Some people think a man with absolutely nothing left to lose is the deadliest kind of man to face, but one even worse is a man who has one last thing to defend
My friends told me a quote that I really like. "There are three man you don't wanna mess with. The one that has everything to lose, the one that has one thing to defend and a man who doesn't have anything to lose. The first being the most chill, but that is coming from the most dangerous man in the world. And by God, don't make any of the first two into the last."
Anyone else notice how this song progressively gets quieter, and towards the end uses less instruments? As if it’s dying with Arthur? Probably overthinking but damn
Perfect for a battle where Arthur's exerting everything he can to make sure John is safe. It's sad but very honorable, Arthur knowing that he's going to die any moment now but fights until that moment comes to him.
No, the first part is shootout with Pinkertons, and the other one is fist fight with Micah. Shootout is more intense than fist fight anyway, so the music is supposed to be too
While Bill went to New Austin for make his own gang, Javier returned to Mexico for work as a hitman of Agustin Allende, Karen disappeared without trace, and Abigail, Sadie, Tilly, Trelawny, Pearson, Uncle and Jack far from the chaos.
It's kinda ironic how Arthur wears a black hat which in the old western movies signafied the villain while Micah wears a white hat which signafied the hero.
Not only that, they are wearing entirely opposite colors. Arthur = black hat, blue shirt, dark pants, light jacket, Micah = white hat, red shirt, light pants, dark jacket.
@dayum son well not really, he was a rat but he was also a viscous murderer, psychopath, and possible rapist. Not really a hero whichever way you cut it.
Best line (and cutscene for that matter) for me was when Arthur and Sister talk at that train station. - "I'm afraid." When he said that, not gonna lie I teared up a little. It was the first time Arthur seemed to show his true emotions.
Loved that line too. I felt like that line really drove him the sacrifice Arthur made for him in being the catalyst of why John tries so earnestly to take responsibility as a father and husband in RDR1. Before the time Arthur spent counseling and advising him in the last chapter, John really was lost and unsure in regard to his role with his family. It was Arthur that pulled him up and said look you have a family, they are your priority and you need to care for them and leave this life. Powerful line.
Years later, I’m still thinking about Arthur up on that mountain, holding off a small army by himself. A man as sick as him, as tired and battered as him. He stands in defiance of everything that’s weighed on him up until that moment. The doubt in his heart. The regret. The self hatred. And on that mountain he does the impossible. He overcomes all of it. Not for himself, but for John. He becomes his best self for his family.
literally in red dead redemption. He completes his arc bloody and bruised with countless peoples bloods on his hands all and all, and dies knowing he’s done his part in a rarified manner. I’d like to think that he didn’t really care what happened to him at all, he just wanted to John to succeed him. Which he did, until he did the exact thing Arthur elucidated to him not to do. It just makes Arthur’s story all the more bittersweet.
Exactly and I love how all the pieces of this song just sum up the word redemption. The violin will always make me vision Arthur just struggling fighting to his last breath. But it’s for John and his redeeming act
Very true. Arthur may've been played as high honor, low honor, somewhere in between- who knows. But no matter what he's done some pretty horrible stuff. And yet, on that mountain, sick as a dog but giving his all to protect the one last thing that meant something. Who could ever say he didn't earn his redemption there?
Been a year since I played RDR2 Bruh that line hit me like a brick because I didn't know what was going to happen to Arthur. Boy oh boy did it hit me like a brick especially with Arthur 💔
When Arthur yells out “Goddamn you bastards!!” and fires off two shots blindly really hits me. Like, Arthur was expecting to be shot to death, but instead found himself confronting Dutch and Micah again, causing him even more emotional pain, but managed to die the way he always wanted: Staring at the sunrise
Well yeah he wanted to die in 2 ways: Number 1:shot,since he said "i lived by the gun,i die by the gun" a thing like that... Number 2:watching the sunset west.... But he died eastward to simbolize that he's a new changed man(high honor) Or that he never changed and will die by his own life and best friend, the gun(low honor)
@@Giupeppe098 so in both his deaths, high and low honour, he dies in the way he wanted EDIT: I guess high honour is slightly different than what he wanted

