Great advice. I do the same thing every time. I also keep a can of boiled Linseed Oil handy and rub down the wooden handles. Works wonders for extending the life of the handles and keeps them from drying out and getting splintered. I really enjoyed seeing someone else do this stuff haha. Most people would never even consider maintaining a shovel anymore. Thumbs up!
Nice video. Good savvy advice & tips. I worked construction for years and never new to sharpen a shovel till I borrowed my irrigation contractor's tool, and was blown away how easy it is to dig and slice through sod & roots. Now everything is sharpened in my garage.

Best garden tools are the older ones - better metal. All too many tools today are manufactured from inferior metal. I use boiled linseed oil on the hardwood handles - no splinters that way. Thanks for the excellent video with many useful tips.
PA Lawn Guy. Great information. I saw once that a bucket with enough depth and sand to cover the tool working end. The sand is saturated with a 30 weight oil and the landscape person, Gardening by the Yard, just easily wiggled the tool working end into the sand and out and the tool was oiled from rusting. Thought you might want to think about that idea/process. I would use a 5 gallon bucket about 40 % full of sand and have a lid to keep it clean and free from spilling. Great info on which side of a tool was to be sharpened.
Hi, thank you for this video. I have very few tools that I use for my yard work but after I use them, I hate to admit, I just stack them up in the garage without a thought to cleaning them. Now I will take better care of them.

I wrap each tool head (eg shears, file) in an old oil-impregnated rag to prevent rust and keep them lubricated. Cheap veg oil is as good as anything and doesn't contain minerals harmful to plants. I use reclaimed elastic bands the postman drops on the sidewalk to hold the rag in place. Washroom linen towel roll that is past its best can be reclaimed from washroom hygiene companies and is the ideal size for lawn edgers, files, shears, rakes. Also great for polishing glass in the greenhouse.

When farming, my Dad would smear a liberal coating of axle grease on the shiny part of the tractor plow hoe blade after plowing for the season. Sharpening your Axes with a 14 Deg edge is ideal. I learned, you take good care of your tools and they will take good care of you. Thx. These days in the throw away world, people have no idea on how to maintain their tools. Stockup with all these hand tools. When the power goes out for 10 years, these tools will be worth more than Gold. I learnedalot of this toolmaintenance working on a Fire Dept. Our lives depended on good working tools. Linseed oil was liberally used on all FD Tools.

What do you do when it gets to cold to work in landscaping cuz it got to 28° today here In Illinois. Do you do snow removal?
Have you considered using an angle grinder with a flap wheel? It might save some time. It might also be too aggressive, I don't know.

Very good tips that I will begin to apply. Is the file the only way to sharpen them, or is there a faster way to tune them up ?
You could use an angle grinder or die grinder. However, you may remove too much metal or overheat it making the edge more brittle. Once you have the edge a regular pas with a file is all that's required, power tools are helpful for the first sharpening.

do you use the grub hoe to make the flower beds or do you use a tiller
What's the best coating for wooden handles on long handled tools eg YD spades, forks, rakes and hoes. Tung oil? Danish oil? Teak oil? Yacht varnish? Exterior varnish? Oh the wood is generally Ash in the UK but with Ash dieback those will become rarer, sometimes Hickory.
I used raw linseed oil on some handles that were graying. Lovely finish.
Are you suppose to push the file or pull it? I've seen it done both ways. I normally pull the file on the edge, not pull it.

Just use pegboard to mount them. Yes, if you have a pickaxe or other heavy tool like a sledgehammer, you may need more than pegboard to support it, but pegboard makes much better use of the wallspace.
Better to put up a $19 sheet of pegboard. Why?
a. It has 32 square feet of flexible storage you can instantly rearrange by moving the pegs
b. It doesn't waste the wall space like this does (look between the long handles at the unused space on the wall), so now you can mount small tools like hammers and small garden tools along with all the other misc. that you can now find in a glance and grab in an instant instead of digging for it in a drawer or piled on a shelf
c. It takes less time to put up than this since you don't need to do all the additional mods to hold the tools: screw (3) 1x2" furring strips that are 8' long onto the wall where the studs are, one at the top, middle and bottom of where you'll mount the 4x8' sheet of pegboard turned sideways, then use 3/4" wood screws to attach the pegboard to the furring strips while a friend holds it in place. Whala, you're done. It literally took me longer to arrange all the tools on the pegboard than it took to put it up.
d. You'll actually add resale to the home.
Oh, and be smart, mount the pegboard high, even 4" down from the 8' ceiling. Why? Because up there "high" is where you'll hang all the LONG HANDLE stuff that you don't need to reach high to grab because of the handle. Everything else will be right at easy reach height.
H. Freight Tools has 50 pegboard hooks for $7, just no reason not to go this much better, more flexible way.
I can think of a reason not to go that way. Pegboard is ugly and cheesy looking. And I can't imagine how hanging a piece of pegboard would increase the resale value of your house. In fact, there was some pegboard hanging in the storage area of a house we sold a few years ago (there when we bought it), and I took it down before putting the house on the market, because it was -- ugly and cheesy looking!
What do you recommend for wooden handle tools that are left outside? Yes, I know "don't leave them outside in the first place!" well that is not an option. I have an uncle who has no storage space and keeps his tools hung up on his trailer exposed to the elements. In this situation do you recommend linseed oil or maybe just go with a water sealer? Thanks.
Boiled Linseed oil for the wood parts. If not used during winter, a coating of vegetable oil for the metal parts at the end of fall or start of winter. If the metal parts will never be used in the garden, then isntead of vegetable oil you could use on the WD40s that have a secondary oil like WD40 -Silcone, or WD40-grease

Why not have and use stainless steel bladed tools with plastic / composite handles, and you don't have to clean and oil them often saving time?

I don't use a file to keep my tools sharp I use a scythe stone.
Sulfuric acid will sharpen your files.
