INTENSE Sling Bag Showdown TomToc vs. Alpaka

- After carrying the TomToc Compact EDC sling for the last year or so, I decided to switch to the Alpaka Vertical Sling as my edc. For me, the Alpaka is the better option for everyday carry given its vertical layout. I especially like that it makes full use of the pocket clips on my pen, flashlight, and multi-tool. Additionally, the fact that this can hold my iPad Mini AND a portable keyboard, is a homerun.

I did order the same Tomtoc that you had and it did the exact same thing shifted to my left side 👍.
Wish the strap was a bit longer, seems like an easy fix
I just ordered an alpaca Bravo Mini sling pack .... Can't wait to get it 👍👍
Happy to hear, Dan. Let me know how it goes!
I am a carry everything and the kitchen sink - so I appreciate you wanting to get everything in. However, watching you load the bag, I noticed that if you place the long cords down inside the main pouch, there is open space (by the way the bag sit when you open it up- you can see the it wrinkle into the open space-if that makes sense). My bags are all packed the way yours is - snug with everything I want in there. Lol
Will check for that open space, glad to hear there are other folks out there carrying everything all the time as well :)
Hi there, for the tomtoc bag, even if you tighten up the strap, does the bag still going side way like you mentioned? I'm a big guy as well
Never really tried to get it super tight, didn’t want to feel constricted. For what it’s worth the new sling also moves around on me more than I’d like. May be in the market for something new once again
I got the tomtoc sling like yours but in medium size. My regular ipad fits. Plus, the larger sling looks better for bigger guys like us.
Right on! I’m debating a new edc backpack, will checkout the bigger tomtoc, currently thinking a vanquest is best. I also picked up the alpaka flight sling that I’ll be reviewing soon.
Hi! Great review. Was just wondering if you considered the Alpaka Metro Sling? I'm trying to choose between the two, Vertical or Metro.
I have not. In reviewing the metro sling on their website it looks to be .1 liter smaller than the vertical sling. For me the vertical sling is just barely big enough to hold all I want (and in truth I’d love if it were maybe .2 liters bigger). For that reason I personally would pass on the metro sling, but it will come down to what you’re hoping to put in the pack. If I was willing to move on from carrying the iPad keyboard, the metro may be appropriate. Let me know what you end up choosing!
Thanks for your reply! :) I'm looking for a bag that's not too big but can fit my phone, keys, Fuji X100V and/or Ricoh GR3 (if both would fit, perfect!) plus extra batteries. Maybe sunglasses too? Right now I'm using a Moment Fanny Sling that can "sort of" fit all those and I'm currently on the hunt for a bag that could do better.
The Alpaka is about 10% bigger in terms of volume, than your current fanny. In trying to visualize how you would have both cameras in there, I think you can do it (have them offset and then make use of the empty space for batteries). That being said, you might be really happy with the TomToc, if you're okay with a horizontal sling.
I ordered a black Tomtoc 4L and I'm liking it so far. Thanks!
Happy to hear!
You’re tryin* to fit tomtoc 4.5 liter bag into a 2.2 bag n I’ve had both n kept the alpaca because the strap is about 8 inches longer and is vertical and sling carry or shoulder carry n im a big guy too
Sounds like we landed on a similar solution, for similar reasons! Re: the capacity, no doubt about it, the Alpaka is smaller and i'm probably trying too hard to stuff it full of gear. So far tho, I haven't minded, and as tight as everything is i'm still able to pull out tools with ease.
Thank you
You need the alpaka bravo sling
Might be switching to more of a backpack. Undecided. I picked up the alpaka travel sling and used it on my honeymoon. Will be making a video about that soon. Will checkout the bravo sling
Wow…that Alpaka has too much stuff in it. Try a Vanquest Dendrite. Or a backpack
Agreed! I haven’t carried the keyboard much since the video, so it’s less full that I first anticipated it would be. Will checkout the Dendrite nonetheless!
You got the wrong alpaka
Which one should I have gotten??
Dude just get a backpack.
I have one for traveling, but still carry a sling bag everyday. Love having my tools, iPad, wallet, keys, and other items without having to put anything in my pockets
Bro needs DORA THE EXPLORER BACKPACK for when he gets his monkey !
🤔
Strange how I'm literally debating between these 2 slings... 😂
😅 Can't really go wrong with either. Ideally the Alpaka would be 10% bigger and then it'd be my home run. I don't miss any of the stuff I took out of the TomToc, though I also haven't used the iPad a ton (I think 2x) since I added it to my EDC. LMK what you decide!
@@HeyDerFolks any idea if you could fit a small drone in any of the slings? I have a mini 3 and was hoping it fitted
I've got a Mini 2 (can't speak for the 3) and this is what I found regarding it + the controller
- Fits in the TomToc with ease. I was also able to close the tomtoc with the drone + flashlight, multitool, screwdriver, and pen (all from this video). Its a little tight, but doable
- Fits in the Alpaka and will close (tightly), but you can't put anything else in the pack if you go this route.
@@HeyDerFolks appreciate it bro, I think I'm gonna go with the tomtoc
