- The 1970s showed that, tactically, ideas could take football almost anywhere. It was an intoxicating time when the beautiful game truly became just that.

⚽⚽⚽ Tifo Football, formerly uMAXit Football, taking an illustrated look into the beautiful game. ⚽⚽⚽ - Sport
Love this series, but two things that probably got cut but should be mentioned from the 1978 cup: Argentina-Peru game and Cruyff not playing in 1978 are key factors too.
Yes, if Cruyff hadn't been kidnaped in his own house in Barcelona, maybe the Netherlands could have won that final, that they almost won it anyway, with a shot in the post in the last minute.
They did another video on the politics and background of 1978 WC. As for the final, in Europe there is selective amnesia about the game and tendency to recall just the header that hit the post (Resenbrink I think), ignoring the fact that Argentina dominated that final, created far more chances than the Dutch and hit woodwork too.
This has been one of the greatest episodes ever made of these. So in-depth and helps build upon knowledge previously gained from other videos.
Thanks Damon, it's a beautiful period of football to cover! - Danny
This was the era when England got left behind (tactically and technically) by the other top nations. We've not managed to bridge the gap since. Not qualifying for the 74 and 78 world cups meant we never got to play against the like of Germany, Brazil and Holland from that era. If we'd played them at a World Cup maybe we'd have been influenced by their approach and not gone down the one dimensional, physical route that characterised English football during the 80's.
I would agree that they've been lagging tactically, but not technically. England had some great players in every recent decade who were let down by coaches (and the FA). Just look at the Golden Generation; they could have played many different types of football - the players were that good.
+Master You had the coaches - Eriksson and Capello won trophies galore at their clubs and were considered among the very best coaches in world football.
Kempes was phenomenal
Joe's voice is lovely. Combined with that gentle music, I feel like he's telling me a bedtime story!
Argentina did not rely on questionable referring or a violent crowd. They won because their tactics we're superior
And because Peru allowed them to win. Doping your players also help.
What a perfect and brilliant explanation. No doubt, the best CZcams channel regarding football.
Very kind sir, thank you! - Danny
Great video! As a Dutchie it makes me a bit sad though
Thank you mate, sorry to make you sad though! - Danny
uMAXit Football haha no problem guys, cheers!
Gotta love how british people loves to say that 78's Cup was fixed (yeah, it really was) but says ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the bizarre show that 66's Cup was to give England it's trophy.
(And this is coming from a Brazilian)
This little detail aside, great video as always! Great job!
Cauê Moalli It was fixed
@@toddreyes2487 The Brazilians couldn't handle the two footed tackles from Bulgaria and Portugal, the brutality killed the squad. Carlos Alberto Torres said that this type of brutal football or power football as he liked to call it, helped change Brazil and their resilience to that type of nasty football.
Both world cups were fixed.
Fuck you
finally, someone who understands how Italy played in 1970, that Valcareggi did not play a five-man defence...Italy showed plenty of attacking initiative in certain games but, as you say, there were times they showed too much caution...the weakness with the Italian strategy was that their man-marking system was too rigid and Brazil exposed this in the second half with Jairzinho crossing to the left, dragging Facchetti with him...this left a huge gap in the left side which Carlos Alberto moved into...Zagallo also noted they were not marking Gerson in midfield so at half time he told his players to give the ball to Gerson as much as possible...Gerson scored the second and set up the third
Great breakdown. BUT I truly believe the best team in the 1974 World Cup was easily Gorski's White Eagles. The most electric, fast attacking team around. Top scorer Lato. Only for West Germany to play a match that shouldn't have been played in swamp conditions. Beckenbauer himself said the best team by far was Poland and they only won because West Germany were literally kicking the ball from puddle to puddle. Sadly the forgotten wonder team.
in every interview he gives about the '74 World Cup, Paul Breitner says Poland were the best team, not the Germans or the Dutch
These videos gives us so much knowledge of the beautiful game. Before and present. Thx Umaxit foo tball
Ahh the 70's, all so new, yet so old. Things were interesting back then. Modern Tactics were in the infancy. So many hallmarks we see today are a results of what happened back then.

