Is this something to do with my end? The captions keep coming on default even though I done have thst set thst way. I have tried everything. Does your channel have some kind of default caption mode turned on. I hate tgis because anyone can turn than on on their own but I want to erratic all modern crap on my screen and I don't watch film to read. If it was a foreign movie or a silent film with its own subtle that would be different. But that ugly crap popping up constantly is stressful and exactly what I'm trying to avoid in life. Along with lights that tell me I'm using the thing I'm using a beeps that tell me I did what I just did.
Is it stuck that way on your end or am I just missing something and driving myself crazy?
I was born in 1965, and in the 1970s the BBC used to show Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers during the summer holidays. Good times!
Ditto: I was also born in 1965 and also remember loving watching it as a kid during the summer holidays. It was obviously old even then! 😊
I'm amazed at how good the condition of the film. Someone did an awesome job preserving it back in the day.
There are several computer-generated effects that are layered in such a way that "cleans up" the erosion of the quality in the film. The original film looks nothing like this. It's not just color.
@@JasonKifner thanks Jason for the explanation. Yeah, it just looked so perfect. Now I know why!
For once colorization is a good thing
Dr. Hans Zarkov, a great Earth scientist and inventor of Booty shorts.
For something that's filmed almost a hundred years ago, it's pretty good.
Yep, the effects might be kinda laughable today, but they still knew how to tell a story, and managed to keep the audience 'engaged', with characters you could actually care about!
7:15 - "you'll never see dale arden again." - perhaps my favourite line in any flash gordon franchise - i do so love when villains helpfully talk to themselves for the benefit of the audience.
Despite some dated effects and over the top acting, this is still a really great serial. You can totally see where George Lucas got his inspiration for Star Wars, as you have the opening crawls and later there’s a floating city
Agreed star wars is a great film 😊
Yeah...neon....oooh
Star wort can't hold a candle to the greatness of this serial.
Flash gordon had:
The dungeonish lair of Ming (deathstar)
The desert moon
The jungle moon
The ice moon
The sky city
I think that Flash Gordon can be brought back with the star treatment. Alex Raymond wrote great stories that inspired the epic tales in these serials and in franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars. I may be in a minority but I don't think the 1980 film did Flash Gordon and the legacy of Alex Raymond justice. From 1936 to 1940, the writers, producers, and directors at Universal Studios were doing the best that they could with the technology available and the mindset of that time. But, 1980 is after the first Star Wars film, Superman: The Movie, Star Trek: The Motion Picture and the same year that Superman II, and Empire Strikes Back were released. Flash Gordon 1980 could've been better. There's no excuse. The effort put in here in these old serials is more apparent to me.
How wonderful to see it in color finally! Thank you! Dr. Tim Rasico
I'm glad he didn't go over-the-top with it. The muted purples and browns are just right.
Jean Rogers and Priscilla Lawson = ❤
Still better than anything Hollywood can produce today.
That's a matter of opinion.
@@douglasfreeman3229 Of course...but the collapse of ticket sales for movies can't be ignored although they will.
Absolutely
2:23 My thoughts exactly XD
lol
Vive Mao tsé twng

Poor Zarkov, forced into wool bathing drawers at his age!
Those are his splendid BATTLE SHORTS
He had great legs it was it how he got the job.
Saw this as a kid in the 70ths still fun to lookat 46 years later😁
Filmmakers of today need to take note that this is what pure entertainment looks like.
Not much of a story though, and the characters lack depth and are stereotypical.
@@douglasfreeman3229 That did not matter to me as a grammar school kid watching these on WPIX TV with Chuck McCann hosting. Some years of maturity later, the serial provided new insights which for me were centered on Priscilla Lawson and also Jean Rogers which demanded my watching this serial again with a new awareness..
