Everyone's an expert until they have to do it themself. I rebuilt my bus engine many years ago when I was young and foolish. I thought I did a good job until I watched this video lol. Now I understand why it only lasted a few hundred miles and the crank went lol. In my defence I was young. I'm pretty sure I could do a really good job now by using videos like this on the internet. Keep up the good vids.
Rebuilt my first vdub engine at 18 years old in 1977. Very fun. I was taught to not paint the case on an air cooled engine. Still cruis'n a 64 with a stock 40hp. Cheers!
Making magic on a rainy day, tripping, cussing, & still pissed about missed footage. Just like my brother, goop side down & a fat thumbs up! Classic vid
Your videos are fantastic. I have never built a vw motor and am going to be doing so soon for my bus. Not only has the assembly been helpful to me but all of the tips and tricks you throw in are quite helpful. Now I am not as apprehensive about doing this build. Thank you!!!!!
Great video Darrin, Yes Andrea is a hard worker, she has helped me out so much to where around here they don't give a crap. Hope you get to feeling better. Thanks for the video.
Nice job Darrin, even though you weren't feeling good, and hope you're doing well now after all you've been through. Only thing with this engine build is that short block being black, yeah I know many if not most do that, but yrs. of dirt bike racing showed me that black attracts and holds heat over a light color or even a brushed stripped finish, tested it ourselves, and the difference is beyond what one would think. even exhaust systems became less black and more chrome after we tested the temp differences.
Great video. Tons of information. You probably forgot more than I will ever know. Maybe Andrea could sell you the house down the road, that you like so much. That would be an easy sell for her. Take care............
as a hobby my son and I restore vw bugs and bus and we rebuild motors. To date we rebuilt 6 type 1 and 1 2lite type 4 check the crank to make sure they are seated has been challenging your bearing..... check great idea..thanks for sharing will help us on our next project
retrorestore he’s an idiot with that torque wrench, while he was correct about adding a lever to the handle, you should not “double check” your torque.... I watched him over-torque several of the rod cap bolts in part one and contrary to what he said, using an extension does not effect torque, only adapters that move the wrench off-center from the fastener such as a crow’s foot or wobble adapter will effect torque. As long as the head of the torque wrench is slice feted over the fastener, the torque will be accurate.
Excellent build. I've been rebuilding VW's for years and appreciate your work. I think it's a noble thing to share the knowledge. If you're a air cooled driver, and even if you don't plan on doing a rebuild, you should watch just to appreciate what's happening under the deck. It'll keep you from abusing your car. Also, your use of Locktite is not a bad thing. The key words were minimal amount. Great job!
Thank you for such a great video for someone like me who is about to purchase my first VW, bug or bus and eventually will have both. My question is how much of a budget do I need to replace all hardware as I agree with you in using all new components, thank you and if anyone has any idea of how much to budget for parts will be greatly appreciated.
I rebult My 1600 wish I had of seen this First , It was the First Time Ive Ever rebuilt a VW But it went OK been going Good for Three Years Now , Thanks for all These , Im Gonna Do a New Motor Soon Mabye Make it a Bit Bigger, I Painted My Block Red cos i alredy had that color LOL BTW Dude does Painting the Block on a VW Inhibit the Cooling in your Opion , Ive had people tell me it does ,But Ive had no Problems And Im In Australia where its a warm Climate
Is there a good place to get a complete rebuild kit? I'm just getting started on my 1600. I'd also like to increase the jugs and pistons a bit as well...what would you recommend for a bit of increase in HP but not enough to have to change heads?
isn't using a deep well socket the same thing as using a shorter extension on a torque wrench? and also could you do any damage by turning the motor over like that and the conn rods banging into the cylinder ports ?
Darrin, i have a question. I installed a counterweight crank in my motor and when i was rotating the crank i heard grinding. When i took of the Crank due to hearing grinding, i spotted that the crank was grinding against the case. Was i so-post to grind of / modify the case first? or should it of fit like a glove?
Hey Darrin, what type of paint did you use on the case, and would you use a aluminum or magnesium case for your next build. Thanks for your hard work with theses videos...
That polishing paste you used between the lobe and lifter puzzles me, the stock engines dont really have an oil filter, if I was doing that I would change the oil after 10 minutes. Im wondering if that paste can damage the crank and rod bearings?
hay Darren I am working on a vw Baja project here and I have run into a problem. im no vw guy really but I bought this many years ago cause I like bajas. anyway the motor threw a rod the day I bought it no big deal knew it was tired and had a knock when I bought it. I bought another core motor from a guy and it was a 1776 90.5 pistons and cylinders. anyway I had the case line hones or hat ever they do . bought a new scat crank cb rods new cam all new internal parts. put the short block together and when I went to install the cylinders they don't fit. I bought new aa 92.0 mm kit and the cylinders wont fit the case. knowing that the case had to be machined for the 90.5 cylinders. so measured the case and it measures 94mm or 3.720 the new cylinders skirts mesure 3.780 or 96 mm and the new kit fits my heads just fine ? did they change the design in the cylinders over the years ? any help would be much appreciated thanks
Greetings Darrin. I have a Beetle that needs an engine. In order to save money(I don't have) I am thinking of buying a Short block, including pistons, cylinders, and heads. Do you have any videos on how to finish the rest of the engine from that point on? Thanks Don
rods squeezed together so they stand up? are they held together or just squeeze and let go? I need that trick however it works...I hate floppy rods! Great vid thank you!
Do they make aftermarket case bolts like ARP studs or anything like that just curious on a drag racing type motor a friend of mine is building a 1776 turbo motor and I didn't know if they made them or is it worth it.
I thought the torques are supposed to be 25 ftlbs and 14 ftlbs respectively re the large and small bolts/nuts? i.e. per the Bentley Book. ????? Or is that for a different size motor?
I got a guestion, how hard is it to find a stock 1600 super beetle engine. i am inteeesting in buying a 1974 super beetle sun bug edition for 750.00 no engine and the rear pans are holey and help would be great. live the videos
I believe it's thread-locking material - prevents vibrations from loosening the nuts. Goes on the outside because on the inside it would eff-up your torque readings.
Normally you don't paint the engine case. These are air cooled engines made from magnesium to make them breath easier. When you paint the crankcase you take that ability away.
Nice video, I was curious to know if you've ever done Chevy rods and journals something we've always done and we have zero complaints prefer it over the vw rods and journals if you have tried it how did you like it?
did vw s for ten yrs when the num 3 exh valve breaks and hits the piston and bends the rod you can straien the rod dont believe me well a super beetle strut rod is the same size as the rist pin ok bend the rod as close as you can run the strut rod into the god rod and try to get it into the one u just straiend wount go bend it some more it will go just takes time done many its a cheap fix need to get the loose stuff out of the motor turn it over many times it will work sorry so long
it has no effect on cooling , i can take you for a ride in my bus the cylinder head temp stays at 250 i have a two temp gauge one on right & left i also monitor oil temperature , heat is a byproduct of a poor tune
wish I could like this again for every time I re-watch this video. Thanks for posting it
if people only knew how hard it is to do this stuff and make a video at the same time they would not put negative comments.
Everyone's an expert until they have to do it themself.
I rebuilt my bus engine many years ago when I was young and foolish. I thought I did a good job until I watched this video lol. Now I understand why it only lasted a few hundred miles and the crank went lol.

