want something that can keep up with the demand but I don't want to spend more than I should and I've read that UHS-II is more than this camera needs.
    I've been looking at Sandisk SD cards because they were recommended in the user manual. Everyone online suggests buying the extreme pro version but would you say that the cheaper Sandisk ultra would work just as well or should I pay more for the better SD card? Or do you recommend any other brands?

      I agree with the advice you've already heard. For stills only, unless you're doing a lot of bursting, Ultra is fine, but for high bit rate video, I'd recommend Extreme Pro. SanDisk is a good brand, also consider Panasonic, who make excellent quality cards.

      Are the settings I recommend in the video not working for you?
      I would recommend that you use a tripod (a stable shot will be less noisy) and that you use a lens with a large aperture (F2.8). I suspect that there is a lot of motion in your images, so using a slower shutter (1/30 instead of 1/60) is not advisable. After that it's just how much "noise" you're prepared to tolerate based on the ISO required to achieve a reasonable exposure. F-Log may help, but will require more work.

    Thanks, Maarten. I do have the PASM dial to video mode, and checked "mic level" on display custom settings, but no level appears.

      I use the Deity S-Mic2, but it's powered by a Tascam DR-70D mixer which feeds the camera.

    Hey hello, I have just bought this camera. I was wondering what does the "slow draining of battery" you mention means if you use a standard charger? Does doing so ruin the battery or what?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 2 lety +1

      It does not ruin the battery, it just means that it will slowly drain while you're recording. Using a USB-C power delivery type charger does not drain the battery.

    Maarten thank you so much for this video. I'm wondering if there is a way to change AF to MF while recording, I know i can do it in the 'Movie Optimized Control' but i want a quicker access as the front Switch on the XT30.
    Hope you can help 🙏
