Vision and Neuroplasticity

Neuroplasticity is essentially the brain's ability to develop and to adapt to learn new things. Dr. Heather McBryar FCOVD from Amplify EyeCare Chattanooga discusses the ability of our vision to develop with time and adapt to learn new things. Vision is an extremely complex process that goes through an extensive development process. Much like learning to ride a bicycle, which may be easier at a younger age, but is still possible at any age, our neuroplasticity allows us to learn new visual skills at any age. And much like riding a bicycle, once we have learnt the process, it sticks, making those visual tasks effortless. The reason why vision therapy improves neuroplasticity is that we are able to reprogram the neurological software in order to either help the visual system develop properly in the first place, or get it back to functioning at its highest level.

Dr. Heather McBryar is a board certified optometrist, in addition to being a Fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD), a candidate for Fellowship in the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association (NORA), and a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry (ABO).
