  • Working out the kinks of a boat that's been sitting on the trailer for 20 years and not started in the last 10. It's a 60hp Izuzu C240 which is stamped QD60 on the engine. The Boat is a 1985 Outer Reef 26 trawler. Hopefully this video will show some of the common problems and fixes in restoring an old diesel trawler. This video shows the procedure for bleeding the fuel system and hydraulic steering system.

    I am so glad there is some one working on a trawler. I get tired watching sailboat repair. Keep the videos coming.

      Lucky for you there's a lot of work yet to be done! Next steps are making it overnight camp friendly.

    Super cool that its trailerable. Thats going to be a cool little boat when done. Glad to see another Trawler rehab channel.

      Thanks. I saw your channel has garden tractor and trawler videos too! Not sure how many fit in that venn diagram but makes sense to me.

    Very similar to my project here in northern BC. Happy to share experiences with you. I've been working on the interior for the last three months or so. Just tarping her up for the winter and preparing to clean up my Isuzu also. It ran when I pulled it out of the water quite nicely.

    Key may turn backwards for glow plugs. that round hole on the dash should be a glow plug indicator.

      @@stevenmurphree thats how it works on our old 70s bulldozer. Turn key backwards and hold until the indicator warms up.

      @@bretwilson5197 i tried backwards key yesterday and it worked perfect. Started for it first time since winter on the first short crank. No more manual jumping it!

    The hand pump is for bleeding air out of system either you have an air leak or weak lift (low pressure) fuel pump.

    Turn key to LEFT 30 seconds to heat glow plugs, then right to start.

    Those Isuzu C240 engines were/are pretty bulletproof. They were fitted to Isuzu Trooper 4WD vehicles and light trucks over here in NZ and I dont think I ever saw an engine failure. Injectors, glowplugs and dirty fuel were the biggest issues.

    • @stevenmurphree
      @stevenmurphree  Před 2 lety

      Yeah so far it's been a straightforward project with learning the sequence it likes to have the fuel system bled as the largest hurdle. This one only has 650 hours so hopefully lots of life left.

    • @matui6983
      @matui6983 Před 2 lety

      The lift pump mounted onto the injector pump is a high pressure unit. The handpriner that you unscrew then pump to bleed the system with then screw shut again needs replacing. I do pumps injectors for a living and we throw the screw type away and fit the Bosch type that you dont do anything except just pump them. There should be a pressure relief valve in the filter housing that when you pump the primer and reach the correct pressure will open making a buzzing noise.
      Glowplugs should be powered for up to 20seconds. Also notice next to the gearbox that theres a disconnected oil cooler maybe?

      I have a C223T I am about to rebuild and convert to marine application.

    • @matui6983
      @matui6983 Před 2 lety

      The whole Isuzu range of smaller vehicle engines up until they went away from mechanical injection made great marine engines. Solid dependable, no alloy heads. Used to see 100's of C223's and C240's...now not so much. Still see the odd marine unit.

      @@matui6983 Woah lot of good information! I have wondered if the hand primer is faulty or has a bad check valve. I can hear the fuel system start to bypass into the return after a few pumps but I thought it was on the lower pressure side? Can you reply with a link for the Bosch replacement? The trans had a line taped over and plugged by maybe there could be a trans cooler installed? There does not appear to be one anywhere in the boat for the 650 hours used so far.

  • @captlarry-3525
    @captlarry-3525 Před 10 měsíci

    If you would clean the boat, engine and bilges, any leaks will be immediately apparent, and you won't get crap in the guts of engine, steering, trans, and etc.

    Wow, the outside cleared up really well. Did you paint it or just power wash it?

    • @stevenmurphree
      @stevenmurphree  Před 2 lety +1

      I did wash it but did not power wash it to preserve the gel coat. There are some areas that will need painting but yes, it does look much better now.