This channel has grown.
And the in-depth you put into this video, was just astonishing.
I would love a video dedicated to the 1970 Brazil side
Great video, as usual! However, I think it's unfortunate that you just brushed on the German side of 74. What were their best qualities? How did they reach the final, despite a massive dispute between players and the DFB before the tournament? Looking forward to Whiteboard Extra.
Once again this channel lifts the mispronunciations of players' names to a true art form.
another great video guys, well done
Thanks Robinho! - Danny
Brilliant as always.
Thank you! - Danny
Another great video really enjoying your series on the history of the World Cup you were correct with Argentina getting questionable calls but amazing series
Thanks pal, we're glad you're enjoying the series, Plenty more to come - Danny
Such a shame there was a rain in semis in 1974. Poland would have beaten Germany easly, we got the best wings in this WC.
Love your videos . keep on going
We will, thanks mate! - Danny
Best video of possibly the best time in football
always enjoy these videos.
Although the Dutch team played the by far most attractive football in 1974, I think it's bit to giving the german team only 15s of speech. You didn't even show their line-up. That's a bit unfair for maybe the best german team ever.
Battist Oberhößel the best German team was Die Mannschaft 2014
Big JellyEel 2014 was a great team, but the 1974 had the two best players in German football history with Gerd Müller and Franz Beckenbauer. And I'm not even a Munich fan.
One can't say a team was better because it had two legends playing for it. People will remember the likes of Lahm, Klose & Neuer from 2014. 2014 team had much more quality all round too. & they were the strongest team in the competition.
Big JellyEel Yes they were the strongest team in the competition. But because there was no great team that year. Argentina barely won their games if it wasn't for Messi's last minute goals. France, Spain, Brazil, every team was underachieving. In 1974 Germany beat the best Dutch team they might ever have been.
Battist Oberhößel exactly my point the Oranje were the best team of 74 & Germany's best team is 14. The Dutch were beaten because Germans outsmarted them, but 2014 team was great overall. We're pretty nostalgic about things and it's probably we remember Germany's 74 as greatest team ever but by time, when memories of '14 age up, pretty sure we shall all have the same nostalgia about 14.
Wonderful episode ! The start of the modern era of football, the colour appear ! :p
Beautiful isn't it! - Danny
great as always
Do tactics explained on Palmers FC! Pretty unique formation for that lot.
Great shout - Danny
@@Tifo Tactics have improved vastly since the 70`s though, right?
Palmeiras?
Great video man,can you please make a video about the fall of liverpool fc under graeme souness?
Italy's Mazzola and Rivera were very similar and could not play together so each play one-half. They were like the modern day Totti and Del Piero.
Rivera was the better player at the time, BO winner in 1969 I believe. It was criminal to pick Mazzola over him. As for Totti and ADP, they were terrific when played together for Italy, but Trapattoni was way too cowardly to do that often.
Mazzola was more athletic, while Rivera was more technical. Vulcareggi thought was that more athletic Mazzola would start, while Rivera came on when opponents were tired, allowing more time and space
Whats the program you guys use to make the graphics? I see other channels use it too and I wanna use for school and coaching
Catenaccio seems to be a precursor to the now often used 3-5-2 system
I have to take issue with anyone who states Brazil couldn't have been beaten. Its very possible the England side of that year would have run them very very close.
No arguments that Brazil of 1970 are the best side I've seen but Brazil of 1982 ran them a very close second and look were they got.
In 1970 Brazil gave the ball away too much and their shot conversion stats were pretty bad.
@umaxit make a video about the donnarumma drama happening
1970-1986 was the most important period of world cup in terms of chane in football styles.
1:14 El Catenaccio
6:11 1978
any chance you could make a video on the rise and fall of Coventry city?
It's been requested a lot. Just waiting on Sam from the team (A Coventry fan) to give us the all clear ;D - Danny
uMAXit Football Awesome! looking forward to the video!
uMAXit Football COVENTRY ARE SICK CHEKERTRADE TROPHY HOLDERS MORE RECENT SILVER WARE THAN MAN CITY N LIVERPOOL
Mexico's higher cities are not hot at all. The rest of the analysis was fascinating. Very interesting decade for football.
