    I remember the sirens well. I was 8 years old living in Riyadh during this time. The intercepts would send shockwaves that shook everything violently - had to Duck Tape windows as they were prone to shattering. Interesting memories - thanks for sharing.

      Same here.. I remember being woken up out of bed with the sirens (for the first few days) and having to run into my parents room to put on my gas mask whilst my father duct taped the door we just walked through.. try to prevent ingress of any gas. They stopped the sirens in our compound because the local people living outside our compounds didnt have gas masks and it terrified them...
      I still have the gas mask.. bloody scary stuff.. can't believe my parents didn't have us evacuated sooner...

    i was in Dharan with the Army while this was going on. Those were literally being intercepted over top of us, the Patriot missile batteries were about 1/2 behind us. So close when they launched and went overhead, we could feel and hear them. Some nights no alarms warned us before the first launch. I still think of it to this day.

    • @Pillbowen
      @Pillbowen  Před 7 lety +27

      Thank-you for the reply. I too was in the Dhahran area with the Army and downrange from the local Patriot battery - I was with the 11th Signal Brigade (this tape was given to me by members of our unit who had been working in Riyadh). There were a great many SCUD attacks in the port area too. Like yourself I have many notable and lasting memories of these events: the civil defense sirens, the clang of the chemical attack bell our unit set up and rang during some of the early SCUD attacks (we actually had a fair number of chemical alarms go off at various times, but were never confirmed by secondary tests), the momentary panic and fear I witnessed in otherwise strong brave soldiers, local police slowly rolling through civilian neighborhoods making announcements/issuing warnings over an intercom in the middle of the night (all while the civil defense sirens wale - I often wondered how frightened the civilians must have been while all this was happening). The hardest memory was being jarred awake, I had overslept the start of my night shift, by the SCUD that impacted within 5km of our unit and killed 27 soldiers in the 475th Quartermaster Group - the typical Patriot/Scud flyby or intercept resulted in a boom that would shake a building from the top - this impact rocked the building from ground. Fwiw, I do not know of anyone making recordings of the SCUD attacks in the Dhahran area.

      I too was with the 67th Sig Bn. The night the 475th QM got hit I was on guard duty in a tower above the motor pool. The whole thing scared the shit out of me; from the patriot launch to the intercept to the warhead impact. It lit up up real red and the shock wave was massive. After seeing that I just slept through the sirens and avoided the bunkers, if we got hit my mask wasn't going to help much.

    • @Pillbowen

      Was that the tower in the back corner - built onto the building? The one where you had to walk across the floor boards that felt like they were about to break through at any moment to reach the position? Or was it the stand alone tower?

But it does not actually capture much of the action. 17 patriot missiles were launched in defense of the airspace over kkia. You should see the classified videos documenting this. I wouldnt be commenting today if they didnt do their job. Patriot missiles were developed in the 1960's and this was their first war they were used in. The missile technology has advanced greatly now and patriot missile batteries continue to be sold and used in many countries in the world.
