  • Hi, today we take a look on the MiG-3. A plane very deadly in the right hands and very deadly to it's own pilot if not.
    I hope I can shed some light in how to flight this nice plane.

      seems to me the yak and the 109 are the better planes though.

    • @vvkth2500
      @vvkth2500 Před 6 lety +5

      Well, Yak was built later, and was an improvement across the board compared to any plane USSR used at the time. It's one of the best fighters in WW2 (some would say top 3).
      MiG-3 was a beautiful plane, with some great design solutions, but his designed role was flawed - MiG was built to intercept bombers at very high altitudes. MiG's engine was optimized for high altitudes, and it didn't perform as well on more common altitudes.

    I was frustrated trying to learn how to fly the Mig all on my own. The most important takeaway from this video is that you have to employ tactics to win in the Mig, because brute forcing a dogfight with tight turns (as you can with higher class Yaks) will always result in your death.
    Thank you for the instruction!

    Just started my career in Battle of Moscow and have been exclusively flying a Mig 3 for a few weeks now. This guide is perfect, it's clear you've spent some real time in this plane. Once you get the swing of it, the fear of getting into a scrap with some 109s becomes exciting! I just wish I had some better guns, if I am ambushed on a bombing run all I can do is run. With just the basic guns I can empty an entire payload into a single 109 and it will still be able to limp home!

  • @old_guard2431
    @old_guard2431 Před 5 lety +2

    Very helpful. Watching this a second time - I have been putting notes and check-offs on 4x6 index cards for convenience. A couple of points:
    1. It looks like the Mig 3 was designed as a high-altitude interceptor, much like the early-war American planes, and got overtaken by events on the Eastern Front. But at least you don't have the problem of over-boosting at lower altitudes like the American planes with single-speed superchargers.
    2. I wish we could set configurations for individual airplanes. I have set a fairly broad curve into my rudder to help with over-controlling generally, but it would be nice to set individual curves for individual planes.

  • @madlarkin8
    @madlarkin8 Před 6 lety +3

    honestly though, it makes the perfect escort for some high altitude level bombers because it performs so well at high altitude. most bomber pilots don't bother to get above 3k because it takes so long, but it makes you quite hard to intercept, and if you bring little friends up there forget about it. the 109s are done for.

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  Před 6 lety +2

      The 109s still climb better, turn better and outaccelerate the MIG. Its not like autowin :D Everything newer than a F-2 is also faster

    Great instructional video, thx! I think that the main reason the Mig-3 was phased out early is that it shared the same engine as the Il-2, and the latter was seen as much more essential than the Mig to the war effort.

    • @Derpy-qg9hn
      @Derpy-qg9hn Před 3 lety +1

      The MiG's engine wasn't exactly the same, but similar enough to terminate the AM-35 production lines and switch them to the Sturmovik's AM-38s. Incidentally a good few MiG-3s were given Sturmovik engines in the field :)

    I would defiantly try out the 2x 12.7mm Berezin UB gun pods, paired with the 2x 12.7 Berezin UB's mounted to the top of the engine cowl. Even though the gun pods only have 145rpg, I would try and locate and destroy them first, maximizing the benefits while minimizing the performance sacrifice. It will still be fast enough, especially in shallow dives, to sweep lower altitude planes, breaking off and either continuing dive, or begin to climb but initiating a vertical look before air speed begin to get close to stall speed.

    Like several others below, revisiting this. An excellent guide. I wish you could set control profiles for individual planes in IL-2 BoX. It seems to make sense to add more of a curve for rudder for the Mig, but then you might have to re-set it to fly something else.

    First time playing this game and I love it so much. Prolly because I just found this tutorial series and I've started to learn how to fly actually hahaha . Now my big question about all the fuel mix setup and opening/closing radiators and everything, is this something about the server rules not to use the auto for these setups ? Because I play on normal realism and my plane does these things automatically. PS: never joined in multiplayer servers, I keep practice with bots :P in quick missions so .. I have no clue.

    I don't think you mean, mixture, which is either rich or lean. I think you're referring to manifold pressure which is controlled by the prop and the turbo/supercharger.

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  Před 5 lety

      dunno what you mean

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  Před 5 lety

      maybe you are confused by the term "boost". The Mig3 has a feature qhich allows for exceptionally high manifold pressures. And that is indeed activated via the mixture lever.

  • @Jbroker404
    @Jbroker404 Před 4 lety

    What about prop RPM? Would you suggest to always leave it at 100% (except for maybe cruising?), or always keep it about the same as the throttle?

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  Před 4 lety +1

      You can keep it at 100%. With more knowledge you can exploit RPM a bit better. You can lower it for cruising, that saves some fuel, but not a lot. Most fuel is saved with Throttle and mixture. A lower RPM lets you dive quicker and improves energy retention after dives.

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  Před 7 lety

      +Jacob Rabon no. Leaner mixture only provides more power if there is not enough air to burn the entire amount of fuel. And additionally on the mig it controls the boost. So you get more manifold pressure with a higher mixture setting. And furthermore he percentage refers to a lever know the cockpit and not to an absolute value.
