  • Wow... just wow! I actually went back and checked out the video a bit more and I missed A LOT! From the birth of dogs who later become the German Sheppards to the astronauts finding the statues of the old representations of history. There's a lot going on in this video. Mein Teil + Engel visual and much, much more. Insane and I love it!

However, the focus is on recent history (the last 100 years). Romans and the Middle Ages briefly indicated. So to speak here comprehensively of German history and to use it as teaching material, somewhat one-sided and incomplete.

    Hi, I'm from Germany.
Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitarrs.
A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the mother of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a Goddess or Joan of Arc.
The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space. The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too.
The battle of the Teutoburg forest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike).
That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history.
The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees.
The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of Emperor Germanicus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees).
In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle.
After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background).
The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion.
The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket.
This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain.
A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp.
The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses.
The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man.
The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialst German state in the east that existed before the German reunification.
Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp).
The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion).
My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams.
Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example.
The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events.
PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany.
PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages.
In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it).
But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war.
The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened.
PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too.
PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII.
PPPPPS: My interpretation of the glass coffin is Little Snow White in space, like I wrote before.
PPPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet.
    Finally:
The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin.
I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because:
    a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless
    b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold
    c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE! 😄
    Recommendation for a reaction:
The band "Lord of the lost" and their song "Ruins"
    Greetings 👋🙂🙂😎🙂🙂👋

This 'movie' is so jam packed full of references, easter eggs, hidden conotations due to the lyrics coming in at specific shots of the video... it is just incredible.
You could easily have a room full of historians start discussing about all the references and when they finally come to an end they realize it's the next day.
The black actress portraiting Germania is Ruby Comey, a Berlin born German actress. They used her throughout the video to show the mythical mother figure of Germany.
With her 'black' skin plus something in her attire always red and gold it represents the current Germany's flag. At some times she is dressed in white and red to represent a different flag and a different epoch.
Everything is so damn subtle that you can easily miss out on these hints, even after watching this movie a dozen times or more. I personally have watched at least twenty reaction videos, and each and every time I find something new I had missed previously.
The red laser is a representation of the ancient myth of Ariadne and the Labyrinth. It is the red thread of Aridane that helped Theseus in the Labyrinth. It represent the guiding thread that is the history of Germany throughout the times.

When I watched the Video the first time and, as a German, understanding the lyrics and all the Symbols displayed, I was shocked. In a good Rammstein way. It takes a very deep look into the German soul, respectively how most Germans feel when we think about our country. I've watched this video many times and every time I discover stuff I haven't notice before. Just the other day I noticed the detail/critism that church tolerated what the Nazis did. You see it at Minute 7.00 when a Nazi is hugging a bishop. Great reaction, as usually. Even thou one day late, not the German punctuality. 😉. I'm kidding. As always, with Love from Germany❤🤘

This was the return of Rammstein, this was the first video of new Rammstein album, the first album after 10 years. Just imagine, knowing nothing about Rammstein new album and then they release the trailer of the video, it was the credit scene of concentration camps, that footage of Rammstein like prisoners was soooo controversial. Just imagine that, and then it came out, the return of Rammstein with this masterpiece. It was amazing, simply amazing. List of things most of you missed:
1:04 The Wolfes (ok, Dogs :) ) in the Background from "Du riechst so gut 98" Video
1:52 The Coffin Scene from the "Haifisch" Video, The Glass Coffing from "Sonne" and the Astronauts from "Amerika"
3:54 the beginning and end of "Rosenrot" where the Monks hike through the Canyon
4:00 the Cover of the "Liebe ist für alle da" LP
    4:02 Mann gegen Mann
6:35 This smells a bit like "Ich will"
6:53 The Pyre from Rosenrot with the Mouthpiece from the Stage Show from "Feuer Frei"
7:06 the Gypsum Heads from the Cover of "Made in Germany"
9:02 The Angel from the stage show, below the Band from the "Mein Teil" Video
    9:22 Another reference to Sonne
    Does anyone get more?
My favorite Shot is the last Picture of the credits: The Black Germania with the Eagle: Noone can piss of any extremist no matter wich wing in a single Picture better, faster and with more force!
A short explanation of "Germania" first: Its a bit like "Uncle Sam" for the US. A personification of a Nation: Name it and anyone knows you mean Germany at once. This Germania is black. And Black People are very, VERY rare in Germany and this one has this exact type of Eagle on her Arm: A "Steinadler" the german Heraldic Animal wich translates to englisch in "Golden Eagle" in front of a reddish background. So we have Black - Red - Gold. Show it a Right Wing and he will get a real Problem with the Skin Color of the Person. Show it a Left Wing and he will Vomit about the dripping Nationalism in this single Picture.
Thats not only "a Picture" this is a big one with layer on layer on layer: Rammstein at its best!