How do you think you know George Lucas Steven Spielberg Stan Winston James Cameron what do you think they got the ideas from?😊😅😮
@@douglasfreeman3229 my friend you don't understand nothing this was meant for a different time a different generation so probably a jet extra like you wouldn't understand no way so get the hell out my internet you don't recognize quality entertainment when you see it now get off my internet😊
@@kennethdegruchy5503 the guy above you he don't understand what this is all about this was meant for a different time and a different generation so I have to check his ass and check him good that he don't need to be in he need to move his ass and carry his ass but for those of us who got good memories of going to the theater every Saturday morning or afternoon whatever you know and had to come back next week to watch the next installment this was a magical time for me back in my youth
This was why we kids all went to the movie theatre on Saturday mornings. Because of the way each episode ended with the life of the good guys in danger, we called these short movies "Cliff Hangers."
When my mom was a kid, they were playing these serials on TV.
Watched this in the 1950’s reruns they would put on TV. Love the Art Deco styling and sci-fi imagination of things!
What a Universal classic series. I'm nearly 60 now, but I watched these in my School holidays, as a child in England, all those years ago. I'm a universal horror fan, and I also note, that most of the music soundtracks were used from Horror films of the 30s from Universal! Great stuff though, and I'm a great Hammer film especially Horror!!! Thanks and in Colour as well!!! Nigel UK
That moving demon-altar and the dragon-like thing at the end are excellent.
Starting with a children's show called Wondderama on Sunday mornings with Sonny Fox, I have seen this serial many times. I think this colorized version is by far the best! I hope the other chapters will be shown C3.
Do you remember the Ardvaark song ftom WonderRama?
Sniff I miss those days man😊 time never goes back with it goes forward but at least I got some good memories
Bliss...sitting with your mates in the local flea pit on a Saturday morning..munching popcorn ...watching Flash and Mongo...as well as Superman with George Reeves...fabulous days...fabulous memories
Buster Crabbe also played Buck Rogers and Tarzan. He also played Gordon on an episode of Buck Rogers TV show.
YES!,I saw that episode too. I always thought they should've had Buster Crabbe come on the show as a permanent addition. Brigadeer Gordon was a great character!
In 1950-51, at age 5, I appeared on a very early t.v. show, hosted by Buster Crabbe! He briefly interviewed three
boys ( I was the youngest) & afterward, he brought us to the 'control room', where we saw one of his 1940's,
western movies! The studio was very basic & 'primitive' by today's standards! Soon after, Buster's 1936 "Flash
Gordon" serials were shown on t.v., with great enthusiasm! I'll bet Buster would have loved this 'colorized' version! R.I.P.!
First saw Flash Gordon on TV in the early 50's on "Serial Theater" which aired on Sundays at about 11:00 AM or noon. We would get home from church and Sunday school and watch it every Sunday. They also had Ace Drummond, Don Winslow of the Navy and Coast Guard, Tim Tyler's Luck and Radio Patrol serials. We so looked forward every week to Sunday. Flash Gordon was the best of them all.
You have to remember the year, back then this would've seemed shocking in a way, even the films of my youth in the 60's become dated, but it's still pretty cool. Thank you for this.
Wow the princess ain't f****** around she wants flash Gordon in her bedroom as soon as possible 😊😅😮
Gotta thank Star Wars for rediscovering this gem plus Buck Rogers.
And Captain Proton.
I used to see this Sunday mornings, on WGN, back in the early 80's.
Maravilloso. Muchas gracias 👍
Congrats on your great channel and the great movies you have for all of us movie and movie lovers
Excellent series........The fly on Ming is now famous 7:47. Always watched this with my Father when it was Broadcast many years ago.....I am now an old man....
__ but young at hart. Right? (I still am)
Great effects even for now. Enjoyed much
Thanks!
Jean Rogers!
1936... impressive quality. Must be a most expensive serie of that time. The scenary, the clothes, cameras, laboratory, etc. the better of that time
Colouration - marvellous, I only ever saw these episodes in Black & White on Saturday mornings at the local cinema.
8:11 I love simple dialogue that can have such profound implications and possibilities.
