    The F series was the last pure fighter. The G series were up armed and armoured for destroying bombers. Or so said Adolph Galland or someone like him.

      That seems to be true. I prefer the G as represented in Stalingrad. I prefer the engine settings and the artificial horizon.

    I almost NEVER comment on CZcams, but you deserve this. I saw this video 6 or 7 years ago. I still come back and watch it on a regular basis. It’s one of the best videos I’ve ever found. You are so generous in the sharing of your knowledge, in this video as well as your others, and I appreciate you for that very much. You are partly responsible for my passion for WWII aircraft. Not all hero’s wear capes. But maybe you do wear a cape. I don’t know. Either way, you’re my hero. I want to fly just like you when I grow up.

    If you are moving from CloD to BoS/BoK like I am, some additional notes:
    1. Take the F-4. It's pretty much an E-4 with more power and "done right" (Fly it and you'll know what I mean by that). Skip the G-Series in the beginning and ignore the 190's.
    2. Pay SPECIAL attention to the notes, Sheriff gave about the tail wheel lock and careful throttle usage while on the ground. They are spot-on. Likewise, configure the stabilizer, you'll need it.
    3. Don't worry about the seemingly "lesser" armament. The fact, that your single cannon is aligned with the center fuselage not only lets you ignore any convergence-setting games you did in CloD, but you'll also get more shots on target in average, which makes up for the loss of the cannon. Don't even consider the extra cannons under the wings.
    4. try to enter the fight on continuous power. combat/emergency is not needed for manouvering and you should grow a habit of using it only, when you really need it.
    Just my $0.02

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  Před 5 lety +4

      In this comment there are some things I disagree on.
      1. F-4 like the E-4 with more power? ok steep since the F-4 does not turn as well by far.
      4.) why tho? why do you want to fly on continous power into a fight? E-Power not needed for maneuvering?
      Why does it even have those engine capabilites then if they aren't needed in a fight?

    • @virtualinfinity6280
      @virtualinfinity6280 Před 5 lety +10

      I wrote "If you are moving from CloD to BoS/BoK like I am, some additional notes:". So take my comments in this context.
      1. Sure, the F-4 does not turn like the E-4, but in the context of the games, this hardly matters. In CloD, the E-4 is not really capable of turing with the opponents (mainly Spits Mk1&2), so you generally tend not to fly it as a turnfighter.
      2. In CloD, people tend to fly the E-4 at 100% throttle most of the time, and only hit WEP when needed (mapped to an extra button/key for that matter). In BoS, flying the F-4 at 100% means combat/emergency on all the time. Which is, what you get, when you map the throttle to a throttle quadrant. To put it in simple terms, my suggestion is "Do not fly at 100% throttle all the time, as you may have used to do in CloD".
      As for the general flight-characteristice, you are right. My comment was more geared towards the pilot switching from CloD to BoS/BoK. Which, by the way, also explains my "Skip the G-Series in the beginning and ignore the 190's." comment. You should of course not skip those planes permanently, as they can be rewarding to fly, especially the 190.
      I hope, that clarifys my comment.

    Love your videos man,you explain things real well, Ive been playing this game since it came out basically in the early 2000s, i wouldn't consider myself a crack ace or anything closer to that but i enjoy the game immensely, i actually sometimes just enjoy flying by myself,no combat at all and i love landing because there are so many things involved that you have to get just right.
    A few minutes ago a buddy stopped by with his son who only plays shooting games like Call of Duty and things of that nature which i also enjoy once in a while and i set him up with my Trackir and he was crashing every few seconds and yanking on the stick really hard, stalling and going into spins and it reminded me of my early days, lol, who knows maybe he will talk to his dad and ask him to buy him the game,we might have a future ace in our midst's or he might just say "screw that game, thats too hard" only time will tell.
    Something i haven't done much on this new incarnation of the sim is bombing which i wanna get into with the Heinkel 111 or the Ju88, i did it quite a bit on the old Sturmovik but our new bomb sights are a little different,anyhow thanks for the videos, i subscribed the other day.

    in a turn fight with F-4, utilize high yo-yo as much as possible, to use your powerful engine and low weight to kw ratio to both gain you potential energy and to keep your turn angle as tight as possible. this alone will help you to win the energy advantage for your opponent, since you will keep gaining more energy than him. it will also give you game ending angles over the target you are chasing even before winning the energy race.
    This will be even amplified due to the fact that the russians will most often fly with their flaps open, consuming a ton of more energy than u already.