I’m so proud to be a born and bred German (shout out to Bad Hersfeld), but this video took my breath away each and every time I’ve watched it, which has been MULTIPLE times. Rammstein spins the narrative of the current political dialogue from, “we’re sorry for what we think may have happened but we won’t publicly acknowledge it” to “yes, it happened, and we are going to show a message that we fully acknowledge it through music” I love Rammstein!

YOU DID IT! WOOOOH! YOU'RE FINALLY HERE!! :D :D :D
This is the music video that got me hooked on Rammstein, finally checking it out at the end of year 2019 after it had been popping up everywhere on youtube xD
    * Feels just as excited as you did when starting this video *
    * starts commenting as the video progresses *
And you know some German history? That's cool :D It can be handy xD
Lol, Till is dead even before the song begins xD He often end up dead in his vids, I guess he's really sacrificing himself for the band xP
Damn. I've noticed referances to old music videos/live performances such as Du Hast, Feuer Frei, Engel, Sonne - but I've never concidered Amerika!! How is that even possible xD
I agree with you. Rammstein has a lot of grea video, but this is in a league of it's own. Other videos are like various forms of music videos. This is a god damn mini movie!
Also - Flake has a rental service for cars? * sounds vaguely familiar when I think about it... *
And yeah, the whole band is firmly anti-nazis, but some of them (I'm looking at you, Till and Richard) likes to play a bit with the imagery.
Those casts/death masks of the band is a referance to their "Made in Germany" album art - you should google it!
And cows yeah. What - that isn't normal to have around at Canadian hospitals??
Lol. The closest thing I've heard as a possible explanation is that it's supposed to resemble the nativity scene, with "Germania" giving birth to a "new hope" (the dog breed she gives birth to is called Leonberger, which apparently almost got extinct during the world wars, thus signifying a new beginning or the Phoenix rising from the ashes - a new hope for a redeemed Germany). The cows being dressed as nurses is pretty funny though xD
    * Xsezz's expression when Till starts humping something *
The piano version of Sonne in the end is so beautiful...
Also there's a lot of history going on in this video, and I haven't even picked up on all of it! But for what I know is so much that I won't unpack it here xD And I'm sure many others will jump at it in the comment section ;)
Thank you thank you thank you for the awesome reaction!

I really liked the subtitles, but one mistake I noticed is that "Deutschland, Deutschland über allen" is translated wrong, it should actually be translated as "Germany, Germany above everyone". This is an important play on words because "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" ("Germany, Germany above everything") was part of the now censored 1st verse of the "Deutschlandlied" (Song of Germany) while the current German national anthem only uses the 3rd verse. By changing it from "above everything" to "above everyone" Rammstein is alluding to the fact that a lot of people needlessly killed and died for the idea and "ideal" of Germany, here shown as a black Germania (the "goddess" representing the idea of Germany).