Been building vw's for 25 years never seen the middle bearing check. Always marked with sharpie pen. Great instruction.
thanks Darren these videos are great and helpful. I appreciate what you do and the help you give . thanks
Very cool. It all looks so simple when a pro does it!
Thanks for part 2
loving these 1600 build vids! Thank you so much!
Rebuilt my first vdub engine at 18 years old in 1977. Very fun. I was taught to not paint the case on an air cooled engine. Still cruis'n a 64 with a stock 40hp. Cheers!
pretty cool stuff....ty for posting and going thru it all....i've always loved putting motors togather no matter what type it is
This video just saved my first engine build in 20 years. Wiggled the second half bearing and it moved.
HELL YES!!! Thanks again Darrin. Watching every minute.
Making magic on a rainy day, tripping, cussing, & still pissed about missed footage. Just like my brother, goop side down & a fat thumbs up! Classic vid

New hardware really makes the job look professional. Thanks for the vid. Hope the tropical storm passes soon
very nice Darrin it makes me feel to get out and work on my Baja thank you
Fire-Bull-02 was here for part 2. Think I'm gonna do my build right from your vids. Thanks.
Great video Darrin, Yes Andrea is a hard worker, she has helped me out so much to where around here they don't give a crap. Hope you get to feeling better. Thanks for the video.
Good stuff. Thanks for the vid Darrin!
Hope you feel better.
Ron
Great vid!! One of the best
Enjoyed all 3 videos. Wish you were in our hometown and could offer courses at a vo-tech schools for all VW owners. Thanks and keep posting them.
Been quite a few years since I rebuilt a bug. Figured I'd come watch your videos to remind myself of what I forgot.. hahaha.
Makes me want to get my hands dirty..... Well... maybe not.. hahaha!! Great job Darren!
Nice job Darrin, even though you weren't feeling good, and hope you're doing well now after all you've been through. that was fun. c you in AZ. no rain days just rain minutes.
Excellent video bro.hope everything works out for you and the family.God bless
excellent video thanks for posting
very good informatio and videos are great. thaks for share
Thanks for good videos!

Very good video, Thank You for this!
Good stuff Darrin.
Great video.

