yes as a guitar its junk. As a piece of History Priceless. Why? Because its a one of a few that survive and without it we would have a missing link situation in the history of The Electric Guitar.
$1,999 for a guitar that was gonna be $199 as a guitar package.... oh wait... It's for collector's... Yeah. $2000 plus shipping seems rite. Is there a market for people who pay in the thousands and collect "cheap guitar packages that where never to have been?" I really didn't know there was a market for that. I can see limited run series of guitars themselves. But man, I better go grab that epiphone les paul special II Slash edition guitar package before Gibson stops making them..........
@@dominicvega9267 I think you're fundamentally misunderstanding it though. The package and guitar were never actually released, and for the "woo-woo" part, you're getting one of the few of them made and an effort to create another part of Jimi's legacy. An Epiphone LP Special 2 package has no value because there's been enough of them to make them worthless to a collector, while there's a handful of these guitars at most. That's called a maple cap fretboard. The reason Gibson did this I'm assuming, is because Hendrix's 69 Strat, was made with maple cap fretboard on a maple neck, hence no skunk stripe. That's actually a sign of really good quality.
I have a '62 Vintage Reissue Fender Stratocaster built in 1982 (first year they did the Vintage Reissue series). It's one of the finest sounding and playing Strats I've ever come across. It came with the three position switch for authenticity but you can easily get the two in between spots with practice, just like Jimi did.
@@wesleyalan9179 Yeah man I'd never sell it. My Dad, RIP, was a guitar collector among other things. When Fender came out with those first reissues he bought 3 of them. When I was a kid and decided to switch from piano to guitar (thanks to first discovering Hendrix!) he gave me that one. Of course i loved it because it's what Jimi played but as I got older I realized what a great axe it really was. He had a good sense about picking out guitars because those initial "Vintage Reissue" series are now actually vintage and collectible in their own right. And it does stand up to the real deal because he had quite a few real vintage strats too, including a '59, 60 and a 62 and it plays, feels and sounds at least as good as the real ones! Cheers from Louisiana 👍🎸🔊
This is amazing. Thank you so much for getting this put together so quickly! Such a weird instrument, and quite a mockery of the Hendrix name to even think about doing this imo, but I can see where they were coming from with the idea. If anyone deserves to make a Hendrix line of guitars, it should be Fender, or maybe they could partner with Gibson to make Strats and Flying V's! But not this....anything but this lol the copyright thing is bullshit man! I thought fair use covered stuff like this. I won 2 different disputes over a couple guitar covers I did and won on the grounds of fair use, parodying the original song. Last one wasn't too long ago
Once a while back for shits and giggles I photoshopped a fender neck onto aLes Paul and a Gibson neck onto a Strat. It was an unholy abomination but quite funny.
LOL, a GREAT Story that needed to be told! Thank you so much for your Detective work. Pretty smart posting the Copyright Claimed Version in a separate video (great playing too, the Force is strong in you). It would have been nice to see Gibson offer a Custom Shop Hendrix Custom SG.
Back in the 1960s, Strats with maple fretboards were made with a separate board onto the maple neck, with no skunk stripe in the back. This was how they did the rosewood boards at the time, too, so it was easier to manufacture all the necks the same way. Of course, I suspect the motivation on THIS guitar was just to have it be done cheaper, rather than striving for historical authenticity.
Wow, I remember the furor even the notion of this guitar existing caused. People went insane that Gibson 1. even tried to make a Strat and 2. copied someone else's design after suing PRS over a singlecut guitar.
I just recently learned of this atrocity, and now you've actually got one, what timing! And yes, the Strats of the late sixties had three-way switches and separate maple fretboards instead of the one-piece necks.
It’s really ironic that Gibson got the rights for Hendrix given that Hendrix was by all means a fender Strat player. But I like the look of it. That is the on with the fire bird head stock. It’s a nice psychedelic version of a strat.
Hi Trogly, not sure if anyone's mentioned in the comments but the old trick with three way switches on strats is the match trick, simply stick a match in the back of the selector switch and it holds the switch between the bridge and middle pickup
And satin finishes on the necks are quite common on Strats, actually. They are easier to play, superior to the sticky lacquer (or poly) finishes that more expensive, inferior Strats have.
It's an Epiphone Strat, they're capable of that task. I get what they were doing. They had a licensing deal with Jimi's family and respectfully recognized that his trademark guitar was a Strat, They had to give it a try so they could sell a Jimi style guitar. I'm not mad that they tried, and I'm not mad that they pulled it at the 11th hour.