  • @Superrobil
    @Superrobil Před 3 lety +8

The video needs to be seen as a kind of critical review of Germany and its history. Finally, the black lady does represent "Germania" - a kind of personalization of Germany through the different violent periods in German history including symbols and metaphors that might be more familiar for native Germans.
In fact, if you are aware of this and know the Chorus ("Germany - my heart in flames,/Will love and condemn you/ Germany - your breath cold/ So young - and yet so old") this video may make more sense.
I guess there is plenty of material explaing available for decrypting the symbols and metaphors. just google for Rammstein Deutschland explained" and you will find.

I know the video touches up on the bad; however, I think they could have touched up on some of the good. There was so much war and battles before Germany became united. The first time was under Fredrick the Great and the second time was when Prussia and Germany United under Fredrick Wilhelm I (for American's this was going on or around about time American Civil War). Then it was lost by Fredrick Wilhelm II. Prussia was a FORCED abdication while the German royal titles were kept. Germany, in my opinion, was at its greatest when it was ruled by the Royal Prussian House of Hohenzollern. Not all of the Hohenzollern's were good, but the majority of the family was killed off by Hitler. The family is large and currently control some countries around Germany. If you study the make up of the Holly Roman Empire, you'll understand the general 'state' layout of Germany as well as the Royal Families ruling other countries around Germany. The exception, being Austria. They fall under the Hohenzollern family, but the Prussian branch had both the Prussian and German royal titles. The Prussian royals were absolute monarchs, while the German royal titles are considered a Constitutional Monarchy (like Great Britain).

The video shows scenes from over 2000 years of German history; from the Germanicus campaigns to Germania magna in 16 AD, to knights, the witch hunt, the November Revolution at the end of the First World War, the hyperinflation in the early years of the Weimar Republic, the Roaring Twenties, the book burnings in 1933, the “Hindenburg “Catastrophe, the Second World War, the Holocaust, the history of the German Democratic Republic, the Red Army faction, right up to the May riots. Ultimately, all periods of time end with violence, which runs like a red thread through the centuries. The members of the band always take on different roles in the different epochs.
The black, accompanied by wolves, Germania cuts off the head of the apparently dead singer of the band, Till Lindemann, who represents a Roman, at the beginning when the Roman Legion arrives. This opening scene alludes to the uprising of the population against the Roman occupiers. Later, Germania reappears in different costumes in all epochs, often surrounded by German shepherds. She is shown repeatedly carrying the dead man's head. Often she seems to accompany the events only passively, but occasionally she also intervenes actively, for example by handing knuckles to two men during the Weimar Republic, when she brings knights back to life after a battle or when she rides an army on horseback leading. Occasionally she is also a victim of events; She lies as food with sauerkraut in front of monks who eat her, is burned on a stake by knights, shot in the face by concentration camp inmates as a general of the SS or is a fearful hostage of the RAF terrorists. In addition, her costumes mix her with historical figures from the respective epoch, for example with Saint Mauritius, to whom the imperial insignia was attributed, or with the dancer Josephine Baker, who lived in Berlin in the 1920s. After kissing the dead Roman's head, she becomes pregnant and later gives birth to several Leonbergers by an obstetrician. In the end, the supposedly dead, but perhaps just sleeping Germania is sent into space in a future scenario in a glass coffin reminiscent of Snow White. During the end credits, a piano version of the Rammstein piece Sonne, recorded by Clemens Pötzsch, plays an equally ambiguous role in the music video Snow White, at the end also came into a coffin and later emerged alive again.