    The engine torque does not "get less" as you take off. Whats happening is as your airspeed increases the sideways force provided by the rudder increases . Thus you don't need as much rudder applied at high air speeds as you do at low. That's the reason you decrease rudder the faster you go on takeoff.

    Great instructional video. I couldn't help but laugh at your "landing fuck ups" commentary as it came completely out of left field from such a concise, proper way of speaking. So far I have taxiing and take offs down, but I'm bleeding off too much speed circling the landing strip and I stall out. Bombing, strafing and dogfighting are a long ways off for me as I'm still concentrating on not crashing.

    Would be interested in your views on "Convergence" settings.
    I recently became aware that it matters even with cowl- and engine-mounted guns. It will (or should) also set the gun sight to compensate for the drop of the rounds over distance, and that is important no matter where the guns are mounted.
    It would seem that using 200 meters as a standard shooting range (and setting the convergence for that distance) would minimize the difference in impact points between the MGs and the cannon. With cowling-mounted guns you do not have the shotgun pattern of wing-mounted guns, so adjusting for differences in target distance (i.e. 200 meters may be a bit close for a ground target or a bomber) would be a matter of "Kentucky windage" up or down on the sight.

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  Před 6 lety +2

      I use 400m convergence. To be able to pull off more difficult deflection shots. Since you can lead targets in turns a little easier.

    I LOVE the way the f4 flies, but, possibly because a) I can't shoot worth shit, and b) Japanese martial arts training emphasises the "one decisive cut", I'm more attracted to the 4x 20mm of the fw190.

I haven't been flying since the original IL2 version, but always found the F-4 the most formidable and easiest to fly. I loved it. I did purchase newer versions of the game but found many things changed for the worse, so basically lost interest. Now after viewing Battle of Stalingrad I'm intrigued. So long story short lol, what equipment do I need, computer wise, to get the same results as you show. Thanks and again enjoyed your video.

      ts3.virtualpilots.fi:8000/en/sortie/122607/?tour=19
      The other one is not yet in apparently. And then you owe me an apology.

      I shot three other aicraft down. and after beeing damaged by a Ju-88 I landed. How that is perceived as a combat log escapes me.
      And makes me really angry.

    Hey Sheriff, the´re are really great videos you offer. I learn a lot from you. Is it possible, taht you make a How To about the Bf109 -f2?

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  Před 5 lety

      At least not so soon. Especially since the relavance of the F-2 will further decrease. overall my tips would be the same tho.

    *Mistake: the F-4 had curve top in the armour back sit to save the pilot in case of fire behind the plane, here appears as a usual strait and sort back armour plate pilot sit. Well it's just a comentary to the ones who worked in this wonderful Bf109F-4 in the Game. A Madrileño who really loves Luftwaffe aircrafts. ;) All the best with the " corona.." wish you Luck!!!

      Except its not. The hurricane is left in the dust even by the 109 e-7

    Excellent video, Sheriff! Very helpful for someone that just picked up the game in the last sale :-) And luckily a lot of things are automated in the 109.
    I have one general question though: How do you know in which direction to take off and land at an airfield? Is there some sort of rule or do you just take off the way you seem fit as long as there is noone else on the runway?

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  Před 7 lety +3

      Every airstrip has two taxiways to them, both lead to park positions. However only on one new aircrafts spawn in and they use hopefully the quickest way to the airstrip. So you can identify in your landing pattern which side is the "busy" one by just observing taxing planes.
      If *you* spawn in and you search for the direction you have to go to get to the runway, zoom fully in on your airfield. You can see your spawn location.(marker of the airfield) That way you identifly in which direction you have to taxi. Quickest way to the runway is yours. Generally speaking if you need more than 2-3 Minutes to the runway you taxied the wrong way.
      Sometimes the starting and landing position on TAW is market by a fire. Like here:
      cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/301637712962781184/303594952837955586/unknown.png
      U see a moving plane on the parking spot you see a plane on the beginning of the runway and you see that fire, which shows you if you have any crosswind btw.

    Can the "shallow climb" described here be effectively used also in the G2? I mean at medium altitudes (2-5K)? I fear the yaks will catch me at this altitudes...Thanks for these excellent videos!

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  Před 7 lety +1

      Jordi Graner sure this works for the g2 as well. But u climb a little worse. Keep your speed roughly at 400kph and u will be fine
