      Solitary confinement happens after you’ve done something really bad. And typically, something really bad in prison.

    • @michaelesposito2629
      @michaelesposito2629 Před 4 lety +15

      Matthew Tyson sure, but let’s not pretend it happens often at all. Might as well imagine you won the lottery. Twice. Probably better odds than you being sent to prison while innocent, AND also sent to long term solitary confinement , for doing nothing

    • @GrifoStelle
      @GrifoStelle Před 4 lety +5

      @Matthew Tyson yes. Extremely rare nearly non-existant cases, thankfully.

    • @STCatchMeTRACjRo
      @STCatchMeTRACjRo Před 4 lety +26

      @@GrifoStelle Rare, however when you take in count the prison population ~2.2 million people, even 1% is alot.
      The Innocence Project estimates that between 2-5% are innocent, locked away in jail&prison for crimes they did not committed.
      So lets say 3% are innocent, that means ~66000 from 2.2 million.
      You can only have cases if proven they innocent.
      Imagine if in a year that ~66000 are proven to be innocent. How many cases we would have were innocent ones were locked up in solitary confinement?
      The fact is it takes time to prove somebody is innocent once they got a guilty verdict. The justice system does not want to waste money, so unless some prof is brought to them that maybe the person is innocent after all, they wont re-open the case. And some of those innocent ones will die in prison do to complication, old age or assaulted. Or they commit a crime in order to survive or for other reason, making it even more difficult to get approved to re-open their case.

      stove_boi there are many shades of introversion. Introverts still enjoy calming one on one interactions. The problem is when there are many people involved. And even extroverts need the occasional solitude to replenish their energy. There’s also people like me, that have trouble around people, and lose energy, but mainly because of the effort it takes for me to remain normal and not be judged. I believe a lot of “introverts” are not, and just have social anxiety, which drains their energy. When I wasn’t socially anxious, or when I’m around people I trust, my energy gets replenished. When I’m around people I don’t fully trust, my energy is drained. I believe that a large portion of introverts, aren’t introverts, or at least, aren’t at the complete opposite end of the spectrum. They are just shy people with social anxiety. Now If you don’t have social anxiety, AND you’re still drained by people, you’re an introvert.

    This is incredibly insightful. I wonder how similar this is to emotional confinement meaning people who aren't jailed but have little emotional contact with anyone. People who only interact at a superficial or transactional level for years on end. I would like to read opinions if anyone has any.

    The thing is, no one should have to survive something like this anyway. It is the epitome of cruel and unusual punishment. After hearing firsthand experiences about solitary confinement, it’s too inhumane to be something that should be allowed in any system. I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. And the metaphor at the beginning isn’t a good one, since in solitary, you have nothing but concrete walls.

      As an introvert who has spent time in the hole, I can tell you that is horrible and absolutely terrifying. No matter how antisocial you are or how lonely you're feeling, it will never compared to being stuck in a jail cell all by yourself. The feeling was horrible for me and every time I closed my eyes I couldn't help but thinking about home, like it was all a bad dream, which made me feel even worse. I only spent a few days there so I made it out ok but anything more than that would probably have driven me insane.

    After doing a decade in prison and nearly 24 months of that (one 18month straight bit) in the hole I have to say this video might apply to maybe generously 5% of those who do time. Post release issues are far more complex and far more subtle. Institutionalization is real but for the non convict it’s easily overcome. And doing time in the hole ain’t that bad as it’s nice to take a break from the ignorance, drama and gangs periodically and catch up on your reading.

    Ok I need to say this solitary isn’t just for prison. I was in a boarding school where I was put in solitary for six months. My parents and I would ask one another a question every week things like what is happiness to you? Well I got a two page letter in return one week, that all but two sentences censored. “Besides that I guess we’re ok. We look forward to hearing from you soon. - mom and dad” I was reasonably upset but ok besides that. Censored letters was a normal thing. I never had one but I guess it was about time. So that Sunday I wrote them my letter. Said that I was sorry but my letter got censored so I can’t answer their question if they asked me one. The next letter I got back was them calling me a liar that my letter wasn’t blacked out, and saying I was ungrateful, that I was rude and insensitive. I didn’t know what I did. So I broke down and was crying before bedtime. My family rep asked me if I wanted to talk. I said no. A few minutes after shutdown my family rep and two large men came into my dorm. The men grabbed me and drug me into oss. I didn’t break any rules! I was crying , anyone would if their parents called you a liar when you were telling the truth, I was helpless, frustrated, but still knew better then breaking any rules. The only reason I know I was In there for six months is because I’m a female, and mother nature’s clock wouldn’t let me loose time. Over time I stopped talking to my parents and days turned into weeks then into months then years and years turned into a decade. Oss broke me.
    I didn’t know what was in that letter until last summer. My mom was diagnosed with cancer. My parents asked me if I wanted to come home to spend time with them, in case mom didn’t make it. The school censored my mom telling me she had cancer. I didn’t survive oss. My brain is broken. All because a school didn’t like the idea that I could have hope of going home before they said it was ok. I lost time with my family because they played mind games.

    While in the Army I found out my wife was cheating on me. I told my Squad Leader about it. told him I was very depressed, could barely process it. He asked if I felt like hurting myself. I answered honestly and said yeah a little bit. They put me on "suicide Watch" immediately. Which to my command meant being locked in a broom closet next to the CQ desk with some MREs over the 4 day weekend until Behavior Health opened up. They took my phone to "Help" me process and not go crazy from texting my wife for answers to questions they felt I didn't need the answers to right now. It was by far the most traumatic week of my life. needless to say I didn't re enlist and ended my 9 year career instead of doing 20 like I planned. Now I have mental health check ups every 2 weeks with the VA and 70% disabled. partly my back but partly my Mental health. Solitary is no joke, especially when it is unjust, by people you trusted, while processing so much. And that was just 4 days.

  • @stevensstones
    @stevensstones Před 4 lety +1

    Here's a twist: I spent 19 months of a 4 year sentence in AdSeg for a riot I didn't even participate in. Tbh, it's not that bad if you're ok with being alone. You can always talk to your neighbors either thru the door or thru the vents above your shower/toilet so you're not completely isolated. You get better food back there (the "high tech" or "solitary" part of the prison is usually in the back of the regular prison so we just called it "in the back") so you eat better. My time went pretty easily alone.

    solitairy is so traumatic and horrible, but we understand why it needs to be done. however, in other places, i read that solitairy rules are much more slacked than in the us. like in russia, they have break rooms. bad crimes, but we need to cut some slack and not make all these people go crazy.
