The set symbol for Foundations immediately reminded me of the Starter 1999 symbol. Absolutely love this for the future of core sets

I was so surprised to hear it was a FANTASTIC DAY in the world of Magic: The Gathering that I had to rewind and hear it a second time just to be sure I heard that correctly. Here's hoping for more optimistic installments in the future!
There is an Archenemy variant that I play called 'Despicable Me' Basically, EVERYONE draws off the Archenemy deck. Things tend not to stick around very long.
The one thing about the shared life total for Archenemy is that I'm not sure 1 scheme per turn can balance the fact that the Bolas has only 1 deck with which to deal 60 damage, while the heroes have 3 decks to do 60 damage. Not being able to be eliminated is a monumental advantage in a format like that, and I'm thinking the Bolas will need more life to compensate.
Best bet would be give the Archenemy 120 and the 3 others share 120 or each have 40
@@Nephalem2002 The main issue is with both teams having the same amount of life, no matter what the actual number is.
They already increased the archenemy life total from 40 to 60, and I assume they've playtested it well enough to decide that the archenemy having 80 life was too much.
I do still think that this change (assuming the new scheme cards are of similar power to the old ones) will mean that the heroes are more likely to win than before.
I feel like Duskmourn’s art is very hit or miss. The monsters are great, but the Collected Company special guest feels Scooby-Doo ish

Interesting that Twitching Doll creates a token for "each counter" and not for "each _nest_ counter", I wonder if that was intentional.

@@dreamsalongthepath7377 only if your intending to misplay it on purpose. The card implies for each counter ON IT (aka the Nest Counters), not counters "elsewhere."
@@SirLANsalotwhat they're talking about is that +1/+1 counters also count towards the amount, as well as keyword counters and such.
I started a magic club at the high school I teach at. My LGS donated two boxes of Dominaria Jumpstart and I figure out real quick that the cards in that were far too complex for new players. And they advertise jumpstart as an intro product. Hopefully this new Foundation set actually feels like it’s made for new players

Azorius: Birds
Orzhov: Bats
Boros: Mice
Selesnya: Rabbits
Dimir: Rats (weird color pair)
Izzet: Otters
Simic: Frogs
Rakdos: Lizzards
Golgari: Squirrels
Gruul: Racoons
Given how prolific rats are, I think being part blue works. And their connection with sewers.

Since I was more comfortable with Magic, and my friends were worried that my Wurm deck's mana ramp made it better than their decks, they said they would all just play against me. They prevailed nicely and everyone had a great time. 😊
Twitching Doll's 2nd ability just says counters so load it up with whatever counters you want.

Twitching Doll also doesn't discriminate against what counters are on it. I'm gonna throw that in to my keyword counter deck.
Core Sets were a BIG part of the Old days, it made no sense to remove it.
They need to cut down 2 sets and bring in a Core set again.
This is the first time in a long time I've seen a positive video on this channel, and I've got to say, it's a huge breath of fresh air.
Wotc have tried many times to escape the "standard core set". With foundations, they might finally have found a solution.
Duskmourn is already bizarre. It has horrible, annoying references like Chainsaw, that make me roll my eyes even moreso than Thunder Junction, but then immediately next to it you have Twitching Doll, which is beautiful. Just proves I think how good WOTC can still be when they focus on their own creativity instead of pop culture.
Eh, I don't think it's a problem if they dip into the pop culture sometimes. Holy Cow, Bovine Intervention and the Coyote and Roadrunner cards were genuinely fun and everyone at the prerelease I was at loved them. At the same time I do think a set like Duskmourne could maybe drop the silly stuff and focus on being more serious. There's a time and a place for everything, the pop culture stuff can be enjoyable in moderation.

That Village cycle will go nicely in a devoid eldrazi deck, where you need both colored and colorless mana to cast your creatures.
That's exactly what I thought, that the same lands could be used to summon cute fluffy animals in Standard or Eldrazi monstrosities elsewhere, not many land cycles besides the painlands allow you to tap for colorless or a color so they should come in handy
With Convoke the creature you flash out The Wanderer to protect doesn't need to be tapped.

No No NO, if you cast a spell and "Cursed Recording" gets its 7nd counter that spell will resolve after you got the dmg, only if you copied it the copy can go first if you stack right.
Early Winter is a strictly worse version of Debt to the Kami.
Without Indestructible, Screaming Nemesis is no Stuffy Doll or Goblin Brawler guy. I think the energy spirit is possessing the dude though.
I think the Cursed Recording is a recording of Screaming Nemesis and that's why they are both screamy red energy guys popping out of TVs.
The Wanderer is from Kamigawa. So the idea of a ninja/Samurai lady showing up out of nowhere to chop a demon-thing into pieces is kind of an Anime trope in a lot of the shows I've seen.
Don't forget they had Sunglasses of Urza originally.