I like to think that the aggressive guitar is Micah and the peaceful beautiful violin is Arthur and the two instruments are continuously fighting and pushing each other aside
Yeah i think that to, Because it after a few seconds the violin(arthur) comes in. (arthur battling with micah) which is when the guitar(micah)comes in and after a 1 minute or 2. The violin starts becoming quiet then fades out only for us to hear the guitar. Then in the last minute of song were just left with violin nothing else just violin that slowly fades out and then silence.
I think that the part that starts at 1:54 symbolizes that at this point, Micah is physically dominant to Arthur, and then in the last part with the violin, shows that in the end, Arthur is the winner, symbolizing his redemption.
When Arthur and Micah were fighting on the mountain and Arthur said "Can't even kill a dying man", he just reminded me that a few minutes ago I was in Saint Denis, fighting with 15 people at the same time behind the stables, and even when they were attacking together, they still couldn't kill my Arthur at his lowest point. It also reminded me that he nearly killed Tommy with his bare hands alone. So Micah basically had no chance to kill him if it wasn't for his stupid plot armor.
What's amazing is after you fight Tommy, is you see him in the valentine saloon in the mission "A quiet time". You can apologize to him, but he just mumbles. You hit his head so hard the nerves broke and he cannot talk anymore.
I remember when I first played through Arthur's fight with Micah and how amazed I was with how realistic the fight was. No fancy technique, just two men trying to kill each other
@@anthonyfernandez82And yet he never falters. Not even the looming threat of death could ever make Arthur kneel willingly, he fought up until his very last breath, hell he crawled into a better spot in his dying moments instead of just staying there.
You can almost feel Micah's chaotic and unhinged personality clashing with Arthur's civil yet violent personality. I f**king love this song. "I'm a survivor, black lung!"
It really feels like "You're my brother" feels like someone sacrificing their life for someone. But "American Venom" feels like someone sacrificing their future for someone. Sacrifice...Revenge... heavy themes Rockstar. Great work!
I do feel like if Micah wasn't killed by John he would have killed maybe a hundred more and *it feels good killing him for revenge* so I do feel like it was worth it
You're My Brother is the somber note of one's final fight, Arthur's last stand. American Venom is the triumphant reprisal. Arthur's brother, John, come to finish what Arthur started, come to finish off Micah.
On my second playthrough of this game, Micah didn't get a single hit on me that wasn't scripted. I kicked the shit out of him. It makes me happy that Arthur's last moments were spent beating that snake within an inch of his life.
Cool because I thought that's how it would normally go.. They letting Micah hammer Arthur... It must of been some guy who couldn't fight.. I was watching the cutscene movie and they guy that played Arthur sucked at fighting
Man... the moment this soundtrack kicked in and Arthur was alone on that rocky mountainside hill surrounded by lawmen, fighting on with every fibre of his being to ensure John could escape. Never had a game break my damn heart like this before. What a game, and what a legend of a man.
That shit was intense as fuck. The way the score hits with the strings as he is stumbling back shooting induced major goosebumps. I Never felt so many emotions in a game before during this whole end sequence. Sadness, anger and the pure adrenaline at the excitement of playing such an amazing scene.
@@thejademonkey1 Yeah man that exact moment you said about hit me like a brick wall, stumbling back taking pot shots at the law as that guitar kicks in with the soundtrack. Total mix of emotions, like it finally hit me that it was all coming to an end.
IMO that was the best scene in the entire game, one of the best send offs I have ever saw, that’s how a outlaw should go out, that scene alone embodied Arthur’s character, his struggle to keep his love ones alive but to remember he’s still a man by the gun. Pure badassery!!!!
Bro no lie! I took out my two guns and shouted at my tv " "Alright you fuckers come and get me! I'm the one you want!!! " I shot one in the head and the second one in the throat to bleed out as they were climbing up. The music made me feel like I actually there 😆😆😆
0:50 to 1:53 will never fail to make my eyes moisten. The raw emotion of desperation, the dying light in Arthur as he makes one last effort to be the kind of man he always should have been, and his love for John as his brother is... moving
It’s there he realised he is a good man. It’s right there facing death he realised death isn’t the end. He gave his life meaning and purpose not for Dutch or anyone else but for himself. He could finally rest knowing he is a good man that did good. GTA VI will never beat this story….
The only thing flawed with the final stand Arthur makes against the Pinkertons is that it doesn't last longer. In my own playthrough, I shot about four of them in seconds before Micah tackled me. I hoped that I would have a much longer, more dramatic final stand before Micah got there.
In order to make that last longer in my second playthrough I would on purpose miss a lot of shots. (I know Arthur is meant to be one of the greatest shots out there but consider the fact that TB was about to kill him within the next 5-10 minutes so his aim would be atrocious despite his capabilities). Also if you shoot the pinkertons down on the mountain to the left it lasts longer. That way it will last about 40 seconds ish rather than about 10-15. :)
Even the fist fight is pretty short. Beat Micah up (without getting hit) and he'll choke you on the cliff wall within 40 seconds. Then same for round 2, beat his ass and he'll tackle you under less than a minute. Fight is only prolonged if you spam the attack button because Micah has unique counter animations.
