  • Putting the 1985 Outer Reef 26 in the water for the first time in 20 years! After spending 2.5 months cleaning up the boat and getting the fuel system reliable the hard work paid off. The boat has an Izuzu C240 60hp engine and we did some speed and function testing on this day.
    Check my other videos for initial boat condition, work done to the boat, and eventually how it's getting used.

      Fun story. Found a twin to this boat in Guntersville, Alabama that was trailered from AL to WA and then made it to Alaska by water. That would be an incredible trip!

      @@stevenmurphree . Last, last summer, 2021, I bought a 32 ft sailboat and went to Alaska on it. I didn't even have boating experience, let alone sailing. LOL. No real issues though. Amyway, next time I'll do it on sometype of trawler.

  • @mvintrigue-trawlerdiy1101

    LOL...typical shakedown run. Bumpers hanging off, shafts dripping, bunks falling off, ladders dragging and about ten thousand things to check. I know exactly how that feels. But it looks to me like a big success overall. Its only up from here brother. Thats a super cool little boat especially since its on a trailer. I noticed you have a TinyTach in addition to the other tach thats not working. Is the Tiny Tach working? I was thinking about getting one it takes pulses from a piexo electric sensor that goes around the high pressure fuel lines before the injector. It senses the small pulse/expansion in the line and generates a signal. The other tach usually take a signal off the alternator. And if the alternator is not putting out you wont have a tach signal. In addition if your batteries are topped off and the alternator output falls to nearly nothing...again tach signal dies or gets erratic. Good luck with your project and I look forward to seeing more.

    • @stevenmurphree
      @stevenmurphree  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks! Tiny tach nor main tach work. Output voltage is very high like 15-16v so I'm wondering if the alternator reguator has failed.

    • @EricUdell
      @EricUdell Před 2 lety +1

      I would second checking the alternator to solve your main tach issue ( I know nothing about the tiny tach ). The alternator on our single 135 Lehman drives the tach and when the alternator has had issues ( like me forgetting to hook up a controller wire after a battery upgrade ) we've had no tach. It also happens when the batteries are full and there's nearly no load on the alternator. I think the regulator is shutting it completely off and the tach quits until it starts again, because the battery voltage has dropped a bit. I can force this by adding load ( turn on all electronics, running lights, etc. ).
      Regardless, good luch and good work.

    • @stevenmurphree
      @stevenmurphree  Před 2 lety

      @@EricUdell that's a great idea trying some DC load next time to see if I can get alternator to do something different. When I dewinterize it here in a month or two I'll try.

    Those little isuzus are gems. You still got a few thousand hours to go. Your cruise speed at 7 knots is probably 1700-1900 rpm. I wonder what your gear reduction ratio is?

    • @stevenmurphree
      @stevenmurphree  Před 2 lety

      It's something weird like a 1.3 reduction and thr prop is 18x12.5 rh.

  • @injectortrouble

    Can you elaborate on what you mean by the bearing making a sound around a certain RPM? What bearing? Cheers from Brooklyn. On my channel I’m working on a Yanmar diesel which ran away on me.

    • @stevenmurphree
      @stevenmurphree  Před rokem

      On this boat there's a shaft bearing between the transmission and the cutlass bearing. That bearing had water up to it while the boat was stored on land and had a window leak. No amount of lube seems to help so I'll have to remove the shaft and replace the bearing eventually. Best of luck on your project!

  • @matui6983
    @matui6983 Před 2 lety +1

    Boat moves along quite nicely.
    Engine is probably spinning around at 2500-2800 to give you yr cruising speed.
    Numbers on injection pump tag will give you yr rpm figures. Getting tacho working shouldnt be too hard, tap into alternator and if tacho on dash is ok then should work fine.

    • @stevenmurphree
      @stevenmurphree  Před 2 lety

      Thanks! I'm not sure what you mean by alternator to tach? Does the tach pick up signal from the alternator or does it just need power?

    • @matui6983
      @matui6983 Před 2 lety

      Most marine electric tachometers get a pulse or signal from the alternator. Any auto or marine sparky should be able to do the job for you.
      Only other two ways are a cable driven tacho ($$$$$$)
      Or one that uses a magnetic pickup that srews into bellhousing and gets signal from the flywheel.

    • @matui6983
      @matui6983 Před 2 lety

      Get hold of a handheld digital tach that uses reflective tape on crankpulley/balancer to verify boats tach is right. Sum tachos are adj on the back by either a potentiometer or a series of small plastic contact switches you can adjust.
      Idle should be anywhere between 500-750rpm. C240's did have a bad harmonic at 2 x speeds 700rom and 1100rpm. But if yours is rubber mounted not solud mounted then shouldnt be an issue.
