  • Kong Skull Island has been released but is it as good as Peter Jackson's King Kong, which is arguably the best interpretation of the character?

Jackson's version is a masterpiece. The score, the set pieces, the costumes and makeup, the massive scope, the diverse creatures and locations of the island, the motion capture, the acting. They dont make movies like this anymore, this was hollywood firing on all cylinders. 10/10

For me, the most terrifying part of the 2005 King Kong movie was the natives. The film does a great job at showing that they could be just as dangerous as the monsters on Skull Island. That scene where they quietly throw a spear through one of the crewmen’s chests right in front of Naomi Watts’ character was haunting.

am I the only one that understands that King Kong (2005) was a remake of the original and that Kong: Skull Island is actually a reboot. They have totally different stories. Skull Island took out the beauty and the beast angle, the tribe wasn't making sacrifices to Kong in the form of brides. Not really fair to compare the two movies. King Kong is a complete story, Skull Island is only part of a story. Both are good , but, the 1933 version is the best of all however, always will be.

King Kong 2005, while it has it flaws, feels like a complete and utter love letter to the original. Peter Jackson(the original is his favorite movie ever)really poured his heart and soul into every aspect. The New York setting, Skull island, its natives and creatures all feel amazing and totally realized. When you finally get to the island it truly feels like it could be a lost world. There was such a good buildup and the characters weren't just stand ins. King Kong feels like a perfect adventure movie, its emotional, its pays homage to the original and I think the creators would honestly be proud. It feels like a true epic just like when I saw fellowship of the ring. It has its flaws but I think it's a masterpiece.
Kong skull island is a genre film. I "liked" the film but it was so utterly forgettable. Honestly the characters remind me of suicide squad. A bunch of characters get thrown into a story but I didn't care about any of them(except John C Reilly). They are completely one dimensional. I really liked the 70's setting and the look of Kong is cool. The cinematography is cool and there are some amazing shots. But I never felt like Skull island was a real place at all that was compelling. The natives were boring, the main "threat" didn't seem like much of a threat at all. I didn't ever get the sense that Kong was a god or that I should be rooting for him. The movie honestly feels like it exists solely for his introduction into the Godzilla universe. Which is okay, but I need MORE than that in my film. I need compelling characters. I need to be emotionally invested in Kong to care about him down the line. That didn't happen here at all. I don't hate the film or anything but that's my opinion. I'm going to now watch the video and see if I agree lol. We might have a completely different perspective.

Most of them gave me a chuckle, but the sword fighting scene pushed it too far for my tastes. King Kong is actually a love story cleverly wrapped in an action flick so men don't notice. i agree 157% with you that Peter Jackson's King Kong (2005) is far better than Kong Skull Island (2017) and you gave alot of reasons why its better because of its action scenes, story, Kong himself, the conclusion and the musical score from my point of view, i just recently watched the 2017 film and i felt like, wow that has to be by far the WORST monster film i have ever seen in my entire life, and by the way who would look that clean after spending god knows how many days they where on that island, i honestly feel from my perspective that whoever wrote and directed this film and from my point of view i feel like they tried to make this 2017 film better than the 2005 version and just for laughs it clearly failed with a capital F, myself as a person i've never been a fan of re-boots or remakes or whatever you can call them, but despite the 2005 version being a remake it really is an amazing and fascinating movie in its own right, the only re-boots i really love love would be Rise of the planet of the apes (2011) Dawn of the planet of the apes (2014) War for the planet of the apes (2017) and Karate Kid (2010) but not as much as the 1984 film.

I agree with everything you say aside from the soundtrack, because the two are not comparable: King Kong's s OST is a full orchestra-played instrumental 3h-long score mostly aiming to set the mood for the scenes; Skull Island's is also thought to blend in with and help set the movie' "historical" setting - that's why it contains a couple of rock songs from the '70s. They're two very different types of soundtrack, because the starting idea was different, so imo they can't really be compared.
Also, don't mean to offend....but don't you think your opinions might not be entirely objective because of the strong impact Peter Jackson's King Kong had on your child's mind?