Here's my two cents as to why Micah shoots the low honor Arthur: He's what Micah aspires to be - ruthless, out for himself, greedy, a *survivor* above all. Doesn't care if society labels him a monster, because they both know it. He comforts himself by shouting "I am better than you!" and then proceeds to execute Arthur. By doing this, Micah defeats his own inner demons, and the long rival he had thought to be superior to him. As for high honor? Micah knows himself for the rat he is, he knows Arthur is dying, but frankly he doesn't care. Arthur's long past outpaced him morally and Micah knows that shooting him, finishing the deed will only cut his soul deeper, there's no point. Micah *knows* Arthur has won - unlike him, he's not dead inside.
I always read it as Micah being pissed off at Arthur's actions. By that point he knows you to be a relentless outlaw and a ruthless murderer, so he finds it insanely hypocritical that you'd choose John over trying to steal all the money from camp, and i read the high honour version of that ending as him letting Arthur have an honourable death, as he knew that if he shot him he'd be shooting a truly kind and good man. That being said, i also love your interpretation of events. I just wanted to chime in and say how i saw things. One of the most amazing things about any form of art is all the different meanings and intepretations individuals take away from it.
@@epico9856 Really, low honor Arthur is only slightly better than Micah. Forgive the cliche, but they're not too different. Arthur just has some bits of honor intact. Micah would be pissed off at him, he considers Arthur (low honor) a true threat, knowing that even giving him the slightest chance of living could prove fatal in the long run. He probably thinks high honor Arthur is an idealistic, stupid hero, and while still his rival, Micah still didn't bother finishing the deed. He's got TB, a dying man, plus the wounds inflicted will surely finish him off. Most importantly, he's scared, scared of shooting a saint, cause that'll probably haunt his days til death.
I dont think him shooting Arthur is him making sure hes not a threat in the long run because, like you said, by this point Arthur is laying on his deathbed due to his illness. To me, its just a confirmation from Micah to Arthur that no amount of good deeds that he did at the end of his life made him better than anyone else at camp.
@@epico9856 That's a fair point, but I think Micah would hate low honor Arthur more than high honor Arthur. He considers him a real enemy, a true rival, who knows that the world is cruel and that a man has to be crueller. Like I said, he has to remind himself that 'he's better than him' before shooting.
“God damn you bastards!” That line hit me like something else. A little bit of Arthur’s sarcastic self mixed with true anger against the Pinkertons and almost a plead that they let John go. Well done by Roger Clark.
"I'm a survivor, black lung! A survivor! That's all there is: living, and dying!" My favorite Micah quote, because it perfectly undelines his character and what his motivation is: When he was caught by the pinkertons, it wasn't a choice between staying loyal to the gang or betraying it. For him, it was a choice between dying or surviving.
Anders Grønodd the thing that no one is grasping is that.. revenge just locks them onto a path that everyone tried to steer them away from.. Arthur was trying to save John so John could live a normal, safe, quiet life with his family. But John Avenged Arthur by going after Micah. And that’s how the Government found John. And John tried to save Jack so he could live a normal, Safe, Quiet life. But Jack avenged John.. do you really think the Government is just gonna let Jack slide on killing Ross? They are gonna hunt him down and kill him.. all because he had to Avenge his father. Arthur learned that Revenge would cause nothing but trouble John learned it too late Jack also learned it too late. They took revenge without knowing the consequences to such an action. And doomed themselves to the same road those before tried to steer them away from.
That's one of the reasons I hated Micah he's weak Arthur was essentially on deaths doorstep about to knock on it and Micah the fucking rat couldn't even kill Arthur a weak nearly dead man and Micah still got his ass beat before arthur went out
The violins are such a nice touch. They represent Arthur's good heart finally outshining all the bad things he's done, while the guitar represents how dangerous he is as a gunslinger
I saw a comment that said something like the peaceful violin playing represented Arthur due to him being the good guy while the violent guitar represented Micah, the bad guy
“It would mean a lot to me, please.” “There aint more time for talk” “Arthur..” “Go to your family” “ARTHUR” “Get the hell outta here and be a goddamn man!” “Youre my brother”
@@animegamer3782 Hell, Arthur almost killed a dude twice as big as him (Tommy in chapter 2, the bar fight) but he just didn't want to. Imagine him fighting against a dude who is *smaller* than him and with him being healthy
People talk about how "Stand Unshaken" makes them sad, but this right here made me super sad. The music just evokes that feeling of fighting against an enemy you can't win against and the walls slowly closing in as you realize that it's all coming to a terrible end, yet you still hold on to the idea that everything will be okay.
“I’m a survivor black lung, a survivor! That’s all there is! Livin’ and dyin’....” As much as we all hate Micah its incredibly depressing that this quote encompasses his entire philosphy on life. So sad
It’s essentially social Darwinism combined with murderous psychopathy. The phrase “all’s fair in war.” Basically any dirty trick is justified as long as it works.
What saddens me is if a story like RDR2 were ever real, we would all know this man as nothing more then a criminal who deserved what was coming to him.