When I was 10 years old I used to watch this I just love the episodes
Loved this show as a lil kid! The rocket would fly through the sky, but the rocket would float upward!
it's amazing to see how they where adapting the acting metods and the sounds in the new way o f making films... In this time it feels so funny, but understanding those times, it's very preasant to see.
and to think that George Lucas wanted to remake this but couldn't get (afford) the copyright, so he went ahead and created his own universe.....Star Wars... quite a twist of fate......
Oh wow, I always wanted to see the serials colourized.
Nice to see this back for viewing. Thank you. I have to say black and white is a better delivery. Adds to going back in time.
These old serials were shown on 50's Kansas City TV. The host wore a mask and what looked like a motorcycle cop's uniform. He called himself "Commander 9."
I remember watching these movies when I was a kid some 50 years ago.
The knitted pants! Awesome.
Watched this as a kid and never even dawned on me it was made in 1936. I thought it was made last week.
My mom used to watch it when she was a kid too. She was the one who told me about 1930's movie serials.
Me too when I saw it in late 70s or early 80s as a kid on tv.
This has got to be the first dude in a costume kaiju on film? It predates Godzilla by 15 years.
That monster at the end... Dr Who up until the 90s had worse effects! Amazing stuff.
Very good
That dragon, is strait out of the mind of a little kids drawing of a monster. the coloring is like it is in Crayon. The poor Misunderstood Dragon.
I remember watching these repeat Saturday mornings,on BBC,and king of the rocket men , and Tarzan.
The Flashing Blade on Saturday morning with Champion the Wonder House.
@@garyturner5739 programme were so much better , now it's only cooking programme , it's a blessing scooby doo is on in the morning on itv 2 .to bring some smile , and classic soaps
The Max Von Sydow Ming wouldn't even bat an eye seeing his daughter falling down the pit with Flash.
winderful, like beautiful museumpiece
Colorized flash......IM IN HEAVEN 😃
My first time seeing this! Fun!
You’re in for a good treat. The whole 1936 serial is fun to watch
Luke fights the Rancor at the end.
Good to see this colorised version. Makes it so much better to view.
This was my very first exposure to science fiction. I was 4. I loved it.
Seen them all
May have cd copies,as with Buck Rodgers , Happy child hood days doing the Saturday matinee 🤗👍
Bravo!😊👍
Bang a gong get it on 🎶
It’s like grandma’s chicken soup, the older the recipe the better for you, just like the old movies, no better recipe for your great movie enjoyment.
Gracias
At 19:34 is the rancor scene from Return of the Jedi, Star Wars episode 6! 😮
II remember watching these on WKBW's "Commander Tom" show in the 1960s. Always laughed when the rockets' tail smoke went straight up
19:11 He runs with limpy wrist. Lmao
I saw this on early TV around 1950 my father had learned to repair TVs for his electronic repair shop after the War
Wow for ‘36 this isn’t all that bad. Production value seems on point and the acting isn’t cheese’d up. I can see why generations of people loved this show
I used to watch this growing up in the 70s late night
YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAY FLASH..... let's go
Of all science fiction characters, Ming is the Crux of the world rulers. A great characters and great ruler all at once. I salute Middleton...he handled the role magnificently a gave us one of the best movie villains ever in 😊😊
mind blown
I applaud the attempt, but the colourization is completely unstable and frequently drops out whenever there is more than just slight movement.
I'd like to see these colourized, but this software doesn't seem up to the task.
I thought it was pretty good and it works quite well for this serial.
I agree. Not great, is it?
@@douglasfreeman3229 No, it's not, but then, it is relying on a computer algorithm to do the work.
Computers are wonderful tools, but they cannot think, they cannot assess or evaluate, they cannot intuit.
You give them parameters, and they complete a task within those parameters but if something un-accounted-for occurs, they cannot improvise.
Had the content creator taken on more of the brain work instead of relying on the computer to do it all, the result would have been better because, try as they might, Computers will NEVER replace human ingenuity.
