I have non-turbo Ford vehicles. I use 5w-30 after doing research.
What do you have and mileage?
They also learned that by lighting the oil weight they can reduce the piston ring tension to reduce friction. Its all a mathematical friction loss game.
So, explain why, in the dual injected (both direct and port injected) 5.0L Coyote, Ford recommends 5W20 from 2018-2020, but beginning in 2021-current, Ford began recommending 5W30 for the dual injected 5.0L Coyote. This is why I’ve began running 5W30 in my 2019 5.0L Coyote. Plus, the fact that I could smell gasoline in my oil catch can was another big reason why I switched to 5W30.
Gas in oil is due to direct injection and start/stop technology. Knowing fords past history of making oil galleries smaller, good chance they have made it larger to be inline with competitors
@@repairvehicle Oil galleries? They haven’t changed any engine internals. And, I took auto stop/start off my truck long ago. I agree about the direct injection, especially in a 12:1 compression 5.0L.
@Brian-ni5xe , how do you know that they have not changed engine internals?
Been running 5w-30 in my 2017 5.0 for 50+ thousand miles now, keeps her quieter too
@colbybaker6042 what brand? How often do you change?
The NA 5.4 Triton 3V version always called for 5W-20 (regardless of country). The more recent 4V version (for example the E-series) uses 5W-30. Ford E-series never came with the Triton 3V version. But, 5W-30 probably won't hurt the 3V version.
Brother absolutely fantastic guidance owners need to be educated anyone who doesn't follow your instruction well they have no one to blame but themselves. 👍

Ford recommends 5w 20 up to 2020 and 5w 30 for 2021 5.0 engines. Why did they change? Is this the same engine, or was something changed? Just wondering if 5w 30 in my 2019 would be ok. Thanks. I live in South Texas.
Did you watch video without skipping?
2015 F350 6.2L, 6-speed AT, 4wd, SRW, Reading tool body, also set up to plow, just bought it. I live in the NE USA and it gets around 10-30 degrees F in the winter here. I think I will run 5w20 in winter and 5w30 in the warm season. Thoughts?
Nothing wrong with what you have proposed. Keep in mind that quality of oil makes a big difference on equipment life.
hey i put 50/50- 5w20 and 5w30. also viscosity is a range! some oils one brand 20 viscosity may be almost 30 viscosity of other brand
Mixing viscosity is actually worse. Don't do that. Use 5w30 because is thicker and lubricates better within spec.
I have expedtion 2013 my manual says 5w20 and I lived in very hot city 40c to 50c, every time I changed oil technicians on regular oil shop recommended 5w30, they says don't follow user manual you are in hot climate, what's your advice please? Switch or stay with manual?
I would stay with factory recommended viscosity but I would use high quality oil and change it more often
@@repairvehicle 5w 20 is known to not handle high heat well
Who says it’s not known to handle heat? Are you using 70s technology conventional oil?
You have to buy a quality synthetic oil@@reesespieces5850
I have a Ford 3.5 Duratec non turbo engine. It have 10 years and 130k miles. I’ve recently changed to 5w20 pennzoil platinum full synthetic. The owners manual recommends 5w20 but on a family trip in the high mountains on high load the low oil pressure alarm kicks on but I turn off the vehicle, after turning ir on and go the alarm shuts off that’s the only time I’ve seen that code. I want to know if I can use 5w30 mostly because i don’t know what kind of oil my mechanic was using he says that 5w20 but I don’t know. Before this oil change with pennzoil, my mechanic was doing all the maintenance but I don’t know if the change of oil brand can affect or the technology since this is made by natural gas. In my country is hot all the time of the year, the local dealer uses 10w30 but I think that is too much. I don’t care about fuel mileage I want the engine to last as long as possible. So 5w30 wouldn’t be a problem?
This video has good answers Why oil pressure drops? Thicker oil is not solution is just a problem cover up.