Corrections: Fender usually makes a two piece maple neck these days, not one. And no, on most Chinese guitars, you certainly do NOT need to change the nut. You obviously have very little experience with them.
The second position of the pickup switch (middle) is actually wired to neck+middle pickups in this guitar. Thus it has bridge pickup alone, middle+neck and neck alone.
If I remember rightly there were talks between the estate and Fender because Fender were the obvious choice, but Fender pulled out because the estate wanted far too much money and control (the fact that this guitar has a signature on the headstock instead of a logo for example). It’s the same as the Hendrix biopic - they wanted huge amounts for the original back catalogue, so they had to make the film without any of his own stuff. That missed part of the point of the man as his songwriting was just as important, so meant for a worse film. Janie and the estate have a lot to answer for!
Gotta love the irony of Gibso putting out a Strat copy after suing other guitar manufactures for the slightest similarities to Les Pauls/SGs/Flying Vs/Explorers, etc.
From what it sounds like to me, the middle position of the three-way switch is wired to select not just the middle pickup, but the middle pickup together with the bridge pickup. And this in turn would be consistent with the stock wiring of the middle position on three-pickup Gibsons.
Interesting guitar. I understand why Gibson pulled the plug on it. Hendrix played a Fender Stratocaster. I like the volute on the neck. I think it's a little awkward to launch an official Hendrix line of guitars seeing how he died a long time ago and everyone knows he played a real authentic Stratocaster. Also, how many beginner kids even know who Mr. Hendrix was?
Somewhere there's a container with 5,000 of these guitars, in their cardboard box with the amp, ect... In 25 years it will be auctioned off on a reality show. Gibson Hendrix guitars will suddenly saturate the market.
This is exactly like if Adidas decided to make a Kobe tribute sneaker and made it look exactly like the Nike Zoom 4 even though they already had Kobe branded shoes of their own to use as a basis. Gibson could have made their Hendrix tribute be an SG or Flying V, because he had a history of playing them. WTF were they thinking
It sold originally for about $500 and you are asking $2,000 for it? This is the only one in existence and it sold for $500 and you are asking $2,000 for it? Austin, I know you are just going by the supposed value of this guitar but if it were me I would slap a $10,000 price tag on this puppy and see how much you can get!! Some Hendrix fan would gladly pay over $2,000 for this VERY rare guitar!! I like this one! Iam not a Strat guy but this one catches my eye, I love extra long arm comfort cut and that head stock is awesome!! It sounds typical Strat to me, quack quack quack lol, but usually with some adjustments to the pickup heights you can get some of that out. This is a very cool guitar! I will be honest with ya, when I first read the title for this video I was not that interested but I thought what the heck, Austin will learn me something new again lol. I couldn't stop watching it because I was so interested in the guitar! Great video, thanks for more edumacation (lol old redneck term) and man I would certainly jack that price up dude! c'mon you got a REAL rare one here, cash in on it!!
Don't know why so many get upset about this guitar, it's a decent package for a fan. I'd never buy any instrument with another artist's name on it though, I prefer my instruments to be a blank slate for creating my own sound. Isn't that the whole point of being an artist?
The reason is simply because they were not only shamelessly trying to make bank off a dead man, but they could have done this deal with company who owns the guitar that Jimi played. I wouldn't want a Chuck Schuldiner Stealth guitar made by ESP. Or a Jeff Hanneman guitar made by Ibanez. They didn't play those companies' guitars.
I'm wondering if that middle position is the bridge and neck together. I read somewhere that Jimi's strat was wired like a Tele, with the middle pickup wired directly to a separate volume pot, so you can mix the middle pickup signal into the Tele circuit signal, and that's how you get the 2 and 4 selector positions
This is the entry level Gibson Hendrix model, and the only one I've ever seen, congrats. The high end model was being made in the USA factory. It would have a set neck, and would debut a new Steinberger Trans-Trem. The idea was what would Jimi order in today's world of custom guitars. Younger guys need to realize that guitar gods in the 70's bought there gear off the rack. There were very few artists models, in 1970, and custom orders were not happening for Clapton, Page, or Hendrix. I've seen a mock up of the high end Gibson Hendrix and it seemed cool, if only it hadn't been called a Hendrix guitar. It was not a well thought out idea, but, I would not want viewers to think that this China model was the idea Gibson was after, it's just the one that got away.
Max Mustermann - That was the plan. Check out last 2 photos in this article gear-vault.com/gibson-hendrix-strat-people-are-pissed/ They had a few racks of the higher end units ready for paint. You can see it has a set neck, not a bold on, and routed for the Steinberger Transtrem, (which Gibson owns).
