  • The African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa formed a coalition government with right-wing parties after losing their majority for the first time in 30 years. Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, spokesperson for the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), the biggest labor union in the country, discusses the implications on South Africa's working class as the country faces widespread poverty and inequality.

South Africa's resistance to apartheid is morally the ONLY right thing but it has increased the country's brand in the global majority unimaginably and SA is becoming a leader in the world. When SA speaks, even whites in the West also listen. SOFT POWER. By the way, Israel is 10 million, who cares about this country. I can very well imagine that a multi-millionaire from Western Asia, because of SA's position, wants to invest and maybe settle in SA. That's 2 billion Muslims, that's 100 times more than Israel, which has 50 percent of all the energy in the world. There is nothing to gain from this.

There is a point that requires self-criticism, friends in south africa who have relatives (black), vote for the DA, because of CORRUPTION, they think that the Western Cape works better and you can do business. There will always be a right-wing bloc in a population that wants to make money, the state sees. enemy. You have a right to these opinions. The space for DA is the system that the ANC created, you can't win people with words like Blinken talk about spreading democracy, can't eat democracy. That the DA has been able to gain this advantage is the fault of the ANC and Jacob Zuma. You have to pass the basics in a society, if you are an entrepreneur, the conditions must be long-term. Not having new national comprise is bad for the whites.
BUT The international trend is NOT neoliberal DA politics, but NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY, and multipolar control over banks/national natural resources in the form of minerals, oil, etc. Otherwise, the oligarchs will take over democracy. I am most afraid of BRICS, and that the DA is completely in the lap of US imperialism, they want to arrest Putin, South Africa will participate during the BRICS meetings or the DA will make embarrassing statements. We are facing a time when the entire architecture of the financial system is being redrawn, everything requires consensus in BRICS. South Africa has been the driving progressive force in BRICS, for example bringing in Ethiopia. Olof Palme's and Sweden's leading role in fighting imperialism, the Vietnam war and anti-Apaheid business-wise for the Swedish brand, this was a success. South Africa state the criticism of the Zionist entity Israel, hold harsh statements that Israel accepts, theater and practice become nothing. Undermining South Africa as a leader in Africa and the global majority. 10 million in Israel there is NO reason to throw this away. Above all MORAL, some struggles are right, in this case Sweden became and South Africa is STRONGER. Administration's social democracy with technocrats is dangerous, all of a sudden Tony Blair light.

  • @perpirat123
    @perpirat123 Před měsícem +1

The agreement negotiated in 1993 was a necessary compromise to avoid a civil war, in which the mostly white land and capital-owning class were allowed to retain their privileges in exchange for the ANC gaining political power. 40 years NOTHING happens despite the 2/3 majority. A new settlement must come between the DA and the EFF. Actually, I think that no mines should be owned by foreign companies or individuals in this. South Africa should have an oil fund like in Norway, because the social democratic system distributes the surplus to new investments and eg housing construction. Unfortunately, you have to compromise, you want massive speculation against the currency and paralysis of the system. It is quite reasonable that those with vast land holdings, get a limit in size (hard for me to say the limit), and these are distributed to the region, distributed among mostly poor. There are white and colored poor. Buy self-produced food. Win Win. This is unreasonable, sooner or later the majority turns and it even more radical. I am Swedish, the ANC is what the social democrats in my country were before the 90s, the task of the social democrats is to bring about reformist compromise as sustainable, which establishes democratic socialism. Then MUST put the foot down or it will be administration of neoliberalism. It is NOT GOOD, even catastrophic if a majority of at least 60 percent feel they have not received anything for 30 years. They feel as threatened as the whites in 1993. If you are talking national unity, this is the OPPOSITE.
The ANC seems as inept as the other European social democratic parties. It will never EFF wants, but must have a center of gravity that reflects society.