I agree that the Jackson's characters are much better but your point about the 2017 movie being on human side is absolutely ridiculous and nonsensical. 1.Characters are not bombing an uncharted island just for fun. They clearly state that those are scientific devices.
2.Kong:Skull Island evidently does not endorse american interventionism. The movie punishes it. In some ways it plays out like the Avatar. But Skull Island does it even better because unlike Avatar where humans are villains that we should not empathize with Skull Island doesn't villainize any of the sides. It shows both sides' perspectives. The whole theme of the movie is "We don't belong here". The trailer song is called " We've gotta get out of this place". Even one of the main characters says :" You don't go into someone's house and start dropping bombs unless you are picking a fight."

Zainad Hamad, I agree! IMO Peter Jackson´s King Kong is an underrated masterpiece! I really cared for the human characters, and Andy Serkis and the CGI wizards managed to give Kong a soul. He is actually not the main antagonist. The bad guys are the humans who abduct Kong in order to make money with the big guy! They are to blame for the disaster in New York!
As to 2017 Kong - Skull Island: I liked it. It tells an interesting story and it is a very entertaining pop corn movie. But I was very annoyed that quite a few reviewers (mostly American reviewers) claimed that Kong - Skull Island is better than Peter Jackson´s Kong. That is absurd. Even the special effects are not better than Peter Jackson´s Kong, although it is 12 years older! Peter Jackson´s Kong aged very well. His Kong still looks absolutely stunning! There are only very few things which could have been better: some of the fight scenes should have been a bit shorter. And I dislike Peter Jackson´s natives. They seem to be more like zombies than real indigenous people who try to make a living although the resources are scarce. I dont´ know why Jackson choose to show them in such an unflattering way. Even the natives in the 1933 version are shown as strange but brave. They really try to fight and to contain Kong´s rage, although they are the ones who have to pay heavily for their bravery. If I could change one thing from Peter Jackson´s Kong, it would be the natives!

One of my favourite parts about Kong: Skull Island is Kong himself! He's gigantic, and I kinda actually sympathised with him in that one scene, and his battles with Skull Crawlers were awesome! And I did kinda like that he wasn't killed at the end, he was pretty cool, and the scene where he helps the sker buffalo was very intimidating to me, and when he destroyed the helicopters, it did kinda remind me of The Hulk, as he just destroys them by punching them, similar to the Hulk, so, even though I prefer 2017's Kong, I still agree that Peter Jackson's King Kong is great, I like them both

  • @charlessugg6102
    @charlessugg6102 Před 7 lety +18

Good video, I would agree that as a film overall Peter Jackson's King Kong is the better of the two. Better human characters, better story. However I think it's not really fair to compare the two movies, because outside of the fact that both movies have Kong, the natives, and that Kong is the last of his kind, these movies are different from one another. One difference is that Skull island is pretty much the main setting in Skull island, where as in Peter Jackson King Kong, you have two main settings New York and Skull island. Another difference is the time setting One is set out during the 1930s, while the other is set out during the Vietnam War. In other words, one movie is a true remake (Peter Jackson King Kong), while the other one is true reboot. But like I said earlier, I do agree that Peter Jackson King Kong is the better film overall, but I will say that I liked the Kong from Skull Island the best because he's is AWESOME.

So pracitically King Kong is a masterpiece with tons of style, personality and emotion where Skull Island is monster movie created for the upcoming crossover...

    My counter points.
While I respect you thinking that the Americans dropping bombs in skull island was meant to be portrayed as morally right, and the movies suffers as a result. You're wrong, it's stated that what Packard and the other soldiers did was wrong, Kong's actions in killing the men was completely justified.
Also, what's the point in comparing these movies? King Kong 2005 is trying to be a faithful retelling of the original, while Skull Island is more just for fun.

In my honest opinion, I don't like "Kong: Skull Island" on the exact same level as Peter Jackson's film, but I do enjoy it as it's own thing (starring Kong, of course).