Rammstein came in for a lot of criticism for the video because of the Holocaust scenes, particularly as they were used in the official trailer. In my opinion, if you're looking at the history of a country, then you have to include bad as well as good. It did bring to mind a comment by Flake in the making of the Ich Will video-if you show a gun in a film, that's fine;, if you use one in a music video then it's supposed to be wrong. I don't get it. Ollie's astronaut is Sigmund Jahn, an East German cosmonaut. The red lasers are the Roter Faden or common thread through the video-the same mistakes being made over and over again, linking the present with the past. The leonberger dogs that we see Germania give birth to are meant to represent nationalism (the dogs were sought after by royalty way back when) and perhaps the solemn faces on the band members suggest their dislike of the current birth of nationalism. Not a clue about the cows, I have to be honest. Richard was apparently very uncomfortable about wearing the Nazi officer's uniform. He does always wear red and black in his outfits though-red to represent love and black for depression or sorrow. The casket floating through space at the end suggests going into the unknown which is what the future is. An absolutely magnificent video that needs to be watched even down to the credits at the end. I knew a small amount about German history and recognised Till as Ulrike Meinhoff but you learn so much more from it. Massive thanks to the band and to Spector Berlin for taking the risk and making this wonderful, stunning video and saying to hell with the critics. No country is free from shame, we all have events in the past that we wish hadn't happened, but the lessons have to be to learn from them at some point. Amazing.

Copied from someone else's comment on another reaction, very informative:
A little bit of context here... The lady that follows us all along the video represents "Germania". You'll notice, if you watch closely, that (almost) each time she appears, the color scheme of the video at this moment is Yellow (gold), red and black (Colors of the German flag). The African origin of the lady is also interesting here knowing the controversy around Rammstein which is often WRONGLY labelled as racist (You know... White, German, Metal...)
Most people think the beginning (Roman Empire) is related to the Teutoburg forest battle which is the founding "Act" for Germania, but the date more refers to the campaign of Germanicus. Anyway... Both happened in a quite close timeframe and most probably refer to the foundation of the country.
The scene with the fight between the two guys is most probably representative of the Weimar period (Between both wars), probably the beginning of it, which was an extremely violent period with strong disparities between rich and poor. You must understand here that when we speak about violence in this time it was not just a word... Artillery, mass executions and bombings were used against the population to restore order in the country... It was much closer to a civil war than anything else.
You have then the scene of the Hindenburg disaster in 1937 where an Airship from the already Nazi Germany crashed during its landing in the US. The exact cause of the crash was never really discovered but the interesting part here is that the ship was filled with hydrogen (Highly flammable) and not helium because of the restriction the US put on selling Helium to Germany. The Airships in this period were the only real commercial concurrent to transatlantic ships and Germany was the only country really being able to build them.
After this scene we land in a sort of political office and you can see a communist logo in the background which you also see on the flags on the side. This represents the period where Germany was split in two countries (BRD : Bundesrepublik Deutschland and DDR : deutsche Demokratische Republik (The later one being the socialist dictatorship)). Till (The singer) represents here Erich Honecker who was the leader of the socialist party and leader of the country until its fall in the late 80s. The exuberance and party ambiance you see in this scene represents the contrast between the sacrifices of the population which missed products like toilet paper for example and the opulence of highly ranked party members. Don't forget here that all members of this band grew up in east Germany (DDR). For them it's not just a line in history books.
I have a bit more problem to place a date on the scene with the monks feasting on Germania but it could represent a period of the 18th century where the Church was almighty in the country and monopolized the resources and the lives of people in the country. The almost affectionate gesture of Germania toward the monks while they eat "Sauerkraut" out of her seems to represent this love/hate relation.
Then you have a scenery in a prison with money raining from the ceiling. Here again it's representative of the Weimar period, probably a bit later than the first reference to it, during the hyperinflation crisis of 1923 which was caused by the incredibly high reparations that were required by the winner of WW1. During this crisis a loaf of bread could reach prices of hundreds of billions of Reichsmark. It was more productive, at this time, to burn the money for heating than to use it to buy coal. Germany was at the verge of the collapse which finally brought the NS party (Nazi party) to the power.
The next scene in the concentration camp is also very interesting on a historical viewpoint. First.. The inmate being hanged have all different "logos" on their shirts. It's not only, as you could expect, the yellow David star but you also see a red triangle (For homosexuals and the red/yellow star which was reserved for Jews involved in political activities). You also see the V2 Rockets in the Background which were, for there time, an impressive piece of engineering and was used as terror weapon against the allies to bomb the UK. As a little side note here. It's not a so well-known fact that it's Nazi Germany that sent the first object in space in the form of a V2 Rocket. It travelled into space by crossing the Kármán line. Most of the Nazi scientist that participated in the elaboration of the V2 were exfiltrated to the US during "Operation Paperclip" and were provided with a new life there in exchange of their knowledge. These people were the base of the actual Nasa and helped the US space Program to make a giant leap forward. First Nasa director was a former SS member. You'll also notice the eyepatch on the figure of Germania with refers on the saying "Blind auf die rechte Seite". This is a symbolic representation of the nation being blind of what's happening on its extreme right side. Most German people ignored or faked to ignore the atrocities happening in the Nazi concentration and extermination camps. An additional interesting side note here... None of these camps was on German territory. Most of them were built in Poland.
The scene after the concentration camp represents the 70s and the period of the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion). It was a left-wing terrorist group that marked this period with multiple attacks and abductions including Hans Martin Schleyer (A bit like kidnapping Bill Gates).
After that you have again a short scene of the Nazi Regime burning books. This refers to the Nazis burnings "unwanted" books in 1933. The scene by itself is quite interesting as it isn't only historical but also symbolic as you see a witch burn representing the hunt on witches (Enemies of the country) which had already started in this period as well as the presence of representative of the church hugging a Nazi officer. This refers to Pope Pius XII and his very controversial approach to the Nazi regime and the holocaust. Modern history has tried to silence as much as possible this collusion but many documents from this period show this ambiguous relation.
The scene of the birth of the puppy is funny for me as I had one of these... It's a Leonberger. This was an almost extinct race that was reborn and probably represents the rebirth of Germany after the troubled period of WW2. This is also supported by some lyrics that reappear at multiple places like "So old and so young" which show the duality between its very ancient history and its new form which only exists since 1989 and the fall of East Germany (DDR).
Another interesting (even if very short) scene is the one with "Police" surrounding a tank in front of a giant Karl Marx head. This head BTW existed in the city of Chemnitz (Karl Marx City) and the tank as well as the police could represent the violent repression by soviet military that took place during the uprisings of 1953.
Now about the general context of this video. The lyrics neither praise nor criticize "Germany as a country". They show the very ambiguous and difficult relation that German people have toward their history which is at the same time very ancient, very violent (at some times of its history), has contained the infamous period of Nazi regime, its partition between east and west blocks and finally it's modern period. You can see this with lyrics like "Germany My heart in flames Want to love you want to damn you" or "I never want to leave you, one want to love you and want to hate you"
I think I missed dozens of other references... What I know is that this video is extremely impressive for people knowing a bit the history of the country.