Conventional or true synthetic oil? I am not referring to full synthetic
Here in FL I use 5w30
I'd say the extra viscosity that comes with 5w30 is better on higher mileage vehicles that don't have the tighter tolerances of a newer engine. Just my intuition. I'm not a mechanic.
Good point if vehicles have 200k miles and neglected
@@repairvehicle my car has 75k miles on it, Fusion 1.5 Turbo Ecoboost, but the previous owner was neglected, he added cheap oil to it causing a ticking in camshaft, a mechanic advised me to change the 100% Synthetic Amsoil 5W-20 that I have added 2 weeks ago to fight the dirty engine to full synthetic 5w-30 of Ravenol, but first using Liqui Moli’s flushing oil, do you recommend to proceed ?
I am not familiar with liqui moli flush. With neglected engine my recommendation is to continue to use amsoil so that it keeps cleaning and keeps it clean.

@@repairvehicle thanks for replying, appreciate your comment.
I don’t know, confused, there’s definitely different fronts! I mean I added Amsoil based on recommendations, read that Castrol Edge 0w-20 and 5w-20 are better too, but two engine mechanics recommended Ravenol since the German has an official company as importer but Amsoil is less known here in Iraq and has no official/big company as importer, that’s why a mechanic suspects the Amsoil that I found it hard to be probably fake (filled with Amsoil label sticked), (and the Castrol Edge here is not original since it is not made in the UK but in Turkey), that’s why I purchased Ravenol 5w-30 but haven’t added yet and haven’t purchased Liqui Moly flushing oil yet, I have read that 5w-30 is good for hot climate, here in Iraq it’s pretty hot and sunny in the summer but today is 21 February, with 17 C degrees as maximum in the daylight and 3 C degrees as minimum at night, cold at nights and early morning, considered winter, so I hesitated to change the 5w-20 to 5w-30, do I feel right ? Or the current temperature has nothing to do with 5w-30 ?
What’s your view on flushing oil in general?
For FIesta Duratec 1.25 i use Liqui moly 5w30 special tec F , can i switch to Castrol magnatec 5w30 A5 ?? i see that the castrol have good additif compared with liqui moly.
How do you know Castrol has good additives?
@@repairvehicle For exemple they said that Castrol MAGNATEC clings like a magnet to the vulnerable metal surfaces in your engine during warm-up. The unique patented molecule in DUALOCK Technology then locks together with the other MAGNATEC molecule, forming a forcefield that provides 50% better protection from warm-up wear and re-start wear. but with liqui moly you should buy the Ceratec additif.
Do they have lab results or pictures of the engine components compared to none magnates oil?

@@andrewdupon9102 link doesn’t work and you didn’t answer my question
My issue is slightly different. I own a 2000 Ranger with 190,000 ,miles on it. Last time I bought oil for an oil change, the folks at Auto Zone and Advance told me that Ford has switched the grade form 5W-30 to 5W-20. I thought it would be risky to change at this point in time, but I switched anyway to the 5W-20. Now, two oil changes later, I've noticed I'm burning a quart of oil every 500 miles, when I used to burn half a quart every 2000. Does anyone know what's up with that, I would like to know? I am however going to change back to the 5W-30 right away. Not going to even wait for the next oil change. ( I suspect it may be a ploy by the auto industry to get the big old gas guzzlers off the road and to buy their overpriced gas guzzling new models.) What's your opinion, anybody? Toss me a bone as I would like to know your thoughts and if this change has effected your vehicle.
All I know is that in 2000 they tried to "make cars/trucks more fuel efficient"...so they told manufactures switch to a thinner oil. I think it's a scam
If it is conventional oil or the full snyth type 3 base that is made from conventional oil ,that is your problem with 20w oil and the video states it also as he explains why the heat makes cheaper oils too thin.... Just get Amsoil Signature Series because Amsoil is the only 100 Percent True Synth based oil. and it probably will not happen anymore ,get a bottle of oil flush and use it before a change to get that old dirty oil out of it, ,get two oil filters, a cheaper one and the best one ..Use the cheap one first and change it after 500 miles because of the older oil and sludge you have in the engine will be cleaning itself out by the new oil and then ,put on the best filter and top your oil level off and go for up to 15k for a change ..I use a 0w20 Amsoil signature series in a 2012 Nissan 4 cylinder with nearly 190k,,no problem's at all with any oil burning because the true synth oil helps to keeps a superior seal on the piston rings and cylinder walls. Your oil burning should stop after that .

