Yeah, I started out with the BOSS DS-1 Distortion Pedal and an Arion SCH-Z Chorus Pedal, so yes, if you've just started playing electric guitar, having only a distortion pedal would be a good start.

hey im pretty new to guitar playing. ive gotten fairly comfortable with it but i do have one question. how do you make such a long note span or whatever you call it. like where the note just goes on and on and you dont have to restrum for a while.

I've only got Bass and Treble, and they're both set at 7.
The main thing in good tone (IMO) is a guitar in tune with itself (the intonation is adjusted correctly) and a balanced rig (guitar pedals + amp settings).

@drayg100 I'm pretty sure on the record they've got a violin; they also might have a cello on the record as well, but the cello can't hit the notes that high - it's a violin for sure on the record. It's the wrong timbre for a cello.
As far as live goes, they may or may not have a violin live.

I think you're referring to sustain.
You need good/guitar strings, a good guitar, good intonation, and/or some good guitar pedals for good sustain.
Sustain and decay are words you can Google.

you do a harmonic on the third fret of the third string with some gain and use the tremolo bar thing