Reminds me of a buddy who wanted to be a biker so badly he slapped a load of Oriental bike parts together with Harley stickers and surface crap - we called it the " rice fed hog " lmao
i sometimes hates guitarists, many of them are stuck in the past and isnt even born that time to experiencing it and everything post hendrix/stevie is soulless copycats and everything that isnt in a shape of a fender/gibson classic is weird to them. I called them pretentious at best
This guitar pissed me off just as much as everyone else, however I still really wanted one solely for the reverse-angled bridge pickup. IMO, that's how all strats should be.
Great guitar - should have been released - also at higher end. The reversed headstock seems logical and reverse skewed bridge pickup would respond to different harmonics.
John Henfrey Leon had a loooong history of drug abuse and wasn’t able to mange himself, let alone something as huge as the Hendrix estate. Al, Jimi’s father, knew better than to turn over control of tens (hundreds?) of millions of dollars to a junkie. Leon has subsequently turned himself around and is no longer strung out. Unfortunately Janie is the Devil and won’t do the right thing and bring him into the mix. She has destroyed Jimis legacy.
@CZcams really needs to change their policies on copyright claims. I mean, just jamming on a guitar by yourself to demo the sounds, does not take away from original recording artists record sales or infringe on their content. That sucks. Sorry Trogly. Rock on, man.
Dude. I had to get a new phone?”, and had to create a new CZcams account, and this is the first time watching your video in a long time, and that intro was so damn nostalgic
A Hendrix-inspired strat with no 2nd and 4th position? Blasphemy! Also, Jimi took the spring out of his 3-way selectors so that there was no notching for the 3 positions, making it easier to get the in-between positions
Another authentic Gibson design... Jimi, like Elvis and many others, has been working hard ever since he passed away. Who's ever pulling in the money on this one should be ashamed; Jimi's still being used as a workhorse for profit... Great video. Just when I thought I couldn't have more heartburn with Gibson, this guitar proved me wrong!

Gibson neck on a strat, the black sky !!!?
I like that. Lol
Looks like Janie claimed you for playing purple haze. She is such a terrible person to be in charge of such a great musical legacy.
Strangely enough, it was claimed as "I heard it through the grapevine" which it clearly wasn't... haha
@@Trog at least you got some Jane's in there.
I honestly like the way it looks. I would be into it if it wasn't a Hendrix disgracing cash grab.
Exactly my thoughts
Right!
Check out the Sixty-Six in Fender's new alternate reality line, has somewhat of a similar profile but without being a cashgrab
Colonel Sanders not to mention it’s a good product
Sounds awful
Back in the 1960s, Strats with maple fretboards were made with a separate board onto the maple neck, with no skunk stripe in the back. This was how they did the rosewood boards at the time, too, so it was easier to manufacture all the necks the same way.
Of course, I suspect the motivation on THIS guitar was just to have it be done cheaper, rather than striving for historical authenticity.
Legit just came on here to watch your videos
Nothing better than a awesome trogly Vid on my birthday. Keep it up!
Aaron Kern happy birthday
Wow, I remember the furor even the notion of this guitar existing caused. People went insane that Gibson 1. even tried to make a Strat and 2. copied someone else's design after suing PRS over a singlecut guitar.
Good lord. What is that thing?!?!?!
"every babe that weeps in fear at its approach, every woman that cries 'Dear God, what is that thing?' This guitar understands what To The Pain means.
A waste of money.
I remember when this was being discussed on the message boards. After all the negative reactions I wasn’t surprised to see it disappear.
The part where you play "Purple Haze" at 29:02 sounds awesome...
Trogs you knocked it out of the park with this one!
I just recently learned of this atrocity, and now you've actually got one, what timing!
And yes, the Strats of the late sixties had three-way switches and separate maple fretboards instead of the one-piece necks.
Love this Trogly blast from the past.
They are easier to play, superior to the sticky lacquer (or poly) finishes that more expensive, inferior Strats have.
nitro is standard on high end maple neck strats
It's an Epiphone Strat, they're capable of that task. I get what they were doing. They had a licensing deal with Jimi's family and respectfully recognized that his trademark guitar was a Strat, They had to give it a try so they could sell a Jimi style guitar. I'm not mad that they tried, and I'm not mad that they pulled it at the 11th hour.
Wow! It exists! Keep it, you know you want to :-)
Corrections: Fender usually makes a two piece maple neck these days, not one.
And no, on most Chinese guitars, you certainly do NOT need to change the nut. You obviously have very little experience with them.
The blast of reeking cheese must have been overwhelming when you unboxed it.