My view there is no way we will ever ever go back to apartheids days there is no ways .. people are scared and respectfully so they have reason to be ...if... You come from that era... However.... We need to move forward..my opinion..and my hope.. and hope is not always a strategy.. however at this point in my life and for the sake of the children in south Africa to have any chance of living a good life in South Africa we couldn't keep going on the path of disaster. So you know what rather let this gnu go ahead and we will all as citizens see how this play out and in five years we can vote again and change the way we vote but for me and afcourse my opinion I would like that my hard earned salary taxes gets used for proper service delivery no matter the race that leads this country. Let's drop the race card it's not helping. 30 years into democracy and we have black on white and white on black issues . But funny enough most of us work well with different races or kids play with different races we have friends of different races ..we go to church with different races. We watch sport and braai with different races . It's the few people in this country that wants to still divide us.. there is alot more to be worried about than to stress about which political party says what whose policy says what. We have an economy to repair. Jobs to increase.. infrastructure to be fixed. This list goes on and on. But we also have much to be thankful for aswell. The past hurts for most but that era is over yes we shouldn't forget those that suffererd but in my opinion there is more violence and killing happening these days over nonsense that is even worst what happened years ago. Don't let the politicians devide you and us as a nation. Goodluck to us all.. forward we go..

@@cathypotgieter6345 The African people who vote for and are members of the DA I can classify into three categories. 1. Is the "clever blacks", oreos or coconuts because they are the type that went to white schools and have developed an admiration for Europeans and their teachings. They worship Freemarket economics as if it is their messiah. They have been taught only that and have never cared to consider the Communist or Socialist Ideologies from a scientific sober factual perspective. All they know is that capitalism is the only way and socialism is evil and will be the end of the world. The are called Tea girls because of their admiration for European ideals it shows that they are not intelligent enough to question those ideals. If they did question those ideals the chances are that they wouldn't be impressed if they appreciated the facts of the history and current agenda of Europeans. 2. Is the ones that have developed an admiration for whites because they have witnessed whites being in a positions of leadership and succeed while also witnessing a lot of blacks fail. If you saw the public consultations on the ammendment of section 25 of the constitution... There were a number of elderly blacks who said that whites should keep the land because blacks don't know how to farm. They think so highly of white people because it is their lived reality. They actually subconsciously believe that they are onferior to whites. The there are the opportunistic ones who are there for material gain. I know because I do know a few who are DA members in areas where there are no white people. They don't believe in DA policies nor care really about politics, they are there because that is what puts bread on the table.

I've watched many of your brilliant broadcasts of the war on Gaza and applauded your investigative, objective journalism on the brutal conflict. Frankly, you've earned my respect and, I'm sure, the admiration of countless viewers.
When your show popped up on CZcams - although it's past midnight here in South Africa - I chose to watch it despite the late night hour. However, not even three minutes into your show, and I lost respect for compromising your values of objective reporting. Respectively, it appears that you haven't done your homework.
Your guest might have misled you and some of your American viewers, but she can't play that same tune to South Africans and expect us to dance to her incoherent tune.
Fact is: Since Jacob Zuma became president of RSA, the bulk of the South African population - who are black and marginalized - had become victims of putrid service delivery, growing poverty, runaway youth unemployment and rampant corruption. Whatever the ANC-government has touched for the past 30 years has gone from bad to worse. Guess what? The black majority of South African citizens have been on the receiving end, and those voters have vehemently rejected the ANC!
Moreover, after May 29, the ANC extended invitations to all political parties to become part of the GNU. Yet. both the EFF and the newly-formed MKP - led by a former ANC president, Jacob Zuma - plus smaller parties were invited, but they refused and declined the offer.
Unlike the USA, where blatant racism has become more pronounced - especially in law enforcement agencies - our country, despite having 11 different languages and many ethnic groups, is a more united country. It's only your far-left and right political formations that are adamant to sow division in our country. In case you think I'm white and have voted for the DA; I am not and haven't voted for them.
I've traveled to the US since 1993, and strangely, mostly African Americans made me aware of the color of my skin. Color in the US is not only a big issue; it's a huge issue!
Unlike the pessimistic views of your guests, our beloved country is on the verge of becoming a more united and prosperous country! Thank God Almighty, your guest is in the minority and her divided views shall not prevail in our beloved country!
The best is yet to come for South Africa!