I owned a Ford Focus 2.0 powershift, with 120k km down in Brazil and the manual indicates 5w20. However, on all oil changes, the mechanic advises to use 5w30, and I followed them. The oil is from Motorcraft. Do you think I should follow the user manual? What a “high-quality” oil do you recommend?
Diesel engine? How often do you change oil?
I want to know your answer too
@@repairvehicle ive done the same but for gasoline, 5.4l 212495 miles running 5-w30 motocraft and the oil is changed often.
@@repairvehicle he's talking about the Duratec 2.0L engine, FlexFuel (can use both gasoline and/or ethanol) with direct injection.
5w-30 is great choice for direct injection, unless it’s operated in extremely cold weather then thinner oil is a must
How can I get an oil test?
From what?
5w-30 protects better and is the best overall balanced viscosity. I know an engine builder that uses that over 5w-20 for over a decade with no ill effects as long as the oil pressure is within range.
In what engine 5w-30 protects better?
@@repairvehicle almost all of them that are water cooled.
I run 0w-20 for 10k miles and 12 months and have zero wear on my v8 engine driving highway, city and stop and go. Sometimes trips are only few miles and engine never gets to operating temperature. I have verified via oil analysis more than once. Why I would I use 5w-30 when I get zero wear with 0w-20? So that I have more wear on my engine?
@@repairvehicle If your engine starts to overheat for whatever reason (loss of coolant) then 5w-30 will protect better than 0w20. If you ain't comfortable with that then 0w30 would be a good choice too.
My cars don’t have problems with overheating. I do preventive maintenance and don’t wait for it to start overheating and do something about it.

@@_HSV_ how do you tell what provides adequate protection? What criteria are you using to determine what viscosity provides protection?
2018 3.5 eco boost calls for 5w30
Off course due to fuel dilution. In few thousand miles oil becomes 0w-20
CAFE drives this viscosity recommendation.
Partially cafe
I'd be comfortable running a zero to 5W-20 in a 0W-8 or 16 rated vehicle, and zero to 5W-30 in a vehicle that recommends 0W-20. Why? Because it's all BS CAFE standards. These modern loose piston rings with direct injection and even turbos are diluting these poor, over-worked, water thin motor oils with fuel. Doing a 'hundred' oil changes every year to combat that isn't realistic. Stepping up one grade of viscosity will slow the degradation.

Why Mobil?
Ford engineers vs backyard mechanics, Ford got my vote!
That’s why you still broke and in debt. Keep supporting ford engineers
@repairvehicle Acceptable advice. So, we shouldn't necessarily listen to Ford engineers. Well, then I suppose changing to a 0W-30 in cold months, then 5W-30 in warm shouldn't hurt a direct injected, severe fuel diluting 2.0 liter, naturally aspirated Ford EcoSport engine. It's manual calls for 5W-20 and accepts 0W-20 in cold winters. I'm going to NOT listen to the engineers this time.
I don't need fancy oil lab analysis. I can't afford any more service of any kind. I already definitively know that it badly dilutes the oil with fuel with my sense of smell and touch, and I also know that I can't do many oil changes every year. It's not feasible nor affordable for me. Am now doing oil changes for my family and friends because no one can afford this economy anymore as it is.

Why do you think ford engineers want you to keep your car for next 10 years and trouble free?

Yes they do but it's a minimum recommended requirement. You can use a proven better quality oil as long as you use the same viscosity this is key.