Sean Bolkcom so in the summers its cold ? lmfaoo plus times change so back then it was probaly more hot
1978 was the first World Cup I ever watched but as an 8 year old I was very young and can't remember much of it, although my overriding memories of it are, no England at the tournament, the unlucky Peru and the brilliant goals from Cubillas, the ticker tape final in Buenos Aires, the terrible Scotland World Cup song 😆 along with if I remember correctly, the disgraced Willie Johnston being sent home due to his failed drugs test.
do one for ac milan 2007
Fabricio Rosso My guess is that, when the next video arrives, the writer will give Maradona his dues. The most single-handed, no pun intended, dominance of an individual willing his team to tournament glory given the lack of a supporting cast.
In my opinion, it wasn´t like that, yes Maradona was fucking brilliant in that tournament, and the best player by far, but the other players in the team were all pretty good, of course, not in the level of Maradona, but during the tournament the whole team played very well, it wasn´t just ¨pass it to Diego and let him score¨ (except the second goal against England).
Gerd Muller had to be eventually mentioned
Just wanted to point out in the 1978 world cup there was a fall out between Cruyff and Happel, which resulted in Cruyff not being part of the 1978 Holland team.
Great video and you were right to note that the 1978 world cup was ridiculous. Argentina cheated all the way through.
May be nitpicky but shouldn't it be pronounced Ree-nus Mi-chels?
Axel7043 And the Dutch?
1974
5 points of Holland
1 point West German : WG had superb players with organisation
LOL, no offense :))
eyyy
Brilliant, and those were times when the defenses were based on man marking, and the tackles were done with both feet.
Pele was a perfect player who could release the ball quick with an amazing pass accuracy, and either could hold and dribble while looking for a player in a better position..
Pele was far better than Maradona in my opinion. Diego couldn't play in modern soccer, as his only great skill relayed on dribbling.
Great video as always guys, keep up with the good work (:
sadly I have never seen one of them play
Pele does not have more pass accuracy than Diego at all, nor even more determinant on assist. Actually Diego was more like a creator, Pele more like a scorer.
Pele had everything as a foootballer
Lisand Leyra I saw Maradona in a charity match a few years ago and I was shocked at how good his passing was, seeing that you mostly hear about his dribbling. I can only imagine how good his passing went with his great dribbling when he played. Looking at some of his numbers, you can clearly see that he wasn't the same type of player as Pele, like some people think.
A Brief History of Julen Lopetegui Please!
Ganja Caliphate lollllll
tiagovalen what lol he did amazing with Spain youth teams and okay with Porto (they were dogshit after he left) now with national team, I wanna know who he played under and learnt tactics from
The two best sides to have never won the world cup both lost to the Germans in the final
Maybe look at Everton's 5 at the back at times last season E.g the Man City 4-0 win
Argentina 78. And the era of match fixing begins.
you are very wrong about Brazil 1970 beeing the best team ever, that title belongs to the England team of 1966. That team is still the best ever World Champions through human history. They were awesome and no other player has ever scored a hat trick in a World Cup-final
Thanks for sharing your opinion on the matter, we like to hear what people have to say - Danny
no, Brazil 1970 produced the best individuals in one team, they worked as the greatest unit ever, they took apart an Italian 4-1 in the final.
they won every single match they played, even the qualifying fixtures.
don't forget that the 1970 team also didn't have garrincha who is possibly the second best Brazilian player of all time.
also the 1970 world cup is regarded as the greatest world cup tournament of all time.
@Aiksupporter Good joke mate
that doesn't mean anything, England 1966 played a much more beautiful game and England won all the games exept the first one, 0-0 against Uruguay. Englands players were much greater and powerful then the ugly horsedicksucers of Brazil
AIKsupporter England 1966 was dominated by physical play that's why they won.
In 1970, Brazil played a more beautiful attacking play with the 424 formation.
England won the World Cup with an offside goal.
Great video and you were right to note that the 1978 world cup was ridiculous. Argentina cheated all the way through.
