      Great Review and Demo work Sir, Thank You.
      Also, a Shout-Out of thanks to Mr. Nichols for the demo, outstanding.
      As for the aging, I've seen more than a few real '60s Gibson with the Polaris White that looked very similar to your aged example.
      They're all a little different (real and relic), some of the vintage guitars I've handled made me think the finish was going to chip off in large flakes.
      Something about the solid colored finish, they typically seem much thicker than a traditional transparent finish you'd typically find on a burst!
      Just saying.

      @TheMichiganfan97
      I'm sure you don't mean to be dismissive or jump to conclusions, but your comment kind of bothered me. I am a player. I would never (be able to or want to) buy a $10,000.00 instrument - especially not one artificially "aged" with razorblades. But my point about the rout: there's something to be said about craft, about caring about one's work, whether that craft is making music or making instruments. And if you're charging ten grand for an instrument, well, do the job right. Make your routs clean. Take pride in your work - even when that work won't be seen by most people. I know a handful of luthiers, and when they work on my instruments, they take care in what they do. Just watch twoodfrd's account you'll get a sense of what I'm saying. (Link below)
      I'm sure you're a cool person and, again, that you didn't mean to come off as rude or jump to conclusions. I'm a player; I'm not a collector. I maintain my instruments - none of which are very expensive. I have a Bass VI, a Precision I bought new in the late 80s (and on which a luthier put a nice fretless ebony fingerboard about a year after I bought it), a Carvin LB6 I bought new in the late 90s, and a cheap Ibanez TMB100 I purchased last summer. I'm not your enemy, not some collector who cares more about how an instrument looks than how it plays. And I don't want to argue with you or get into a flame war. I just wanted to explain myself. Craftsmanship matters - and it especially matters when you're a giant corporation charging ten thousand dollars for "signature" guitar based on an instrument Hendrix played on TV one time. We're on the same side, I'd think. It's Gibson that's turning the instruments we love into museum pieces for the wealthy to gawk at. And too often they do it with the attention to detail a small-time luthier would be embarrassed by.
      Take care.

      @dank8865 Před 3 lety +3

      Lol - if you can get them to do it, don't be surprised if it's a huge seller with players - not collectors - players. There's a lot of players out there who don't feel comfortable with a Gibson unless it's got a headstock repair. Contrary to what Trogly says, a repaired break is not a weak spot. Quite the opposite, it's now probably the strongest spot on the neck. If anything, it'll be problematic as it will shift the next break further up the neck (in most cases, that will be into the face of the headstock, into the tuning machines.)
      Anyway, a lot of players, if they have 3 identical Gibsons from which to choose and 1 is clean and unbroken, 1 has a severe but professionally and almost impossible to see repair, & the last is the same but with the addition of splines, they'll snatch that spline job in a heartbeat.
      A well done, professional spline repair will increase the strength of that neck & decrease the potential for future breaks to where many players I know prefer them.

    Ahh the Hendrix SG... I gotta say, it would be great if they actually made it true to 67 specs. It can be priced whatever they want, but the fact they just used a generic early 60s RI body and joint is a big letdown. That is the WRONG type of joint. A true 67, including his original, has a bigger joint that extends to the 19th fret. It's simply an insult to SG fans to call it a 67 spec.

      @Tim8tei Před 3 lety +2

      Good point. I think the relicing is or could be used into deceiving the mind, because it looks old/checking/aging/... it also plays and sounds old. And even though it isn't, you'll be tricked into it is.

      I have a relic’d custom shop strat and it is by far the best new guitar I’ve ever played. The key to me is the relicd guitars, when done right, play like they are broken in. The neck is sanded and the fretboard rounded, which makes it incredibly comfortable to play. I love it.
      That being said, Gibson, despite the fact I love a lot of their guitars, is awful at relicing. This SG looks terrible. Plus, it is a signature guitar that was played by the artist when it was new, so it should not be relic’d. If the artists guitar was worn, relicing to match would make sense, but that is not the case here

    The best way to use a Gibson vibrato system? Don't. Since we are just going to slap anybody's name on an instrument, call it a sig, and charge $10K I can't wait for the Stevie Ray Vaughn Les Paul. Why even bother with a name? Just reissue a random model, call it the $15K Limited Edition of the week, and watch the orders roll in. Oh and they are going to slash the hell out of it with a rusty switchblade? That's gonna be another $5k.
    Gibson: When form matters more than function, but the form is pretty rough too. Also Jimi's didn't look like that when he played it. It was a brand new guitar. I think they push the relic jobs so they can get away with all their cosmetic flaws.