Every time I hear 0:29 I always remember the quote from Sister Calderón. "Take a gamble that love exists, and do a loving act!" Bravo to Rockstar for capturing the bittersweet yet badass aesthetic they went for. Some of my favorite writing and music ever!
Hosea was a true leader, without hosea dutch was piece of shit, let arthur die like that without saying anything good to him, all those words about being son to him and then this?? Fuck him, hosea lenny sean john and arthur, they were the real men
ASL if only the group split up earlier with Hosea, Lenny, Sean, John and Arthur. Along with the ladies, cept Grimshaw (F her lol) I think they’d be okay. After all, damn pinkertons was after Dutch mostly.
John: "You're my brother." Arthur: "I know. I know." That hits alot because John and Arthur were never good about expressing their emotions. They were hardened men in which through their life longed for a love they thought would never come. John saying to Arthur "you're my brother" is his way of telling Arthur that he loves him. And Arthur saying "I know" is his way of telling John he knows he loves him, and he loves him back. It's a fantastic moment yet very sad.
They had their beef at the beginning of the game but when shit started getting real and people were actually dying, they realized just how childish their beef was and made up. Arthur was usually the one starting arguments with John and yet Arthur gave his life for him in the end
I had a perfect music cue when arthur yelled "Goddamn you bastards" at the Pinkertons at 0:50 honestly made the scene more impactful through my run in the game 😢
I got genuine chills when the violins kicked in at 0:50 to 1:32. To me the intensity of the theme itself represents Arthur's willpower to keep fighting for John as well as feeling like the big conclusion to all the fights he's had before and as soon as the violins come in it's like a reminder of how Arthur is gradually getting weaker and this'll really be his last stand. Another thing I really loved and made me cry is how that same violin medley plays as Arthur is giving his little speech to Micah whilst using the last of his strength in an attempt to reach for the gun. I'm so glad this masterpiece of a game won best soundtrack of the year.
I love the differences between High Honor and Low Honor Arthur as he gives John his hat. High Honor tells John it would mean a lot to him if he took it because John was like a brother to him. Low Honor tells John he doesn’t have a use for it anymore, because as far as he’s concerned he’s dying anyway so he may as well let John have it. It’s such a minuscule detail but tiny changes like that make playing Arthur in general so satisfying. It doesn’t matter if you play him in High Honor, Low Honor, or some sort of mid ground. He feels like an actual person, no matter the kind of stuff you get him into.
William Morris I thought Arthur and Milton were going to have a showdown in the plains close to Blackwater at the place his wife and child died. If only
So sad how Arthur knew he was going to die. It was really sad when Micah says stuff like "It's over, you can't win!" And Arthur responds with, "on the contrary Micah, I have won." He didn't win for himself, he won when he got John back to his family.
At 0:24 when the drums kicked in as Arthur stands there at the top of the mountain holding off them Pinkertons I knew this was it. I wasn't prepared, but Arthur was. He took Sister Calderon words to heart and "Took a gamble that love exists and do a loving act." As other people have commented, Arthur is a powerful man literally, like a western Hercules of sorts, but this track reminds you that his willpower was far greater than what TB could ever take from him.
I love what you wrote here "This tract reminds you that his willpower was far greater than what TB could ever take from him." I don't know why but I really needed to read this, thank you and be safe.

