XC HST overtaken by GWR HST Dawlish 18/06/16

  • Although not an unknown move, certainly quite rare in this case, XC 1V52 0600 Glasgow-Paignton was running 31 minutes late and the south coast line between Exeter and Newton Abbot had gotten very busy, so the signaller used the infrastructure appropriately utilising the bi-directional running on the up main to allow regulation for the on time GWR HST express 1C84 1306 Paddington-Penzance. I was just fortunate to be filming it all at the time.

    Many winters ago, our HST to Penzance used the up line hereabouts because the down line was being lashed by huge waves during a storm. The waves were washing right over the train.

    I used to drive the 43's out of Kings X up the ECML... With 4500 hp under the bonnet ( 2250 hp ) one up front and one up the botty there was plenty of power on tap... Pulling out of the station on notch five with the Paxman Valenta turbo's screaming their little heads off and clouds of exhaust smoke ( sorry Greta Thunberg ) was something to behold with more excitement to enjoy... 125 mph here we come although they would top 148 mph... Now there is food for thought but as I did not fancy tea and biscuits with the Boss well need I say more..

    I remember the disastrous washout Dawlish had some years bac from a horrific sea storm, and asked myslef: Why do they rebuild a railway lie so close to the sea? to me in is another disasrter waiting to happen! Now I see the rebuilt stretch of coastline (it looks vagiely familiar by way of what I remembered seeing of the disaster). Sure it is an important railaccess to what appears to be a lot of Western Englsand and likely Wales and Scotland also, but they could have rerouted all that via Exeter, away from the eternal menace of the sea, and had a spur to run south from there to serve Dawlish itself, couldn't they?

      Jules Hathaway it stopped at Dawlish Warren already plus there was another stopping train behind. It was because there were some late running trains and that too was late. Just a very busy period overall. An excellent use of the infrastructure.

    • @ChangesOneTim
      @ChangesOneTim Před 5 lety

      @@juleshathaway3894 Yes they are a good team at Exeter Panel. Using the Up line bi-di in this situation reduces overall delay more than holding the 'stopper' in Warren loop as both trains keep moving. On the flip-side though, it can be tricky to find long enough margins to do this move without delaying Up trains.

    We used to leave Sheffield about midnight and get in Newquay about 07:30, the sun would just be rising around this section around Dawlish. Do HST’s still go down to Newquay as I ain’t been since 97 and can you get one from Sheffield direct there such as say a Glasgow to Newquay that stops at Sheffield or have you to change somewhere?
