One extra thing you could add to the trailer. Take some of the scrap pieces of the angle iron and weld to the sides of the trailer so you have a place to attach ratchet straps. Very helpful. Did it to mine.

Wise choice cutting the size way down... I had a converted pop-up to utility trailer that was still full size (6'x14'). The previous owner sold it because everyone always overloaded it. I sold it after my Dad did the same thing and bent the axle.
You can tell people that something only has a 2,000lb rating and it just bounces right off of their skulls. You have to build it so it will only hold its rating in iron or rock or your stuff gets torn up.

I know that most guys connect the white ground wire to the trailer frame.. for a "ground"..... but I have better success running the ground wire all the way the whole length of the trailer AND to the towing vehicle via the electrical cable. We've all seen the effects of "a bad ground".... and another ten feet of wire for each rear light, IMO, is well worth the greater electrical reliability.

@@christophergreen2328 You obviously don't know anything about aerodynamics. A smooth floor parallel to the relative wind would produce very little aerodynamic drag, just like they are smoothing out the bottoms of cars to reduce drag. A wire mesh floor would present a tremendous amount of drag.

  • @zerocool212121
    @zerocool212121 Před 5 lety +5

Nice build, id highly suggest doing a few extra tweeks to the next build though. First the one end of the trailer floor should be left open so if you need to replace any piece of wood you can do that without cutting and re welding. Second would be to add some conduit or a channel to run the wires through keeps them from getting snagged on road debris and looks much cleaner. We used an old weight lifting bar that someone threw out for our gate hinge as that thing wont break. Also using some cut links of chain welding to the frame or rails make great anchors to tie down with. Nice detail with the video :)

I recommend the 8 bolt axle or shorten one of those mobile home axles. I modified a bought trailer of similar design, so that the ramp becomes
an extension of the trailer, so I can now haul 12ft lumber, ect...it
used to fold in, but hinges were above the deck plane, & like You
said, the deck of My mower would hook the hinge, unless the ground was
higher where the ramp landed, so I cut them off & lowered them flush
with the deck, but will no longer fold inside, Your T-design hinge
would have worked nicely to retain that feature,,,,,but think I can live
without it too, or just lay it back for any long trips if I was really concerned about gas guzzling, & it doesn't obstruct
the taillights, plus also added appropriate reflectors to the back &
sides of ramp to hopefully satisfy the DMV....
    Peace Out.....& Beyond

Wheel location with respect to the bed is a key design element. I notice that this trailer had trailer jacks in the back which he cut out when he removed the sides. These jacks were needed since the wheels look like they are roughly in the middle of the bed, likely to reduce tongue loading. However, this location makes the trailer more prone to tipping if not hooked up to a vehicle and someone goes to load something on it. This is due to the weight between the axle and the hitch and the weight between the axle and the back being nearly equal. So, any added weight could tip the trailer. A key part of trailer design, to me, is this balance between acceptable tongue weight and stability. It's a calculation thing where you look at the normal trailer loading, tongue load, allowable axle load and the torques involved.
And, yes, I've designed trailers which have performed great. My nephew is an AWS certified welder who fabricated them.
I do like the ramp/gate design - good job!

Great video and love all your videos, I am just about to start a big project. I am moving from Arizona to Arkansas where my wife and I will be building a house, shop, barn, and other buildings from scratch on our 10+ acres. I could really use a new welder, I am ashamed to say I have a old “blue” welder that is falling apart and hardly works, plus mine doesn’t do aluminum or Tig which I really want to learn. Keep up the good work and thanks for all the great videos. John

Just a comment about video length. Several times in this video you mentioned that you were worried the video was getting too long. Stop worrying about it. If I'm going to watch a video about building a trailer, whether it's 30 minutes or 90 minutes I'll still watch it. So just do your thing and not worry about time. And thanks.

Holy guacamole! That truck story is exactly mine! Except she left be for sancho and I had to buy a trailer to move in with my buddy... we might be cousins separated at birth like all those guys in Missouri that have the same mom that’s also they’re aunt! Anywho there is some useful information here as per the regular for your videos. Doesn’t seem all that cheap in the end when you account for almost free steel, rod, oxy, acetalyn, lights, paint, decking, stain screws/bolts, tongue jack, hitch coupler, axle, bearings, wheels and tires, labor, and the pain in the ass it is to title and register a home built trailer. But I guess you did score a free dental pick! So that’s handy

Smart man! I see you use the air supply respirator. There are so many videos with guys welding with no respirator and it short sleeve shirts. I think that's so irresponsible . We adults have to take in consideration that there are kids looking at these videos and we have to stress that if you're going to weld, you must use all proper safety equipment. That's the number one thing I learned in Weld School many moons ago.

Nice build out I do a fair amount of camping in private campgrounds in the US and ive noticed a lot of old pop ups in their long term storage that look like they are abandoned by the owners usually the tags are expired and they are pushed into the back of the lots i like vintage campers so i almost always look in the storage lots generally in the back of a campground property i specifically look for older Airstreams