I agree as well, but I think Rockstar is preoccupied with RDR 2 Online. They said they were going to release online at the end of November but we still have yet to hear from them about it.
He's the greatest video game villain of all time in my opinion. Almost any other game would've made him a one note villain that doesn't feel like a real human being.
I really like this song because at this point in the story Arthur has already accepted his demise. He knows there is no way for him to get out of here alive, so he sacrifices himself for john. This isn’t about survival anymore, it’s about doing the right thing. This is the moment Arthur gets his redemption.
alright ladies and gentlemen, here’s my take on the situation. these are things to keep in mind: Arthur requested to die/be buried facing west so he could remember all the good times in the gang you get a buck for high honour, an eagle for neutral and a coyote for low honour. now consider this: Arthur died facing east. he died facing the ‘wrong way’. except that’s why it’s so poetic. he had his back turned on the outlaw life. he may still have been reminiscing, but he died facing a new day. the new dawn of another era. which brings me to my next point. Arthur did many bad things over the course of the 20+ years he spent in the gang. that’s why there’s an eagle on his grave if you’re high honour. how he died evened it out. kind of long but I hope you liked it :)
Icecream Sundae I think they mean you’ll find an eagle on Arthur’s grave. Depending on your honor. Other than that only the buck and coyote dream occur.
Arthur survived the night, his trial of fire. Long enough to see the sun one last time. In his final moments he knew honestly and truthfully he found his meaning ans purpose in life. He finished his mission, he saved John and lived to see a new day...as a better man.