From another Reaction of a Guitar Player:
czcams.com/video/LUDT6ZgasoE/video.html (in German only, sadly. He is analysing the Music of the Song down to the Bone.)
In Music there are Major and Minor patterns. Major is used by i think any of the Dance Hall burners. It sounds happy, free, open.
Minor is most used for more Sad Songs, funeral Songs ...this sort of Music
The tonality of Deutschland is D minor.
There are in theory 14 sorts of tonalitys and they are using precisely D minor?
    Rammstein, the Sound tinkerer?
    D minor? RLY?
Yep, it could be a lucky coincidence. I think ist in a Level a coincidence like the Sun dawns tomorrow morning by accident.

Cows? Germany is one of the top producer of meat - and one of the countrys where is meat extremly cheap; in comparsion to the money. For example: in germany you average work less than a hour for a kilogramm pig or cow meat, in countrys like chile or columbia you have to work for the same amount of meat 6 to 10 hours.

And as a German it should go faster with me.
But alone the scene in the concentration camp (KZ), where the Nazi (Richard) pushes the stone away from under the Jew (Paul) is not as simple as it looks.
Because there were 4 people on the gallows. Only one was a Jew. All the others wore other signs. Were therefore not because of Jewish faith in the concentration camp.
And there is so much more to see in this video