That was fun! I like the idea of having a type of "long-lived set" every few years that can serve as entry style. At least one set that won't have the usual power creep to sell.
I'm just at 2 30 in, and I've already missed so many opportunities to comment. I saw the Nine Lives Familiar and the Green White your dudes get +1 +1 cards yesterday, and.... It was like I knew before knowing. There is that feel. And it's back. You mentioned previously that Bloomburrow "Feels" like old magic, with the spells and potions and the slinging. ... Don't disagree, but I think we have confirmation with just those two Foundation cards alone. This is how Magic should feel, and I'm glad the feel is back. Flavor and Mechanics at half. I've already debated with friends and family if Nine Lives was a beginners trap ---- and how I can respect the set more, because IMHO I think it is. .... The care over the sets has returned. Dare I say, I think WOTC got the message, finally. The cards are "don't suck" to "not. bad" ... but the return / reaffirmation to """old""" [[Ok, Fifth / Tempest / Saga]] Magic feels is excellent. They've added the depth back.

I want Doomday Excurciator for my Labmaniac/Lab Jace deck. A 9 lives type of enchantment for cat based decks would be cool too. Also need a Leatherface Other Worlds card for the chainsaw XD. Cursed Recording get it to 6 then Harmless Offerings.
I love the Duskmourn spoilers so far! Chainsaw is gonna go good for one of my commander decks. And the rest of the cards are gonna be great! I might go hard into that set.
Then there’s also Bloomburrow and Foundations. My wallet is in danger.
ya Chainsaw could get pretty out of hand fast if you have ways to Proliferate multiple times and add extra counters when doing it. Could make your commander real big, real quick for a quick 21 damage to the face if its also a flyer to boot.
Im excited about commander archenemy. But like planechase its only fun if you use decks that actually swing creatures.
I just had an idea for a new way to play, Juggernaut. combination of monarch and archenemy. game starts as normal. when someone deals combat damage to a player they get they become the juggernaut. They get the monarch and gain control of the archenemy deck. If another player deals combat damage to the juggernaut they gain control of them.
Dang, the one deck that shuts down my red deck is lifegain. Now there's nothing to stop me from world domination.

Doesn't matter anymore what cards they make, the reprinted cards are out of control and they are greedy as f. I'm all in on sorcery contested realm and it's amazing. I kept my commander decks to play but nope, not giving them a penny.
Yeah, I've been playing Magic since 1996/1997, but have moved onto Sorcery Contested Realm as well. The only MTG I play anymore is Old School 93/94 and Premodern. I stopped buying new Magic cards when Strixhaven was released.

Screaming nemesis isn't a new effect. Stigma lasher from Eventide does the same thing with can't gain life.

Archenemy always ended up poorly for our group. Even using low level decks, the archenemy was destroyed, and quickly. The schemes weren't strong enough.

Excruciator and Altar of Dementia = decking your opponents. I think K’rrk decks will be playing this, since they can spend their life to cast k’rrk, tutor for Excruciator, cast it for 12 life, and put the whole table in panic mode.

They STUFFED so much card previews down our throat today. Real whiplash from cutesy village lands to twitching doll made of spiders.
Not to mention the fundamentals that just Magic Core Set, but long term. Can’t even push the power that much for the new cards as if they plan on having them around for 5 years in standard, you can’t accidentally give yourself a black eye by having to ban a card from it.

19:35 i HATE effects that make you so you can't do a certain thing "for the rest of that game." Imagine you built a deck based around life gain, and someone's like "My Screaming Nemesis is going to do one damage to your face" now the thing your deck was built to do just doesn't work. Such cards should be banned. Imagine if WotC printed a version of Blood Moon but "Oh, if thing X happens and targets you for Y your nonbasic lands are mountains FOR THE REST OF THE GAME" imagine your playing a five color deck and that's literally your mana base! Same concept just obliviously gaining life isn't something most decks do but WHEN THEY DO it's one thing if there's a creature on field that prevents life gain, because then you only have to remove the permanent. But a "Rest of the game" effect? may as well just exile the top twenty cards of my library because i'd at least be able to play the game.

I don't get Hasbro. Their disdain for new players is a problem. Foundation is a good move. I've played since 94 and absolutely love the game. I don't really have the time or money to play nowadays but I still follow it and collect it what I can. Can't wait for Hasbro to fail and sell wotc to (prayers) a company that can shepherd it well into the future.

It's flavor text. It's fine. If the flavor elements of the card can't be gendered, then every single character in art would have to be like Gonti/Yahenni, Niko Ares, or Ashiok. Whether pictorial or textual, flavor elements needn't be held to rigid standardization as such.

After 28 or 29 years of playing this game I stopped giving the money back when Strixhaven was released. I've moved on to Sorcery Contested Realm and the only Magic I play anymore is Old School 93/94 and Premodern