Looking good buddy.
Great vids Darrin!
I think you might call them "How to assembly VW Beetle Kafer Fusca Garbus engine"
Some good tips there Darrin about the torque wrench. I have seen people put a leaver on the handle.
retrorestore he’s an idiot with that torque wrench, while he was correct about adding a lever to the handle, you should not “double check” your torque.... thanks! you make it look so easy
Very helpful. Love the language :-).

really cool video!!, very informative. Take care
Cool, you make it look easy
Great stuff. Need to replace bearings in mine as it’s been ran with the clutch cable too tight, so wrecked the thrust bearing.
like the vids...Iam going to go true the engine as41 vw..and hopefuly do some upgrade. So your vids is helpful dude..
Good stuff!
I'm just guessin' here.
Your favorite toy as a kid was the Erector Set.
Thanks for the video, buddy.
that's what I like.... just the facts jack!
Great videos. I am planning my first build and these will help! What did you paint the case with and what prep work did you do for paint? Thanks.

ive heard you talk about new hardware in a few videos, never have seen you replace the studs which is what will stretch and no the nuts.
Is there a good place to get a complete rebuild kit? I'm just getting started on my 1600. I'd also like to increase the jugs and pistons a bit as well...what would you recommend for a bit of increase in HP but not enough to have to change heads?
I dont mess with engines but the video is still interesting.
What is the best sealant for sealing the 2 half is it is it that black stuff are would silicon be better
What kind of sealant would you use to seal the case together and the six bolts
isn't using a deep well socket the same thing as using a shorter extension on a torque wrench? and also could you do any damage by turning the motor over like that and the conn rods banging into the cylinder ports ?

What brand ofpaint do you use to paint the case? Does it effect the heat transfer capabilities?

Hey Darrin, any tips for a guy rebuilding his first VW motor? I have a Baja with a ruined motor, and I'm rebuilding another one to replace it.
what is the use of not torqueing down the 6 bolts after you put the two engine halves together right away
The aviation material gets applied to gaskets directly, and will be cleaner to assemble with..
Must be one hell of a tough engine design to run after that sort of rough assembly.
it is one hell of an engine... but this was put together fine!
Greetings Darrin. I have a Beetle that needs an engine. In order to save money(I don't have) I am thinking of buying a Short block, including pistons, cylinders, and heads. Do you have any videos on how to finish the rest of the engine from that point on?

was the black on the cases paint or powdercoat? Thanks

Loved part 1 but the missing timing gear in part 2 was a big let down, but still appreciate the hard work
HOW MUCH COMPRESSION DO NEED WITH A 1776 ARE 18OOS IN A STREET MOTOR
cool!
Hey there. Wood you no my vw 1600 motor smokes on number 2 bank thanks .good vids man
ok have a ?I have a motor I just got done almost and with out the flywheel on it has a lot of end play is this normal or do I meed to tear back down
Time for a new camera Dazz, gota get into the hd quality :)
what's the silicone brand name you use Darrin?
How much do you charge for a 1600cc lower end build stock?
I thought the torques are supposed to be 25 ftlbs and 14 ftlbs respectively re the large and small bolts/nuts? i.e. per the Bentley Book. ????? Or is that for a different size motor?

For future note, ... you should not "paint" a VW case! 😱😝😁🤪🤣👍👍🇺🇲
Why did you install the 6 main case nuts upsidedown? Isn't the red stuff on the nut sealer.
I believe it's thread-locking material - prevents vibrations from loosening the nuts. Goes on the outside because on the inside it would eff-up your torque readings.
do you need to add oil/lube under the thrust bearings and main bearings? or do you just put the lube on top?
Brandon Acosta do not put oil under bearings
Normally you don't paint the engine case. These are air cooled engines made from magnesium to make them breath easier. When you paint the crankcase you take that ability away.
Hellowwww Gracey
What pulley is that?
Do you paint all your motors
Never seen anybody beat a case together, that is not the way to bring the case halves together!
You only put the sealer on one case bolt. You put it on the washer but not the case to bolt location.
Nice video, I was curious to know if you've ever done Chevy rods and journals something we've always done and we have zero complaints prefer it over the vw rods and journals if you have tried it how did you like it?
Nelson Clyse
Hey Darrin, what do you recommend to to seal case halves ? i heard you mention silicone?
I am using permatex ultra grey at the moment for high vibration applications.
@@vwdarrin ok thanks for reply. Like ya work
where you are? i need a motor !! for a 74 kghia
did vw s for ten yrs when the num 3 exh valve breaks and hits the piston and bends the rod you can straien the rod dont believe me well a super beetle strut rod is the same size as the rist pin ok bend the rod as close as you can run the strut rod into the god rod and try to get it into the one u just straiend wount go bend it some more it will go just takes time done many its a cheap fix need to get the loose stuff out of the motor turn it over many times it will work sorry so long
part one was really good education show part 2 is not step by step at all thanks anyway
surprised you don't have a better engine stand
I cant find part 3
hat is earl what are you referring to?
Where are you located
Hi Darrin, how do I get in touch with you to build a engine for my 64 beetle?
email andrea andreab@thegourmetchocolatier.com or text 386-216-4626
you should never paint the air-cooled engine if you don't improve your lubrication and cooling system considerably
it has no effect on cooling , i can take you for a ride in my bus the cylinder head temp stays at 250 i have a two temp gauge one on right & left i also monitor oil temperature , heat is a byproduct of a poor tune
Wheelonthebas
I just added positive comments , why have they disappeared ?
