Neil captured Len’s essence perfectly! It’s a “sweet” portrait because it portrays a sweet man. A contemporary or subversive portrait would have been silly, and done him an injustice
I do wish Tai Shan would stop downgrading pastels. In another heat; he called pastels a 'weird medium', and here he refers to it as a pastel 'sketch'. It was a lovely finished portrait. If I may quote from Marjorie Shelley, Sherman Fairchild Conservator in Charge, Department of Paper Conservation: "Pastel is among the most radiant and fragile of all mediums, and Edgar Degas was one of its foremost practitioners".
Tai should keep his personal bias to himself and be impartial in his judgment.
He also seems to feel threatened by any painter he perceives to be better than he is!
But of course neither one of these so called judges are impartial!
Their pretentious word salad is quite annoying!
OMG so infuriating listening to him speak such nonsense with such misplaced conviction. Pastel is certainly not a simple medium with which to create such a striking and crisp likeness in such a short time. I’ve only just started watching this show and he is driving me nuts every time he opens his mouth. I dread his moronic and self righteous assessment with each portrait.
Wow, Neil captured Len's likeness so quickly ... and Gina's piece was so good...too bad she didn't make the final 3
I love seeing kids in the audience sketching as well!

The pastel portrait and the young girls Posca marker portrait were the best imo.

I've never thought to ask...are the artists allowed to pick their own station & easel site?---Listening to Len speak reminds me of Stanley Holloway in My Fair Lady!---I looked up King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard! Great sound, but I wouldn't want to be the neighbor while they're practicing!
Inga managed to produce a finished piece in the time allotted to them. The others, sadly appeared rushed and incomplete. Neil was very good. All good artists, and deserving of the competition.😊😊😊😊

I vehemently disagree 90% of the time. So do the sitters, who rarely choose the winning painting.

Yeah I remember Nelson Mandela passing in prison. We had to write our views about it in Man and Society class, grade 11,1982.
I hate to tell you this, but Nelson Mandela died in December of 2013. He was 95. … but many do remember him passing away in prison.
Do what now? In 1982 Nelson Mandela was very much alive. He was transferred from Robben Island to Pollsmoor Prison at the time. He was unconditionally released from prison on 11 February 1990 which was international news and he then led South Africa as it's president from 10 May 1994 - 16 June 1999. What on earth were your teachers thinking?

I’m talking about remembering in class with 33 other students my history teacher brings in a tv and a tape. Where we All watched him die from being in prison. Now I contact my classmates to which I still speak to 50 yrs later. Guess what, they have the same memories.

@@JudithBisson Wow. I live in South Africa. IT'S MY COUNTRY'S HISTORY. And it's provable fact. If he died in 1982, explain the fact that he addressed the US Congress on June 1990. Explain how he received the Noble Peace Prize in person in 1993. Explain how he was elected President of South Africa in 1994. Hard to do that if he's dead.
As far as you misremembering yes, it's called The Mandela Effect. It is a type of false memory that occurs when many different people incorrectly remember the same thing. It refers to a widespread false memory that Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 1980s.
This is called Confabulation. Confabulation is a common symptom of mental degeneration diseases that affects memory, such as Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. When someone with dementia confabulates, they are not lying or attempting to deceive. They simply lack the necessary information or awareness to recall a specific memory or event accurately.
Features of the Mandela Effect can include:
*having distorted memories in which some aspects are partially or entirely inaccurate
*clearly remembering entire events that did not happen
several unrelated people sharing similar distorted or inaccurate memories
*The Mandela Effect occurs when a person believes that their distorted memories are, in fact, accurate recollections. They can clearly remember events that happened differently or events that never occurred at all.
