  • 4th round League Cup tie from Anfield in November 1985. The game is famous for a brilliant goal by Jan Molby which for years seemed to have survived only in the memory of those fortunate enough to be there to witness it. Footage of that goal turned up a few years ago, and here are highlights of the game.
It's shot by a single camera with no commentary or replays.
Paul McGrath gave United an early lead before Molby scored 2 goals in a couple of minutes in the second half to win the game.

I was on the Kop that night with my dad and uncle and I have to say that it was one of the most fervent atmospheres I ever encountered at Anfield. Despite being champions 7 times in that decade, we struggled to beat United, who always managed to raise their game. We had waited a long time for this victory and it meant so much.

When the league cup meant so so much, and the players were proper men playing fantastic football, the fans full of passion , standing was for the diehards, seats for the over 50s mainly. Refs allowed , certain, tackles to go , lets say unnoticed, and the coppers were prepared to let us fans have our differences outside the ground, fantastic times and sure beats 80 percent of the crap now a days

We're very lucky to have these pictures because this game wasn't televised - hence no commentary. Apparently it was United who requested that it be filmed.
It seemed like we hadn't beaten United for a long time and despite winning many trophies, United were definitely a bogey side to us.
This was a great season for Liverpool and though we never went on to win this league cup, we finished 1985-86 season with a League and FA Cup double.

Man united started filming their matches from September 1985, missing the first 2 matches. Great for Liverpool fans that they did. Pity Liverpool didnt have the foresight to do the same. Watford were the pioneers of club videos. They started as early as 1980 i believe.

I am probably one of the only people who went to this match but missed Molby's thundercracker because I'd gone for a piss, or something like that. I was 14 and, to this day, can only remember one more occasion with a more feral atmosphere than this one and that was the semi at Goodison. I wasn't at the Chelsea semi in 2005 so I can't compare them, but it's difficult to describe just how raucous it was against United. The fact it was the league cup did not dilute it at all.

Two famous quotes about these games, both a bit silly, but still funny.
Martin Taylor - In games between these two sides the ball is often incidental to what's happening elsewhere. Haha

Great footage it's weird that Liverpool couldn't beat the Mancs at Anfield from 1979-1988 in the league so this was a real bonus when it happened coincidently Ian Rush never scored against the Mancs at all in the eighties so probably part of the reason just like Suarez couldn't score in any of the major games against the other top three in our "almost" season two seasons back probably a major factor it went astray and that included the cups

That was the one. That one in 1990, we had our chances, but we were playing practically at bursting point. Liverpool's technique was way superior that day; they picked us off with ease. We must have learned our lesson, as our win at OT the following month was quality.

Scherben very true that 3-1 at OT and the 6-2 mauling we gave arsenal at Highbury convinced me we were on to something with Fergie. I like many people going to the games at the time were still unconvinced about him (mad as that sounds now) but that season was the one. Yes, handball inside the centre circle.

It's right on the edge of the box. Maybe just outside but if the benefit if the doubt is going against the player who's punches the ball away that doesn't seem too harsh. But obviously I'm biased...

@@DaveWallerLFC Ha ha, I was exaggerating a little for effect. Clearly outside the box but United have had one or two marginal penalty calls go their way at OT over the years so I'll accept this one. :-)

+Okechukwu sylvester according to lfchistory.net the average age of Liverpool players in this game was 25, and Utd was 26, so I'm not sure where you've got 28 from...

Everyone looked older in the 70's and 80's, if you were a boy you had long hair and a moustache by age 12.

      @JohnMcMahon. Před 5 lety

It's not so much their faces, it's their appearance and hair styles. Long hair & moustaches made people seem older than they actually were but there was a lot of fresh faces behind the hair styles.. And I don't think the majority of them were as bad with drinking.. It's just a stereotype.