Every afternoon at 5PM, when I was a kid in 1954, I would huddle in front of our blurry new TV and eat these up. I knew they were stupid but they were almost the only space action movies there were. And in those days, when you saw a movie once, that was it.
Can't belive this is 88 years old.
Jeanne D' Arc produced in France was colorized in 1900 by the producer that hand painted black and white film. He later married gal that starred in the movie.
Estos actores si viven tienen 90 años !!😅
I love this movie when I was 10 years old
Very, very pretty girls and not a whale in sight.
oh my God what a movie , how to express your emotions in English , I do not know such a word , but in Russian , hmm , it 's really cool
My first taste of a 1930s serial and, I gotta say, it's an interesting look at the 1930s.
Pernah lihat yg versi layar lebarnya , dalam bentuk video tape betamax , waktu masih kanak 2x , bagus petualangan flash Gordon
Darn awesome for 1936!
Flasch Goordon anos 30 a cores! Incrivel, meu herói dosvGibis!
Roldán el Temerario!
The guys are wearing short shorts but the girls aren't?? Hmpf!
Sadly, they kept Jean Rogers tastefully dressed.
@@scottw5315 That is sad but Pedowood has always been filled with rearenders.
From the beginning this was meant to be for adults. For its time and release during Code Hollywood it was considered terribly sexual. For a B-movie it had a blockbuster budget - $350K USD. That is in 1930s Depression dollars and was unheard of. Note how the Hayes Code grudgingly permitted what would known as a bikini or bare midriff look BUT the actresses had to have their navels covered. Decades later this same problem would come up in Star Trek:TOS. Roddenberry hated that belly buttons had to be covered in the William Ware Theiss wardrobe designs (remember The Gamesters of Triskelion? Remember the drill Thrall's tin foil bikini? ) To have his revenge Roddenberry did something in his next Sci Fi series; he not only dressed the mutant women in two piece outfits but he gave each woman TWO belly buttons plainly shown on screen - take THAT Standards & Practices! "I Dream of Jeannie" was nearly taken off the air because Eden's belly button showed but they never had the cojones to stand up to S&P the way Roddenberry would.
CCC, I remember you had the entire serial as one long video some time ago. Did it get dropped or something, just curious?
Yes you are correct! But for now this is all we have 👉 czcams.com/play/PL2gsu7VGzgdZgxGHfD3SXqQIiRbeHubYe.html ... more coming soon...
Early version coloriser it uses information in the film and that why it all over the place.
Funny how similar his space ship looks to Musk's landable rocket when it is flying around the sky .
Buster Crabbe. Sigma Chi from USC.
Awesome can you do Buck Rogers next that was the better serial in my opinion.
I thought I simply had unkept facial hair, but it seems I was a lion-man from Mongo all along. Who'd have thought!
📺🎨🤖❓... I assume this was colorized by A.I. ...as it interpreted Flash's ubiquitous bright Red⚡ costume in varying shades of gray...still the overall effect of the added pastel color is very positive giving this olde B & W serial, a soft Art Deco, yet unEarthly ambiance....
I'll tell you this and I'm only fifty- Larry Buster Crabbe cut a real heroic figure..maaaan.
> You have to remember that there was no real space travel when this was made. Nobody knew what traveling thru space was like. All the rocket flight scenes were in atmospheric conditions. And there were no seat belts. Because there were no seats to be strapped into.
Legal!
Trip to Mars 1938
Do you colorize these movies yourself? If you did, what program do you use?
C. Middleton, second greatest villain was 39013, from Daredevils of the Red Circle ⭕!! Poor P. Lawson lost her leg in an accident! Ending her career!!
I see they reused some of the props from the 1931 Frankenstein movie.
Theres no auto target in the future.
WHAT ABOUT 'THE BIRDMEN OF AFRICA' made in the 30's.
Saw it twice on television around 55 years ago and maybe 30 years ago. Can't find it now.
Bat Men of Africa, the feature version of Darkest Africa.