And yet, on that mountain, sick as a dog but giving his all to protect the one last thing that meant something. Who could ever say he didn't earn his redemption there?
The line “we ain’t both gonna make it” hit really hard.

He wanted to stare at the sunset, but in the end he had changed a lot. The sunrise shows this.
And yet not even everyone got a shot on him until micah ambushes him
Well yeah he wanted to die in 2 ways:
Number 1:shot,since he said "i lived by the gun,i die by the gun" a thing like that...
Number 2:watching the sunset west....

I like to think that the aggressive guitar is Micah and the peaceful beautiful violin is Arthur and the two instruments are continuously fighting and pushing each other aside
That's actually very smart
That’s brilliant!
Holy jesus. Music

The only thing flawed with the final stand Arthur makes against the Pinkertons is that it doesn't last longer. In my own playthrough, I shot about four of them in seconds before Micah tackled me. I hoped that I would have a much longer, more dramatic final stand before Micah got there.
yeah yeah, more shooting time will make the feeling accumulates as the music play through
In order to make that last longer in my second playthrough I would on purpose miss a lot of shots.
@@andrejissitt1635 eh.
I always thought the part with Dutch and Micah chasing Arthur and John could've gone on longer too, dodging shots etc.
Here's my two cents as to why Micah shoots the low honor Arthur:
He's what Micah aspires to be - ruthless, out for himself, greedy, a *survivor* above all.
@@painkiller7010 I agree with you here, i certainly think hes shooting Arthur for some peace of mind and self fulfilment

@@Dwevy i think cuz it shows Arthur is just a human, No super strength, no time stoping powers (deadeye is supposed to be his reaction time, he does not slow time), no anything, just a human being with a strong will and loyalty that what Arthur really is, A man with a strong human will
@@themultiversegamer551 tbh even if hes dying today from TB if im ever gonna fight him with fist or guns ill definitely just back off
Beautiful comment sir
i think that cause it after a few seconds the violin(arthur) comes in. (arthur battling with micah) which is when the guitar(micah)comes in and after a 1 minute or 2. The violin starts becoming quiet then fades out only for us to hear the guitar. Then in the last minute of song were just left with violin nothing else just violin that slowly fades out and then silence.

Damn, Rockstar, release the official album already, these tracks are golden
Artyom Shamanov Agreed.
Ikr, it's been almost a month soon. Need it asap!
I agree as well, but I think Rockstar is preoccupied with RDR 2 Online. They said they were going to release online at the end of November but we still have yet to hear from them about it.

@@chopsuey004 omg thank you.
Micah is such a goodamn character and antagonist. Change my mind
This is the moment Arthur gets his redemption.
alright ladies and gentlemen, here’s my take on the situation. these are things to keep in mind:
Arthur requested to die/be buried facing west so he could remember all the good times in the gang
you get a buck for high honour, an eagle for neutral and a coyote for low honour.
now consider this:
Arthur died facing east. he died facing the ‘wrong way’. except that’s why it’s so poetic. he had his back turned on the outlaw life. he may still have been reminiscing, but he died facing a new day. the new dawn of another era. which brings me to my next point. Arthur did many bad things over the course of the 20+ years he spent in the gang. that’s why there’s an eagle on his grave if you’re high honour. how he died evened it out.
kind of long but I hope you liked it :)
Icecream Sundae I thought I was the only one who realized he was facing and eastern sunrise instead of a western sunset! I love your take on it
there is no eagle
hugh janus oh, is there not? I’ve heard there was, but there we go. The more you know :)

This theme perfectly captures the essence of fighting to the very end no matter what. Fighting for what you know is righteous
So much pain... so much sadness and sorrow... so much power and glory... but full of beauty and redemption...
I want to hear this before I die...
We have to appreciate how Arthur & Micah are complete opposites.
Arthur is loyal to the gang
Micah is loyal to himself
Arthur is Honourable
Micah is not honourable
Arthur has a black hat, blue shirt, light coat
Micah had a white hat, red shirt, dark coat
Such a nice detail
Your choices depend on how you perceive it, but I feel like honorable is the canon route.
@@TheVoidofemptiness redemption is in the title but whatever
@@Xavier28200 i know, I just wanted to state the obvious
Also Arthur is fit and strong
Micah is fat and weak
@@ghostdrew4887 Arthur’s skinny in the game I know because in the second Mary Linton mission if Arthur is not underweight she says Arthur used to be so skinny so to me that means in the story he’s underweight but underweight to some people is fit
0:49-1:38 I love how this violin note is always played at the end of Arthur's journey. From the rescue of Abigail Roberts, to the death of your horse, and at Arthur's last stand. It just gives me the feeling of everything coming to the end as you still try fighting on as you are slowly weakening.
Really?
a violin is also weaker abd more emotional (notes are less defined, different overtones etc.) this really compliments this scene
See this is why i love the game. Its a masterpiece. Every piece of music, every little detail, the characters and dialogues..... You get attached to them so much that you feel like they're all real.
I loved this part of the music and all the music that plays when our horse dies
