      Hey Alison! Thank you for all of your lessons. I was wondering though if you could do a video on violin octaves? I got myself a fiddlerman violin and it was close to all the correct notes (E,A,D, and G) on my tuner, but it was almost a week of playing open strings before I realized I was in the wrong octave for every string. There is very little out there on the importance and "how to" for tuning in the correct octave. Thank you!

    I've been playing music since I was 8 and I've always wanted a violin but didn't think I could afford lessons. But I just got one (now that I'm 32) and found your channel, thanks so much you have the most helpful and informative channel I've found. Would have never got mine tuned if it wasn't for you. Being as I've always played guitar and bass and cheap ones at that I've never messed with fine tuners but thanks to you I know what's up.

      Hello, I have a question. My violin teacher was telling me that after tuning the A, E is tuned next, so you start playing A and E together. I thought she was mistaken as I only saw D getting tuned as second. So I searched for a reference and the reasoning behind that. The only thing I found was a forum comment saying that A and D are tuned first, because they are n the middle of the bridge and tuning E as second might cause some problems. However, they also said that Viola tunes D after A, hence the two uppermost strings, so this can't be the reason.
      Can you give me some information about why are strings on the violin are tuned in that order and if there are places or times where it is done differently?

      You could also push them in after you've put them the way you want them, push in and they won't move. But not too much or you'll break the pegs. And when u want to move them again just pull the out a tiny bit. NOT TOO MUCH. My DAD was helping me cause he plays the guitar and he tightened the E string to much and I went to play Carol of the Bells and when I bowed the E string snapped back at my face and now I have a large welt on my face from my eyebrow down to where my nostril lined up with my cheak

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
    @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 12 lety

    yes, it should do. I dont use a shoulder rest or anything at all for that matter as you can probably tell, but i do lift my shoulder up and bring my chin down a little so they 'grip' the violin. The shoulder rest, just eliminates this so you dont have the raise your left shoulder slightly and grip with your chin and shoulder. That actually sounds worse than it is...but its not....It all depends really on the amount of space you have between your shoulder and chin as its different for everyone...

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
    @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 12 lety

    With the bow moving around problem when you are not looking at it, you could try splitting an A4 piece of paper in half and rolling it up (like a cigarette) so you will have 2 in total and placing them (CAREFULLY) into the circle part of the 2 'f' holes either side of the bridge. Put them in the top of the f holes, not bottom......

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
    @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 10 lety +2

    it means the notes are a 5th apart like the violin strings. So the G string to the D string is what we call an open 5th as G,A,B,C,D are 5 notes away. Does that make sense?

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
    @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 11 lety

    Hi, yes there is - you can use it to stop the peg slipping and make them easier to tune, but I wouldnt use pegs as a general rule unless you have a professional violin which is made for tuning with the pegs and has been set up as such. I would use the fine tuners except if the violin is really out of tune and the fine tuners wont cut it. I would leave the violin as it is when you put it to bed. Dont let the tension go or you will be ruining the strings. Hope that helps :)

    well either take it to your local music shop and the friendly staff there may help you tune it, or as you turn the pegs, GENTLY push them inwards as you turn and they should stay. Gently does it though and dont turn fast - take your time or you will snap the string or tilt the bridge so just keep an eye on the bridge also and make sure it stands straight.

    well loosen off the fine tuners a little so that you 'reset' them so to speak so you have room for manoeuvre. Dont have them too tight or loose, just in the middle. You cant really have too much string around the peg as thats pretty much standard. I find with students violins that they slip a lot when i tuning them so i use the pegs to tune them properly then just stick with the fine tuners from then on.

    you need to just gently push the peg inwards as you tune, but GENTLY though as you will do damage. If not, peg grip or soap (the bar variety) rubbed over the peg to help it keep in place, but only a little and dry NOT wet.

    I tried to tune my new violin for the first time 2 days ago, and when I turned the pegs, they suddenly loosened and the strings became too loose, now matter how hard I tried to turn them to make the strings taught again, they keep springing back the opposite way, then when I tried again, the bottom G-string broke.
    I thought maybe I was tuning the wrong way, as I was presumed to turn the pegs the same way that I turn the machine heads on a guitar. I checked CZcams tonight, and all the videos said to turn the pegs, which is what I did, but yours is the first video that I found, that explains to tune at the bottom of the bridge and not with the pegs, and you said exactly what happened to my violin when you try to tune with the pegs on a cheap violin. The string snapped.
    Thank you so much for explaining that. I regret that I didn't look for your video before trying to tune it by myself (^_^;)
    Thank you for your explanation.

    you are right,i wouldnt bother if it didnt work BUT it only works to an extent which i think you realise anyway. You can follow me and copy what i do, but the only thing you will miss from a teacher is lesson guidance as to what you play/practice and when to move on etc and also to tell you what you are doing wrong. It can be done even without a teacher but totally depends on what level you want to get to. If you want exams for example, you need a teacher. if you want fun, then videos will work.

    .......Push the paper in until you they hit the floor of the violin and they should stand up and not droop over. Then, you need to put the bow infront of them and it will stop you bowing onto the finger board. So you will have in this order: the bridge, your bow, the paper poles, then the fingerboard. Does that make sense?

