I saw this film in 1969 at the Drive-In from the back of a 1967 Country Squire. After that, my sibblings always made counting Volkswagen Bugs during any commute a contest. To keep down the numbers, we didn't count any that were parked. It drove our mother nuts!!
0:52: First 90 minutes of run time, and this is the only time Jim Douglas acknowledges the little car's capabilities. Every other race he boasts only of himself.
I grew up with these movies as a kid in the 80s and never really appreciated the humor. Today I watch this and I can’t help but laugh at all the little moments that make these few minutes in this video so funny that I didn’t pick up on before.
Fun fact: they didn’t actually have Volkswagen’s permission for Herbie to be a Volkswagen Beetle at the time they made The Love Bug, so he has no VW badging. They were added on in the later movies when they had VW’s approval.
So now that I’m older, I can better understand it. I think the car reacts based on the heart and soul of the driver. That is why it didn’t react with the lady and instead reacted with the man who raced and did demolition derbies.
I love the timing of Herbie pulling up at the drive-in just as Jim mentions Carole’s dinner date. Herbie’s like “here’s a dinner engagement, with the right guy this time!”
Hamburgers do not go with coffee, to state the obvious. McDs sells both, but you are either in the mood to drink coffee, or eat a hamburger, but not both. Yet with all day breakfast - coffee goes great with eggs.

by the way there is a goof during the restaurant scene when Michel lee is trying to get out of herbie and he won’t let her out note that she is wearing her earrings but when she turns to the vehicle on the left calling for help to get out of herbie her earrings are gone the studio crew wanted to kill her when she told them she wasn’t wearing them in that one scene I also love the fact that the 2 hippies were played by dean jones and buddy hacket I also love the funny line that the first hippie says to her to like this we all prisoners chicky baby we all locked in lol 😂
Michelle Lee looked so pretty back in the 1960's. Too bad I wasn't around during that decade. Though I wish I was. There were so many attractive girls during that time. I am so sorry I wasn't around during the 1960's. Life wasn't so difficult compared to nowadys.