If anyone from South Africa can, explain a little bit about the economy in South Africa, & how bad it is there, what's the political climate like there right now, that would really help me to understand South Africa a little bit more, so I can have a more nuanced view on this topic.

Older people lived through apartheid, the people who now speak about apartheid no nothing and should not speak about it apartheid fell away in 1994. What has ANC done for the people. Over the 30 years the country has fallen apart. What has the rich our people do for the lesson fortunate brothers and sisters. Nothing because the rich are comfortable. A living wage and more jobs are needed not fancy talk. Educate yourselves on the needs of South Africans and forget about Hamas terrorist and Israel. South Africans first always. You don't need to have lived through apartheid to know what happened. There is a lot of literature on that subject. If you don't know the past then you couldn't possibly comprehend the present and therefore couldn't possibly find solutions that would not only satisfy the current needs but build a foundation that would see this country reach its full economic potential. The issue of Gaza is also very much in the hearts of the Africans who know what the Palestinian Liberation Organisation has done for us in the struggle for our liberation. We wouldn't be whare we are today if it wasn't for organizations like the PLO. The Palestinians were able to provide sympathize with our struggle because they were going through the same struggle and we also sympathize with them because we went through the same thing. Narrow nationalism will not lead to anything. South Africa is too small a territory to be able to function optimally on its own without the development of the neighboring territories and the African continent as a whole.

Love seeing the critics hate on people like this lady. They'll say "what 30 years of ANC of corruption" or "what about BEE being bad because companies can only hire based on race, not on merit" or "what about the WC being the only province in SA that works" bla bla bla. These critics are always silent when we mention WEE (white economic empowerment), here's 4 things that show how WEE was far more powerful than BEE:
    1. In 1910, when the Brits formed SA, they passed a law that allowed only white people to vote.
    2. They made it illegal for black people to own or buy land
    3. They introduce minimum wage to poor white workers only, not black. They also passed a law that encouraged companies to hire as many white workers as possible in order to win more contracts.
    4. They passed a law forbidding black people to travel freely in South Africa, requiring them to carry special IDs.
84 years of this, but they say the ANC has had more than enough time to undo these changes. The DA fearmongers by calling a ANC/EFF/MK coalition a "doomsday", saying that the markets will crash if such a coalition were to happen. Those markets, as per the JSE, are controlled and owned by companies that came to existence during and thanks to Apartheid laws. We need radical policies in SA. The markets won't crash, SA is part of BRICS and can seek the help of superpower partners.

What an interesting and thought provoking broadcast comparing the right and left wing in the USA with S.A. It might be an awesome exercise for your journalism prowess to see how this comparison translates into the S.A political landscape since we are more of a multi-party state like Germany, dispite the American pop-culture we so fondly adopt here :). Interestingly, in my humble opinion, I have noticed much similarities between the populist nature and strategies of Donald Trump in the USA and the political strategies of our 'Leftist' politicians closely associated with the ANC, EFF, MK parties, locally. Internationally, the `S.A. left` is also pushing hard for BRICS talks, which includes talks about the de-dollarization and closer ties with China and Russia, which the DA (the so called 'Right') , to my knowledge, does not pursue. Like I said, what and interesting project this investigation would be.

-ANC lost because of MK party not because of a failure to lean further left
-The DA and ANCs policy offerings don't align on a lot of things but the ANC still represents the majority in the coalition so its not like the DA is just going to have their own way about everything
-30 years on from Apartheid (30 years of ANC government) and still no 100% black owned business on the stock exchange is an argument for how ineffective BEE has turned out to be
-No party in the entire election across the political spectrum campaigned on foreign policy and it won't change under GNU