Nice "authentic" comment in the lower right corner at 5:21. ;) . Really made me smile.
Damn, I've been hoping to somehow run into one of these for years. I had no idea they were so rare. Great Find!
18:48 YOU REALLY HAD MY JAW DROPPED FOR A SEC 😂😂😂😂
The Hendrix songs you played sounded like John Cage's song 4'33'', hope you don't get copyright claimed by Cage.
hey man! this was a really cool video. would love to see if the parts of these guitars still exist. The slight offset of the strat body is very nice.
Awesome Trogly《☆》This one hits home with me since I have 3 Strats and an Epiphone Firebird VII and love Hendrix ☻
"Gibson focuses on originally"
18:43 im crying laughing! THATS the best thing ive heard in a so long!
Gotta love the irony of Gibso putting out a Strat copy after suing other guitar manufactures for the slightest similarities to Les Pauls/SGs/Flying Vs/Explorers, etc.
....actually I was thinking of the U-2, not the WRC. The WRC had a bolt-on neck. The U2 was going for the Jackson Soloist-type vibe.
Great, now I need a video on the SG 100 as well
The weirdest SG you'll ever play
Epic! Congratulations, Austin. Your close-up work was aces, too.
I was halfway into a huge smile when you acted like you were going to install the sonex neck. Bummer !!! Theat would have beeb great.
I’d love to see a dedicated Hendrix custom shop. Especially if they made a vintage style SG or Les paul. I mean it’s gibson they have to make a paul.
Well he did actually play a LPC, as well as the more famous SGC & V so....?
jimi hendrix was known for using matchsticks to jam the pickup selector into those middle positions... that three way switch was a bold choice
Sounds exactly like imagined it would: Something Jimi would never put his name on for love nor money...
Very rare guitar, I hope if someone buys it they take good care of it and don’t mess it up
It seems to have went to a very good home
Don't know why so many get upset about this guitar, it's a decent package for a fan. I'd never buy any instrument with another artist's name on it though, I prefer my instruments to be a blank slate for creating my own sound. Isn't that the whole point of being an artist?
So you wouldn't ever play a Les Paul? Seems kind of needlessly limiting.
Great! Been looking forward to this review! Thx Trogly.
It was not a well thought out idea, but, I would not want viewers to think that this China model was the idea Gibson was after, it's just the one that got away.
merman93 really like the idea of a hendrix superstrat setup with a steinberger trem ;) maybe headless too
Max Mustermann - That was the plan. Check out last 2 photos in this article gear-vault.com/gibson-hendrix-strat-people-are-pissed/
They had a few racks of the higher end units ready for paint. You can see it has a set neck, not a bold on, and routed for the Steinberger Transtrem, (which Gibson owns).
Remember to Play Authentic everyone
do you think this guy order's latte's at starbucks with this same voice?
@Spicy Chicken Marsala Cucumber Salad w/ Pico sounds disgusting.
It's like Ford Building a Dodge Challenger. Not for me!!
Reminds me of a buddy who wanted to be a biker so badly he slapped a load of Oriental bike parts together with Harley stickers and surface crap - we called it the " rice fed hog " lmao
Great video as usual!
You put so much effort into your content and it shows. I have really enjoyed your channl. I appreciate it dude!
Congrats on the Musicradar spread on this guitar! Awesome action!
I love how trogly got copyclaim because he was so good at portraying the song XD.
i sometimes hates guitarists, many of them are stuck in the past and isnt even born that time to experiencing it and everything post hendrix/stevie is soulless copycats and everything that isnt in a shape of a fender/gibson classic is weird to them. I called them pretentious at best
Sounds like you just talk to only guitarcenter players lol
This guitar pissed me off just as much as everyone else, however I still really wanted one solely for the reverse-angled bridge pickup. IMO, that's how all strats should be.
fender hendrix strat
Great guitar - should have been released - also at higher end. The reversed headstock seems logical and reverse skewed bridge pickup would respond to different harmonics.
Funny i woke up thinking what i there was a weird mix of gibson and a strat, then found this video and was pleased
Really enjoyed the video you did a great job. I will never understand why Leon Hendrix, didn’t get to run his Brothers estate.
Matthew I knew and fully understand that Matthew, but at the end of the day, Bloods thicker than water.
Huh ,.... you learn something new everyday !
5:21 bottom right
Trogly... Why?
Lol
surprisingly this isn't the first i've heard of the Gibson/Hendrix strat. now if i could only recall where i heard it first..
How can they "Copyright Claim" someone just playing a little part of a tune on a guitar? That's absurd.
As if "package" is misspelled on the box. Brilliant.
