When I first saw Askelad I thought he was gonna be a throwaway villain for Thors but he turned out to probably be the best character of the entire season
I knew from the start as he was illustrated way too detailed to be an "NPC" :D
yeah same thought he was gonna be some generic villian to powerscale the MC type of cliche
so glad this played for the Valhalla scene when Thorfinn cried.

Cuz Askeladd says: This is the shitty place where every warrior ends up in and everyone is an enemy here.
It also goes well with the theme of the story that something like Valhalla which is glorified so much is nothing but a Dark and gloomy place of never ending fight.
For those of you unaware, the Vinland Saga OST is made by Yutaka Yamada, the genius also behind the Toyko Ghoul OST.

@@Knullified60 because at the end of the soundtrack on iTunes, the openings and endings are put on the album. the ops and eds are not made by Yamada, so thus various artists. The background music itself is all made by Yamada.
Vinland Saga is such a work of art. At the start I hated Askeladd, because he killed Thors and turned Thorfinn's revenage into his tool, my anger came to a boiling point when I saw him raid that village killing that girl with the wedding ring's parents and everyone else. But when I saw his backstory of how he killed his father for abandoing his mother and his speech about how much he hates the vikings he leads, and how he would lay down anything to protect his homeland, and when he revelead his real name, I knew this was a great character and hoped that he would somehow survive.

this is most definitely in the top 10 anime osts of all time.

this song moves me to tears every time I hear it... it brings about a sense that we are all surrounded by darkness, yet there's a glimmer of light that we can always grow closer to. our current sorrows do not define the rest of our eternity. (at least, that's how this song makes me feel)

This series is so damn good (just started s2) and Askeladd is one of the best-written characters in any media, period. Once I catch up to the end of the season I'm definitely reading the manga. This has quickly moved into my top 10 favorite animes.

Vinland saga is so misunderstood and underrated anime. Even the music is masterpiece
had this playing while i read thru the farm arc in the maga and whoo the end of the arc hit alot harder than normal .
I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS!!! When I first heard this during the scene where Thorfinn was atoning for his sins he committed, and the fact you could see the pain in his eyes that he truly was sorry for the horrible things he has done it really made tears come out of my eyes. seeing him cry as he saw the souls of the innocent people he killed as he was filled with regret. yet Askelad told him to go far and beyond the world thors went, that he is the son of thors, and that is his real fight to become a true warrior. that scene was so powerful that it pulled my heart strings. Thorfinn realizing he has no enemies and that there is more to life than meaningless war and slaughter.

Askeladd. Man i miss you ..
Askeladd sought someone capable of transforming the harsh world for the better. He found that in Thors, but was compelled to kill him. Therefore, he pinned his hopes on Thorfinn, son of Thors. However, he had to sacrifice himself to liberate Thorfinn, letting him follow his own path to somewhere else.
Lmao nooooo. Artorius that Askeladd thought was a king who'd end wars. In Thorfinn, Askeladd saw himself. And in the end it is significant that once he learns of Thorfinn's heritage, he doesn't use it, like he did with Canute. No, what he wanted for Thorfinn was for him to liberate himself and live his life in peace. Askeladd sacrificed himself to put Canute on the throne. For Thorfinn, in his last words, he wished for him to leave the battlefield. Because Canute for him was a chess piece, but Thorfinn by that point became his son. Hence why he used Canute and liberated Thorfinn.
@@valeriewinter6217 Pretty good take I completely agree with you and I might only add that I believe Canute was not just a chess piece Askelaad, I believe he truly saw some hope in Camute a hope that he had long since suppressed deep inside of him for a better future, one where no one has to endure what he endured, where people can live out their days in peace and never know war or bloodshed. The point that he sees himself in Thorfinn is a deep one too as although a part of him wanted to extend the hand to Thorfinn that he never recieved himself , he probably realised that it would be best for Thorfinn to find the answer for himself and finally leave the battlefield, a choice he wished he had.

@Master_K14 I respectfully disagree and you misunderstood me. Yes, he saw hope in Canute, *hence* he used him. Askeladd was very smart and could 100% predict what a life would someone trying to end wars in that age would live, what sacrifices a potential Artorius would have to make, all the hateful things he'd have to do in the name of peace. He completely could predict that to give peace to his people, an Artorius would himself have no peace anymore. In the end, he liberates Thorfinn from the life of politics and wars (although Thorfinn would have definitely been *very* useful to Canute - both in skills and as a potential political piece to be used by Canute, given his heritage - you'd expect Askeladd to encourage Thorfinn to help Canute, but *no* - during his last moments he doesn't even spare a thought to his supposed lifelong dream. All his attention is on the boy that world of theirs turned into a replica of Askeladd, all Askeladd is thinking in his last moments is "whatever will this boy do now that I am gone?" and uses his last breaths to *liberate* that boy and send him on. At the same time, Canute, by Askeladd's scheme, basically became a slave of fate - he will never know peace now, all his life he will spent warring and politicking to ensure lasting peace, a servant to his people - and Askeladd knew that, i.e. he used Canute to ensure his own dream comes true
I see, yes it seems i may have misinterpreted what you have meant, if I am understanding you correctly then do you mean to say that Camut does not hold much sentimental value to Askeladd? atleast not as much as Thorinn? So in other words Camut is just a means to an end for Askeladd, his final move towards his goal of achieving peace even if he may not live to see it himself. In that sense would it be fair to say he left his dreams in the hands of Canute?
Once again feel free add on or disagree with what ive said it has been a while since I last watched Vinland Saga
But back to what I was saying. I personally feel like although it is an undisputable fact that he used Canute to make his dreams possible, I believe the very act of leaving your dreams in someone else's hands to be an act which holds deeper sentimental value towards that person than them simply being a "chess piece" so to speak, as according to my understanding chess pieces are moved around and used with no feelings held to any particular piece as they are all disposable towards the end of winning the game, however in Askeladd's case if i recall correctly chose to entrust the future with Canute and his dreams with him as well. Let us leave Thorfinn's value to to Askeladd aside for now.
With what I have just mentioned I believe Canute holds more value to Askeladd than simply being reduced to a mere pawn or disposable piece. If that were the case there would be no need to sacrifice his own life to ensure the life of Canute. Askeladd is a very smart individual but he is human as well, I believe there was a part inside of him that wanted to believe in the future that Canute may bring, enough to make him sacrifice his own life to that end atleast.
Anyway once again feel free to add or disagree, despite my poor English i do enjoy engaging in discussions like this.

I read the manga while listening to this and I cried like a freaking baby when Hild forgives Thorfinn, easily one of the most beautiful and wholesome moments in manga.
bro i did to, it was an amazing moment, but you reeeeally shouldn't put it in a comment like this without a spoiler, it's basically the culmination of all of Thorfinn's journey, and to have it spoiled like this is a pretty bad feeling, for those who don't know it... @@corey552 my thought is, you can become a true warrior in your own domain, considering how you start is always unique. There is really no true definition to what a true warrior is in fact. They're just elevating themselves on their own, with their own past, success or failure. Everything else is really secondary. In a fairytale, you remember how a character was, fought and in what he or she believed, not how he was put in a plot by the author. Otherwise, the author didn't really manage to inspire you. Child got freedom reading stories, they're true readers.

He’s a pos but he’s an extremely well written character & in some ways, is a necessary pos in Thorfinns character development. It was never personal, but he actually felt sorry for thorfinn, probably saw himself in him.