I listened to the video and tuned my top string like hers and was easily able to lock onto the correct note. Turns out, I was 1 maybe 2 octaves low! Someone my sis knows lent me a cheap violin, and what you said about the cheap pegs is so true, I noticed they are made out of some cheap wood and dyed black, and they're a bit oval (don't know if they're supposed to be like that, though).
    I already ended up snapping the E string, luckily it was the cheap string it came with, but I just bought a slightly beter string set. And I don't have any finetuners, the original tailpiece had them, but had a crack and simply broke when I was tuning it.
    Will probably upgrade the pegs later on.

    Hi Alison, I had my Dominant strings from your video on how to pimp your cheap violin put on at a local music shop. I also bought one of those little electric tuners. In the shop I met two old friends before I had a chance to play it and I was assured my violin was in tune. It sounded good at home but I didn't tune it. When I took it out to practise again it was all over the shop. I can now get the D and A strings to play nicely; G was fine, started to play up and is now giving me just as much grief as the E string which I really can't bare to think about. The fine tuners on G and E are right down, G I can only get to D sharp and E is currently on F sharp but its taken me this whole morning to get it there, and I know it is likely my inexperience but I keep thinking that the man said he had altered my bridge slightly. I can't move the E and G fine tuners any further and I hear what you say about the pegs Alison. Anything else at all I can do? Thanks in advance. I'm developing a fear of music shops.

      Christine Gage Alison, I managed it! It's taken me an age to do and my left shoulder aches (but it spent a year in physio and had cortisone pumped into it), my bowing has improved hugely and I think my ear has. I'm just really chuffed that I achieved it. Practise today was the MASSIVE task of re-tuning my violin which has taken all morning. Going out to get heat rub for shoulder! :-)

    its actually a very very good question!!
    Well i guess if you have NO access whatsoever to a piano, or tuner or anything at all, then you will be able to tell if you play all 4 strings as you get to know the sound of the open strings and so when they are off, or not in tune, you will probably know as something wont sound right. Does that make sense? You will probably be able to tell as the sound of the 4 strings wont sound like they usually do....Alison

    Thanks for the Yanks tuning tip. As a guitarist, its a common thing to maximum yank of the strings. And again, you have beautiful blue sky eyes

    I believe so. I used 196Hz for G3, 293.7Hz for D4, 440Hz for A4 and 659.3Hz for E5. I guess I don't really have much to gauge what is loose and what is tight at this stage, I might need to show it to someone who does. I do know that the G3 feels much tighter and sounds much better than the other three.

    depends which G. The G higher or the G lower. Just turn the tuner until it gets closer to the note you need. Sorry cant help any more than that without actually doing it myself.

    its possible the tape has slightly moved as believe it or not it happens all the time especially if the tape has been there a while as your fingers get hot and sweaty they melt the glue and move it slightly - having said all that, im not keen on tuners as, as good and hand as they are, i never quite find them totally accurate - to my ear at least...

  • @oakenguitar3
    @oakenguitar3 Před 11 lety

    well all the finger patterns are the same but the notes will be different and just slightly spaced out more i think. any song I play will just be transposed a whole step down kinda like transposing on guitar using a capo. I don't think any harmonics or overtones are lost tho cuz its a string and will have harmonics regardless of what note its tuned to. my concern was about the bridge and sound post since the tension of the strings is what keeps them in the right place. thanks!!! :)

    I cant remember the price in dollars im afraid as im in the UK.

    help, i decided to tap into my musical interest which include a piano and violin, you are teaching very well. Covid 19 has me stuck in the house but i am trying to follow everything i must do to keep from tightening up the strings too tight. Luckily for me I have a beginner , student violin by Easter. I will continue to follow your other tutorials

    My violin scratching went away and also my g string was extremely loose for some reason. I think my violin still needs more tuning, but for now as a beginner it sounds much better.

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
    @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 11 lety

    you just tune the violin to the correct notes? Im not sure i fully understand what you are saying as you cant just tighten the strings however you like as they must be tuned to the correct notes. Hope that makes sense

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
    @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 12 lety

    Sorry, im not sure entirely what you mean? Do you mean how much are the fine tuners to buy? They are only a few pounds to buy.

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
    @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 12 lety

    It should be fine and i assume that even with a 20% loss as you say, its probably un-noticeable to the ear. If you have fine tuners, then you could use them, but as long as the violin is not hideously out of tune which can be very detrimental to your playing as you will have to re-position your fingers etc, then all should be well.

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
    @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 11 lety

    the same as you tune a regular one. An electric violin is the same, except you need an amp to hear it. You use a regular bow on them too.

  • @Jeanjellybean13
    @Jeanjellybean13 Před 9 lety

    That explains it. I tried tuning my violin the way I tune my guitar and uke. I was wondering why the strings were not tightening or loosening as well

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor

    you can use some dry soap (those bars of soap) just rub it on and it should do the trick. No need to buy anything other than soap for less than a dollar - well hopefully as you can buy soap for about 50p here!
