- When an object called ʻOumuamua' was detected flying through our solar system in 2017, scientists were baffled by its strange behavior. Many said it was just a bizarre space rock, but Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb believes it was most likely a relic of an alien civilization. And he thinks you should believe that too.
In this episode of The Space Show, Motherboard reporter Becky Ferreira speaks with Professor Avi Loeb, chair of Harvard's astronomy department and author of the new book "Extraterrestrial."

To the professor: I applaud you for taking a humble approach. I also think our understanding of the universe, life is limited. We live in a 3 dimensional space and most of us are unable to even theoretically understand higher dimensions. I used to think it was scary but tbh now I'm just happy to know that I have limits to what I can understand... Still I want to know ;)

A few months back, I was about to go sleep so I covered my eyes, I felt a strange feeling of someone watching me so I quickly uncovered my eyes. Then I saw a spark- it was vividly white but blueish and the only thing close that I could describe it as is like a ball-like flash of lightning and it seemed like that presence was fleeting but left a trace of itself. I did feel an eerie presence. It was not raining that day and my windows were shut.
I feel as though I’m being targeted while I sleep of some kind so I’ve started to research aliens and it is starting to make sense for me. I hear different objects in the sky as they don’t sound like normal planes and they hover over my house- usually at night so I do change my sleeping pattern but it seems it’s all very sinister. I have a strange feeling that they’re checking whether I’m sleeping or not.. they have different technologies so who knows what they use. Today, I had a feeling as though they’ve put something in my right ear so that’s why I’m researching right now to see if others like me have these encounters. I’m choosing not to stay silent about it any longer- this has been going on for months for me, possibly even years. I live in the UK.

I want to begin by saying how much I love your guys' channel and everything you guys share and what you stand for.
I don't believe Humanity has had good experiences with "angels" or Extra-terrestrials in the past. Our consciousness isn't ready to understand them yet. Let our reality speak for itself. We just recently formed a space force and went more public with rocketry.
Humanity still doesn't comprehend how time is our illusion.
If the entire universe was designed from a “mathematical” formula known as consciousness, then designing the mathematical code into a human complex system would be known as Artificial Intelligence. However, computers have slowly had to work their way into our everyday lives for this to seem like a normal experience. Remember, this consciousness has been there before humans were even created. This consciousness is what we as humans consider to be our soul.
So, if this theory was accurate, then that would be our life in a nutshell, and we would be shaped by society because we as humans can’t remember our prior existence and don’t understand why we're even here.
What we remember, are the memories from our brain that are connected to this body. Our brain is similar to the hard drive of a computer, but our entire body is our “vehicle” for our spirit. Yeah, maybe other civilisations that have existed on other planets weren't or aren't much cleverer than us, maybe they are just gaseous invertebrates floating around on a thick atmospheric planet absorbing tiny organisms. Although if there are super intelligent organisms that may have existed and they're able to get over to our planet you'd think it likely that at some point in the last 4.5 billion years they'd arrived by now. I love that Professor Loeb is speaking out on the possibilities of extraterrestrial life/technology because this goes against the current standard in our academic communities. And he makes a valid point that we would be foolish to think we're the only intelligent life in the universe. We need more professors like Avi Loeb not afraid to discuss these incredible and interesting phenomena in a different perspective.

I found this quote important in many ways because it tells us even that if we don’t believe something or convince ourselves something isn’t true, anything is possible in the void of space. Even if you are certain that some object in space in just a rock, there is still likely the chance it is extraterrestrial, especially if we don’t provide evidence or investigate. Avi’s counterparts believe that Umuama is a naturalistic hydrogen iceberg. Which I think is not that likely because hydrogen icebergs evaporate because of star light, which this did not at all. Leaving out all possibilities of what the origin of this object could be can cloud our judgment and allow us to never discover new ideas because of our thought process that something like Umuamua came from artificial life or another life source. Thinking of all possibilities can help determine the true origin of certain objects, especially when most of the logical ones have been debunked like Umuamua.
I can't seem to get my head on the idea it's alien made. Accepting the possibility that a huge amount of elements could "fuse" to form "rocks" more exotic than we know of and possibly a strange attractor of sorts. I'm especially impressed by this because he went to Harvard, and I would imagine there's a certain level of social pressure that would normally stop people who went to a school like that from making statements like this.

You have to remember that people in academia are primarily concerned with publication. Publication, especially when your book receives lots of press, inevitably leads to a sizeable merit raise, in addition to whatever profits the author earns from the book itself. I was in academia for twenty years. I know how the "publish or perish" game is played because I played it myself. However, I believe that a desire for celebrity motivates Loeb at least as much as money. The guy is notorious for seeking publicity. His current sensationalist tactics are nothing new.
